Tales from Behind the Beard… (an interview with Santa!)

What a special treat to have Santa here over the Festival of Trees weekend. He granted me a short interview.

Sus: Santa, thanks for coming to Gualala this weekend. How do you accomplish so much and get around so quickly?

Santa: Ho Ho Ho….well…good question...people have been wondering that for years! A good friend once told me,…”Don’t sit there thinking about it....stop thinking and talking about it and just start doing the work one task at time.” If you stop to think about it too much, you may just talk yourself out of doing what seems impossible or too hard. I also have Mrs. Claus and LOTS of Elves all around this great planet that have the “can do, will do, already done” attitude . . . that makes all the difference!

Sus: I see you talking with the children and taking all their requests? What are some of the requests?

Santa: Well, every child’s request is special and very important. When children ask for pets, I let them know that its a lot of work to care for animals, I should know . . . my reindeer keep us running, especially this time of year with all the exercise they get. I mention to the child they have to clean litter boxes, walk the dogs, change water every day, feed them multiple times a day. Also they need to make sure and check in with their parents so they won’t get too upset with me if I bring them that cuddly critter they are asking for. I also mention to them maybe it is best to start with an easier pet like a gold fish or hamster.

On a few occasions I will get a real special request like “I want a baby sister or brother.” Oh man that is when I start sweating around the fur lining of my collar. I also have to mention about how much responsibility it is to help raise a sibling. Talking about tough ones, I even had one little boy ask for a new daddy since his dad had to go to heaven this year. Whew . . . .

Sus: Wow...that is a tough one! You work so hard, how do you manage to stay so positive and up beat?

Santa: Ho Ho Ho! You are really trying to squeeze a lot in. Sure it is a busy season and we all have lots of challenges, but I believe happiness comes from within not from external circumstances. We all have something to share, and I find my happiest time is when I am giving. So, that is what I like to spend my time doing…giving the spirit of Santa Claus to everyone I encounter.

Sus: Thanks Santa! You really are an inspiration…may we all channel your positive giving spirit this holiday season! Ho Ho Ho!!!

The annual Gualala Salon & Salon des Refusés is a juried and judged fine art exhibit showcasing outstanding visual art and artists without regard to the type of media.

The annual Salon & Salon des Refusés is the largest exhibit at Gualala Arts aside from Art in the Redwoods; it has the greatest number of entries of any other open call show and fills both the Burnett Gallery and Elaine Jacob Foyer. Many artists save their best new art for this exhibit.

This year’s judge, Evan Hobart, was introduced to clay as a young child in 1993, when he participated in a ceramics after-school art program in the San Geronimo Valley in West Marin. He received his BA from Humboldt State University in 2004 and completed his Graduate Degree from San Jose State University in 2011 working with Stan Welsh and Monica Van den Dool.

As per tradition, the judges decide what artwork is accepted into the Salon exhibited in the Burnett Gallery. The art not juried into the Salon by the judges is displayed in the Salon des Refusés (Rejected) located in the Elaine Jacob Foyer. Thus, all artwork submitted into the show will be exhibited at Gualala Arts.

This year’s monetary awards are first prize of $1,000, second prize of $750, and third prize of $500. The People’s Choice awards in the Salon des Refusés are first prize of $100, second $175 and third $50. The award for Emerging Artist Under 18 years of age is $100.

In the spirit of the original Paris Salon des Refusés, all visitors will be able to vote for the “People’s Choice” awards. In fact, many artists prefer to be selected as a “reject” to receive the public’s opinion!

A Holiday Event from Local Eyes

Saturday, December 8, 3 pmColeman Hall

$15 in advance, plus $5 day of

The Ernest Bloch Bell Ringers will present their annual Holiday Concert for the Coast concert on Saturday, December 8 at 3 pm in the Coleman Auditorium of the Gualala Arts Center.

This concert is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. A favorite perennial is “Carol of the Bells” and a hauntingly beautiful ar-rangement of “A Midnight Clear” will be performed. Talented local musicians will join the bell ringers. Dan Laux will play the hammered dulcimer on “What Child is This?” Cyndy Solomon and Mary Visher will play a recorder duet on “Rejoicing at the Manger,” and Karl Young joins the bell ringers with his shakuha-chi on “Still, Still, Still.”

Singing is always a part of our bell ringers’ concerts. You won’t want to miss hearing Remi Alexander singing “Mary, Did You

Know?” and Sita Milchev joined by Cassy Grossman per-forming Cohen’s “Hal-lelujah.” The intricate Ave Maria trio for bells will be presented this year, performed by Catherine Miller, Hal Ferguson and Jeanne

Jackson. Sita Milchev will sing the glorious “Ave Maria” with the trio. The audience will be invited to join the bells in singing “Win-ter Wonderland” led by Cinnamon Rippey and Linda Bostwick, “Angels We Have Heard on High,” and the traditional closing piece, “Silent Night.”

Another highlight to brighten spirits will be the first-time appear-ance of the Gualala Dance Studio dancers. Dancers from age 4 to 12 will be dancing to a medley of tunes from the “Nutcracker Suite.” The dancers will also join the bells on “Twelve Days of Christmas” with Remi Alexander leading the fun sing-along, and “Jingle Bells.”

Santa will be at GAC at 2:30 pm to greet concertgoers, handing out candy canes to youngsters of all ages. Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 the day of the concert. For further informa-tion, contact Bell Director Jeanne Jackson at 707) 884-1761.

A Holiday Concert for the Coast featuring the Ernest Bloch Bell Ringers

7

This will be the second annual AaAR Holiday Salon hosted by hard-working duo Albatross —Jennifer Beattie, mezzo-soprano and Adam Marks, piano—alongside AaAR alumni Zach Pulse (oboe) and

Jennifer Woodrum (clarinet), and it promises to be a rollicking good time. In their signature style, they’ll blend timeless classics with lesser-known treasures. They’ll also be joined by the beloved members of the local community for a variety of pieces and songs. This performance will include George Crumb’s A Little Suite for Christmas, A.D. 1979, featuring Adam Marks on this intricate work for the piano (including on the strings). Attendees will also hear Jhula Juhle by Reena Esmail showcasing oboe and piano in traditional Hindustani melodies. Throw in some Brahms, some familiar Noels, and

join them for their signature Holiday Kazoo-Along. Proceeds from this concert will support Artists at Albatross Reach (artistsatalbatrossreach.com), the collaborative arts residency series.

Albatross is a voice/piano duo exploring and expanding art song as a corner of the chamber music world and beyond. As soloists in their own right, Adam has been

called “an excellent pianist” with “titanic force” by The New York Times, and Jennifer’s performance of Mahler’s das Lied von der Erde with Argento Chamber Ensemble was called one of the top 10 performances in New York City (NY Classical Review) in 2015. Together, they concertize (the San Francisco Examiner called them a “smashing success”) and co-direct Artists at Albatross Reach, an artists’ colony that fosters collaborations, experiments, and boundary-breaking new works alongside active community engagement, in Gualala, CA.

Under the direction of Sue Bohlin, the Coastal Singers will welcome the winter Solstice and prepare for the season with a program called Solstice Christmas on Friday, December 21, 7

pm at the Gualala Arts Center.

Twenty-five coastal devotees of music and poetry will present a palate of seasonal melodies – with passports from Palestrina, Italy (Sicut Cervus); from the pagan heritage of

Estonia comes the spell casting music of Urmas Sisask (Heliseb Väljadel) who bases most of his compositions on astronomy. From the Republic of Georgia (Racha region) comes an ancient call to Christmas; and from Chile – what has become the national song in times of triumph and grief-Gracias a la Vida. From 1982 England comes a song by Howard Blake, who says that Walking in the Air is about opportunities and childhood innocence, and was selected by NASA to be the soundtrack for time-lapse sequences by the Expedition 30 crew aboard the International Space Station.

Then, with a new take on Tradition, the Coastal Singers will give you a taste of Chanukah (in Santa Monica) by Jewish American political satirist, Tom Lehrer, who turned 90 this year, a White Christmas (though we’ll settle for lots of rain!) by the Russian-born American-Populist-Musical genius, Irving Berlin, and sung poetry by English poet, Sally Hawkins, on the theme of astronomy complimenting the evening sky.

As a special guest, the internationally recognized Bay Area choral conductor, Robert Geary, will conduct Magnificat Anima Mea, (1st movement from the larger work, Magnificat, by John Rutter) with Sue Bohlin on piano.

With instrumental artists Mary Mackie and Don Kreiger on piano; Eric Kritz, clarinet; Marsha Lotter, violin; and the Appalachian Duo of Pam Powell & Richard Custer, a Solstice Christmas will measure up to anyone’s high standards.

Other songs in this musical program will include novelty holiday songs from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. To round off the musical program Sita has chosen some amazing non-holiday songs from film and stage musicals.

FEATURED EVENT | GUALALA ARTS CENTER

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will again be presented at the Gualala Arts Center Coleman Auditorium on Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24 from 5 pm to 6 pm. Admission is free.

During this annual community event, the audience will join in singing the nine carols, all old favorites familiar to many. Interspersed with the carols, clergy and readers representing most of the coast faith communities share Bible passages that tell the Christmas story. Don Krieger provides musical accompaniment.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols follows the format offered since 1918 at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England. The Festival was introduced to bring a more imaginative approach to worship, and is accessible and inviting to people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols continues to be offered at King’s College Chapel and has been broadcast by the BBC since the 1930’s. The service was first held on the Mendonoma

Coast in 1992, and is now in its 26th year, with programs held at Gualala Arts since 1998.

Seating is limited and quickly fills up, so plan to arrive early.

Donations are welcomed, and those received will go to support the South Coast Crisis Aid (also known as South Coast Crisis Line). These donations are the primary source of funding for SCCA, supporting emergency food, fuel, bus transportation and lodging assistance throughout the year via vouchers distributed by local clergy and Action Network in Gualala and Point Arena.
