AN ADDITION TO THE PRAYER OF MURgILI TO THE SUNGODDESS

AND ITS IMPLICATIONS

It is now forty years since Oliver Gurney published his dissertation entilted "Hittite

Prayers of Mursili II"1. His careful analysis of the texts as well as his translation have

stood the test of time admirably. While writing, Gurney learned about the prayers to the

Sungodwhich had been found in the 1930s, but their publication came too late for inclusionin his work.2 Since then much has been written about these recent finds and their relation

to the texts of Mursili.3 On this happy occasion I want to offer to my friend a hitherto

unpublished fragment which forms part of the prayer to the Sungoddess of Arinna (KUB

24.3), completingthe beginningof columnii. It was H. Otten who recognizedit as belonging

to that tablet; he must have communicated this fact to E. Laroche, who included it as544/u under nr. 376, A, in the second edition (1971)of his Cataloguedes texteshittites(CTH).But Otten has not so far published the fragment, in contrast to additions to other solar

chosen a translation arbitrarily, since this is not the place for detailed discussion (e.g.,handant- vs. para handant- or the exact meanings of kurimma-and wannummiya-).

In Mursili'sprayer to the Sungoddess of Arinna the hymn begins with the following

lines, which have no parallel in the older sun hymns but recur in the prayer to Telipinu:10You, oh Sungoddess of Arinna, are an honoured deity.Your name is honoured among names,and your godhead is honoured among godheads.

Among the gods you alone, oh Sungoddess of Arinna, are honoured.

Great are you, oh Sungoddess of Arinna,and there is no other god more honoured or greater than you.

The Great Sun Hymn (CTH 372) begins with a simple address to the god; the parallel with

the prayer of Mursilibegins after that. The other versions become available only later.

The last lines of the new fragment of the prayer of Mursili (CTH 376,A) form the

transition to the specificprayerwhich follows immediately. This is the Plague Prayer edited

by Gurney, pp. 26-33. The scribes of Mursiliterminated the hymn at this point, while in

the two older versions (372 and 374) it continues. In the Great Sun Hymn (372) it runs

through the end of column i and the beginning of column ii (in KUB 31.127). From about

line 7 or 8 on (in FHG 1) this text has its own transition to a personal prayer.19 As was

pointed out elsewhere,20the compositions listed under CTH 374 differ from 372 in the

following ways:(a) The hymn ends with the section about Samas's viziers, correspondingto 372 i 65-67,21

leaving out the text of 372 ii 1-8.

(b) The transitional paragraphis different in 374.22

(c) In 374 there follows a single personal prayer which is parallel to the reverse of the

Kantuzzili text (CTH 373 KUB 30.10), whereas both the latter and 372 contain two

prayers, the second of which is introduced by another short address to the Sungod.23

This is not the place for dealing with those prayers; we only want to show that the

hymn, when combined with various prayers, could be terminated at different points; in

other words, that the way in which the Mursiliprayer cut off the hymn was not without

precedent.Returning now to the Mursiliprayer, we found that the following sections (or 'stanzas')

(7), the mention of Samas's mother Ningal and of his blue beard;

(8), which is an unnecessary new introduction;

(10), Samas, son of Ningal, as law-giver;

(12), Samas at the head of government;

(14), his rule over the four cornersbestowed on him by Enlil.

For sections 21-23, which cover 10 lines in 372 and 8 long lines in 374.1, Mursili'sprayerhad

only 5 lines accordingto Walther's estimate of the position of the loweredge of the tablet.

Obviously some of these sections must have been omitted, but we can only guess, which.

Section (22), which repeats the idea of (9), and (23), which elaborates on Samas's role as

judge, seem to be candidates for omission, whereas (21), which stresses the deity's care forthe unlucky persons, may well have been retained. By terminating the hymns with (25)

the prayer of Mursilifurthermoreexcludes the sections about the draft animals and theviziers of Samas, as well as some fragmentary and unclear parts of CTH 372.

I hope that this comparative presentation of the hymns will serve a double purpose:one, to enable Hittitologists to comparethe older and later versions at a glance for changesin spelling, morphology, syntax,24 and even choice of theme (as in section 3); and two, todemonstrate how the scribes of Mursiliwent about adapting a hymn to Samas to a prayeraddressed to the goddess of Arinna. One might say that in doing so they improved the

quality of the poem.
