LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT POST-SECONDARY PROGRAM
BACHELOR’S DEGREES• aka – undergraduate degree• ex: BA, BSc, BSoc, BFA, etc.• obtainable through universities and some colleges• General Bachelor’s Degree: 3 years • Honours Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years with 70% average• Joint or Collaborative Degrees: Take courses partially at college and partially at university• Professional Degrees: Medicine, Law, Education• Advanced Degrees: Masters (graduate degree), PhD. (doctorate)

LOOKING FOR CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS
GENERAL TIPS• Look at the whole picture (location, residence, scholarships, extra-curricular activities, varsity sports, facilities, teaching staff, student life, etc.)
• Make note of any automatic alternative offers
• Prioritize your selections for application (no effect, but recorded for statistical analysis)
• Deadlines are REAL!
• Any out-of-province schools must be researched and applied to directly (and may have different requirements and/or deadlines)

APPRENTICESHIPS• Working with a trades person to train
• Attending a college for in-school portion of training
• Accumulating hours of work and levels of school training
• Taking the certification exam for journeyperson
OYAP• Stands for Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
• It’s a school-to-work transition program offered to full-time students in Grades 11 and 12
• Earn co-op credits through work placements in skilled trades AND accumulate hours towards your chosen trade at the same time
• See your co-op teacher for more details about registering with OYAP
DUAL-CREDIT PROGRAMS• Allow high school students to earn their high school co-op
credits as a student completing a semester of college courses or their Level 1 apprenticeship training
• Fully paid for – tuition, supplies, books, etc!
• Limited spaces, and must have transportation to and from Algonquin College or St. Lawrence College
• Application required; see your guidance counsellor to find out what programs are available in the upcoming semester
APPLICATIONS
APPLYING TO UNIVERSITY
• $140 for 3 programs, + $47 for each additional choice• Bring credit card information for instant payment
• Students will be given a PIN from OUAC to apply online• Application workshops will take place at the end of November/early December; students must make an appointment to apply during their study period (MSIP, if no study this semester)

UNIVERSITY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS• OSSD• Average calculated on 6 gr.12 4U or 4M courses
• cut off averages for each program may be viewed from last year in electronic info website
• Required courses for degree (some with minimum %)• Possible Additional Requirements:
• Portfolio, essay, or questionnaire• Personal statement of experience• Interview or audition• Language proficiency test

•“How to Apply” tutorial is on the OCAS website: http://www.ocas.ca/documents/applicant-tutorial-eng.pdf• Applicant needs SIN #, OEN # (from guidance), and can make their own username and password• $95 is the cost for 5 spaces on the application (max. 3 programs at one college)

• Over-subscribed programs are the only programs with competition to be admitted
COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY APPLICATION TIMELINES
OUAC OCASJanuary 14, 2015: Deadline to apply to university
February 3, 2013: Last day to submit changes to university application
May 28, 2015: Last day to receive offers of admission
June 1, 2015: Earliest a school can require a response or deposit
• Respond through “Review and Change your Completed Application”.
February 1, 2015: Deadline to apply to college for equal consideration
February 1, 2015: Earliest conditional offers begin
•Offers of admission will continue to be issued until programs are filled or wait-lists are established.
May 1, 2015: Final date to accept offers of admission
June 15, 2015: Earliest date that schools can require tuition payments
December 12, 2014: RHS deadline to apply in order to avoid delays in processing application!

• Can apply at any time directly through the employer
• Some colleges have 1-year certificate programs to give students a set of skills in a trade• These are good for students who cannot find a training work
site, and may be transferable towards the hours for full apprenticeship
