Breakdown of CV sections

1. Personal Details Name

Address

Phone Number

E-mail

Top Tips:

Consider whether your e-mail address is professional. [email protected] might be suitable for

your friends, but when applying for work experience and jobs you should set up a more

professional e-mail address such as [email protected]

Make sure that you check the e-mail address you provide for new messages regularly.

Make sure you include a current up to date mobile number which you are able to answer. It’s a

good idea to set up a voicemail message so potential employers can leave you a message if you are

unable to answer.

2. Education Dates of attendance, Name of Sixth Form/College

A level subjects

AS level subjects and grades (if relevant)

Dates of attendance, Name of School (if different)

GCSE subjects and grades

Top Tips:

Put your most recent educational achievements first.

You do not need to include modules that you have studied or any more detail than listed above.

You do not need to include Key Stage 2 or 3 grades.

You can include any other qualifications or language skills within the Interests and Achievements

section. This section is just for academic qualifications.

5. References Name

Address

• E-mail

Top Tips:

• The purpose of the reference is someone that employers can contact to check that the information

within your CV is accurate and who is willing to vouch for you. A teacher or employer is usually a

good choice, as they can confirm that you have a good attendance record and therefore should be

reliable.

• Make sure that you include the details of a referee who would say something nice about you, and

who would respond to a reference request. It is a good idea to ask someone whether they are

happy to be a referee for you before you include their details within your CV.

Final tips to help you draft your first CV Remember:

1. The CV you are drafting is to secure a work experience placement. Most people have not

yet undertaken any work experience, therefore it is important to use your CV to draw out

the skills that you have gained from other experience and explain why that will be relevant

and useful during a work experience placement.

2. Check the ‘Skills to integrate in to your CV’ page of this guide to get some ideas of skills you

can draw out of your experience.

For example:

Prefect

Collaborated well as part of a team of 10 Prefects to listen to and develop solutions for student

problems, such as the need to provide an indoor space for students to spend time during the winter

months during break times.

Sports Team

Elected captain of the hockey team for the past 2 years, self-motivated to attend training twice a

week after school and worked extremely well under pressure; subsequently led the team to

winning at least 3 out of 5 matches in both years.

3. Keep your CV concise and no longer than 1-2 pages

4. It is not necessary to include a picture or biography of yourself

5. Remember to spell check your CV!

Submit the first draft of your CV to [email protected] by no later than 8th January 2020.
