Is the STEM narrative too trendy?
7
How the role of counselors will change over the next decade
• More specialization– Traditional functions commoditized (transcripts, credit checks, registration, master
schedules, etc.)– Student micro-services (growing special education, growing diversity, growing
poverty, customized pathways (IEP for all?), targeted assessments)
• Integrators and Connectors – Instruction de-emphasized, whole-child emphasis (ubiquitous content, explosion of
modalities) – Portfolio managers
• Competency-based assessment coordinators (the coming wave of third-party assessment tools). WGU as the future K-12 model?
• Scheduled navigators, not passive service silo . . . . . .

Conclusion• The future demands of the economy aren’t so unknown;• STEM is important but trendy: critical thinking, problem solving, excellent
communication stand the test of time!• The role of counselor is changing and will change even faster:
– Commodity services automated (parent/student empowered)– Outsourced competency-based assessments– Integrators, connectors, and navigators– High demand by students and families for real-time standing
• Active high school and beyond plans• Degree audit software• Just-in-time reminders of critical steps and transitions
• To reach education and economic goals, targeted resources will focus on targeted populations – counselors will be the navigators, may need new contract terms.
