MSU COMPTON AFRICA PEACE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM for Dissertation Research byAfrican Students. Sponsored by the MSU African Studies Center and the Women and InternationalDevelopment Program. The African Studies Center (ASC) and the Women in International DevelopmentProgram (MSU-WID), in cooperation with the Center for Advanced Study of International Development(CASID), are offering Compton Peace Fellowships for dissertation research by students from Sub-SaharanAfrica up to $15, 000 which covers costs of travel, housing and meals to attend one month long MSUdirected readings program as well as to support field research in Africa. This program is an element of theMSU African Higher Education Renaissance Initiative (AHERI) and is made possible by a grant from theCompton Foundation through its Peace Fellowship Program for addressing peace, conflict resolution, andsecurity in Africa. Islamic Civilization Initiative - This program is designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding ofIslam and Islamic history and culture broadly defined. Approximately 30 grants will be awarded worldwideto competitive proposals for research and study in any country where there is an American student programand a significant Muslim population. Graduating seniors and candidates at all degree levels will beconsidered. Language study as a supplement to research is encouraged. Grantees will be expected to takepart in conferences and other outreach activities after returning home from the grant. Research areas may behistoric or contemporary. A Middle East focus is not sufficient to qualify for this program. The program ofstudy or research must have a strong Islamic Studies concentration. Asian Cultural Council Humanities Fellowships for Doctoral students - www.asianculturalcouncil.org/Individual Grants - Asian individuals in the visual and performing arts seeking grant assistance to conductresearch, study, receive specialized training, undertake observation tours, or pursue creative activity in theUnited States are eligible to apply for fellowship support from the Council. Deadline: February 1 forproposals to be considered at the spring meeting. Some requests in specific program areas may also beconsidered at a fall meeting, for which the application deadline is August 1.

Americans seeking aid to undertake activities in Asia are also eligible to apply to the ACC ResidencyProgram in Asia, the Asian Art and Religion Fellowship Program, the Humanities Fellowship Program, andthe Japan-United States Arts Program.

American Psychological Association sponsors an annual competition for dissertation researchfunding. The purpose of the Dissertation Research Award program is to assist science-oriented doctoralstudents of psychology with research costs. In 2004, the Science Directorate will grant two $5,000 awards,five $3,000 awards and twenty-five $1,000 awards to students whose dissertation research reflectsexcellence in scientific psychology.
