Averdict passed by the Supreme Courtagainst the 1993 Mumbai blasts accusedYakub Memon, passed the death sentence

for the terrorist. The judgement, however, createdwaves of disagreement among certain sections ofthe Indian society. Some believe that Memon ispaying for his brother’s sin, while a few are of theopinion that the death sentence shows the inefficacyof the Indian government to nab the ‘real culprits’including his brother Tiger Memon, regarded thereal mastermind. The aftermath ofYakub’s capital punishment has leftthe nation baffled with many ques-tions - Is capital punishment justi-fied? Was this a hurried judgment? Why has terrorism become a polit-ical issue? We dig deep.

Is capital punishment justified?YES: Punishment has always served as

an effective tool to discourage crime, hence, the role of capital punishment incurbing crime cannot be denied. A pun-ishment as strong as death penalty will al-ways make the criminals think twicebefore they commit a crime for the fearof losing their own life. In a largersense, capital punishment will bethe ultimate warning against allcrimes, making the judicialsystem appear more dra-conian to criminals.

Taranjit Singh,AIS Saket, XI

NO: Capitalpunishment, insteadof curbing crime, may result in a slewof criminalactivities. Forinstance, even for acrime like rape, manyadvocate capitalpunishment, not realisingthat the fear of death maymotivate the criminal to killthe victim after the crime.Besides, in a country likeIndia, where every action isviewed under the lens ofcommunities, capital punishment may notgo down very well with the cultural ethos ofthe society. Instead, a stricter system ofpunishment may serve as a feasible solution.

Akhilesh Buddhiraja, AIS Saket, XI

Is terrorism a political issue?YES: Terrorism is indeed apolitical issue. The two are sofinely interlinked that some-

times, it is difficult to demarcatethe operations of the two groups.Quite often, several violent agents re-sort to terrorist activities simply tomake a point to their government orto showcase their aggression over acertain issue. Terrorist activitiesare often an attempt to pres-surise the government to alterthe system in line with theirideology. Keeping in viewthis background, politicsemerges, as a dimensionof terrorism itself, which is sad.

Anusheela Ghosh,AIS Saket, XII

NO: Terrorism is not apolitical issue andshould not becomeone. Politics is unneces-

sarily dragged into suchcases when sometimes, reli-gion of the person is brought

into question. Or in some cases, thepolitical party is maligned by the accused

creating a dramatic blanket over the situation, where different politicians are made to emerge asopportunists, while the real problem at hand tendsto take a backseat.

Prithviraj Khanna, AIS Saket, XI

Some politician remarked - “Why this unseemlyhurry in Yakub’s execution?” Was it so? YES: Terrorism often creates vitriolic ripple effectsthat are long standing and divide variouscommunities on social, religious and economiclines. It is well proven that rich people never reachthe gallows while poor people are left to fend forthemselves. What is astonishing is the fact that forthe first time, Supreme Court was opened in themiddle of the night to reject the mercy plea andbefore we knew it, Yakub was hanged. Yes, he wasresponsible for many deaths, but is ‘an eye for aneye’ the only answer?

Simran Arora, AIS Pushp Vihar, XINO: Dear Mr Minister, 22 years is certainly no‘hurry’. If anything, this decision is rather delayed. The victims of the 1993 Mumbai blast and theirfamilies have waited long for this verdict. This wasa much needed step.

While some like to watch movies inthe comfort of their own home,

for others ‘movie hall me nahi dekha tohkya dekha’ is the slogan. So, which sidewins? Read on to decide!

Stay at homeNo irritants:How many times have youbeen seated next to the loudly talkinglady who just wouldn’t let you watch themovie in peace? At home, it’s you andjust you. Eternal peace. It’s your movie: Want to take a snackybreak? Somebody calling? Pause themovie, and resume when you wish to. The couch: Those hard, uncomfortableseats can never be a match to lying down

on the couch, snuggled under a blanket.

Theatre it isThe munchies: Popcorn in everyflavour imaginable, nachos, hot dogs,burgers... there’s a lot to appease yourtaste buds as you enjoy the movie. Screen: Even the best LEDs can’t com-pete with the 70 mm screen. So, if ‘kingsize’ is what you want, then you reallyneed to get off the couch.

Out ‘n’ aboutMovies are not just movies. They are apivotal part of our weekend outings.Whether with our best friends or fam-ily, on a regular weekend or a festival,‘movie ka plan banaya kya’ is the lineeveryone loves to hear!G T

From soulful tunes like ‘Jab Dilhi Toot Gaya’ by KL Saigal inthe 30s to the pop-nasal remix-

esque music version of the samesong in the 2000s, Bollywood musichas indeed come a long way. Thetransition though, hasn’t been anovernight process.

The journeyWhile the 50s were all about mean-ingful lyrics like ‘Pyaar hua, ikraarhua’, the 60s and 70s saw a wave ofwesternisation. Then came in BappiLahiri in the 70s, who added a touchof ‘Disco’ to Hindi music. The arrival of the 90s infused In-dipop into Bollywood, with chart-busters like ‘Ek do teen’ and ‘Churake dil mera’ going on to become eter-

nal hits. With pop artists like BabaSehgal, Lucky Ali and Alisha Chinailending their unique melody into themusic scene, the western influencewas palpable in Bollywood too.As the film industry entered the newmillennium, though western beatsand club music continued to domi-nate, classical and semi-classicalsongs found their niche as well. While Sonu Nigam croons andShreya Ghoshal spills sugar with hervoice, the mischievous songs of Yo YoHoney Singh have also found a spot.

Back to the rootsDespite treading a long path, Hindifilm music is best known for itsroots. Even today, classics continueto rock the music scene. KishoreKumar and Mohammad Rafi arenames that still strike a beautiful

tune in every ear. Surveys suggestthat Indians who have a taste forEnglish songs, are also keen for thesegolden hits. Now that’s what we callvintage!Meaningful lyrics, soulful tunes thatconnect and stir emotions, are per-haps the things that make the 80’smusic one of the best genres of musicBut just in case, you have missed outon the magic of the times gone by, webring you an evergreen playlistbelow.

“A good newspaper, I suppose, is a nationtalking to itself.”

Arthur Miller

Eight years back when I hadconceptualised The GlobalTimes, I had envisioned a plat-form that would bring allAmi-tians together and provide asounding board for their opin-ions, besides being a skill de-velopment arena to polishtheir writing skills. After eight

successful years of running, I’m not only as-tounded but also proud that Amity’s youthnewspaper has become so much more.GT has become the symbol of a true Amitian, ithas become the identity of our alumni. My heartbeams with pride when I see columns like‘ground reporting’ in the pages of the newspa-per, where children not only voice their opinionsabout pressing issues of the society, but also ac-tively research on them, while seeking plausiblesolutions. As Mark Twain has rightly said, “Anewspaper is not just for reporting the news as itis, but to make people mad enough to do some-thing about it.” When the seeds of consciousawareness are planted at such a young age, theyare sure to manifest into profound thinking in-dividuals, who do not shy away from taking theresponsibility of bringing about positive changesin the society.Every year, the GTAwards function not only ap-plauds Amity’s promising journalists, it also ac-costs them to experts from the industry who addmuch value to the event, and to the students’ lives.I envision a day whenmyAmitians will reach dif-ferent corners of the world in great capacities, andyet be connected through the pages of theirfavourite newspaper. That is when, The GlobalTimes will become truly ‘global’. G T

This special edition of TheGlobal Times is dedicated toall the students who played anactive role as reporters, pho-tographers and designers inmaking this youth newspaper,Amity’s pride. The annual GTAwards 2014-15 was not justa felicitation of those students

but also an ode to one and all (including alum-nus who turned up on the day) who have madeGT a niche youth newspaper over the years. From the students who received an award for thefirst time to the ones who have been continu-ously winning, the excitement was the same. The grandeur of the ceremony (compared to theOscars by chief guest Anjana Om Kashyap, Ed-itor, Aaj Tak) spelled the involvement of thebudding journalists to give vent to their talent. The three-hour-long ceremony beautifullysummed up the yearlong efforts of the children, where they came up with their own customizednewspaper. The ceremony recognized the effortsof all participating schools. So if they did notmake it in the winner, first or second runner upcategory, each of them had a nomination certifi-cate to take away (look out for centre spread). This unique initiative of our revered Chairper-son Ma’am, Dr (Mrs)Amita Chauhan, is a novelstage for multiple talents to take their first diveinto the world of journalism. While the desire to have an attractive externalimage is common, it is the obsession withlight skin tones that is disturbing. This is

more so with the Indian masses. In a society that looksdown its Patrician nose on anything except milk andalmond hues, being born dark skinned is consideredthe most unfortunate. In 2010, India's whitening-cream market was worth$432m. In the year 2012 alone, Indians reportedly con-sumed 233 tonnes of skin-whitening products. It does-n’t really come as a surprise then, that the matrimonialadvertisements are constantly asking for ‘fair brides’.But the bias cuts across both genders, suggests a 2012survey by Jeevansathi.com, as it claims 71% womenprefer fair men for marriage. Talk about equality! To add to the misery are the numerous advertisementsof various skin-whitening products. You aren't getting

a job? No problem, use a product, lighten your skin tone and *boom*you'll be flooded with calls the nextday for job interviews. Guys tease you?Or you don't get marriage proposals? Solution?Fairness cream! It’s funny how people follow thesecommercials blindly, without putting an iota of com-mon sense into it. The portrayal of fairer people beingmore attractive is illogical anyway. Look at successfulpersonalities like Bipasha Basu, Sushmita Sen andMiss America Nina Davuluri, who despite being darkskinned have managed to carve a niche for themselvesin their respective fields. We need to accept and understand that there is a reasonthat God made us a certain way. It's time we change ourmindset and start accepting people without bearing inmind what colour skin they have. By the way, our skintone in no way guarantees us a safe and secure job. With the hope of making sev-eral new friends and having agreat time, Sanjay entered his

new school. Instead of the warm smilesthat he was expecting, he was greetedwith a chalk straight on his forehead. The chalk was thrown by the blacksheep of the class - Ashish. Two days later, the class teacher in-formed the students that they would begoing to Gulmarg on an adventuretrekking trip. Everyone was required tobring a written permission from theirparents. That evening, Sanjay received

his father’s permission along with abook called ‘Snow Mountains’. The noteread - “Do read this Sanjay, to know allabout the snow.” Sanjay thanked his fa-ther and was excited about the trip.Next week, the bus left for Gulmarg.Everyone was enjoying themselveswhile Sanjay was busy reading his book.Ashish, being the bully that he was, mocked Sanjay for this too. The nextday, everyone went for skiing. Theywere given strict instructions not to gonear the steep slopes. Ashish was skiingvery fast and soon, went ahead of every-body down the hill. Sanjay, who was ski-ing slowly, noticed Ashish slide ahead.

Suddenly, he heard a strange sound andlooked in that direction. He saw a snowavalanche on a far away hill. “Oh wow,an avalanche! But what is that?” Sanjaysaw a black figure down the snow ava-lanche. “Oh no, it’s Ashish!” he ex-claimed! He saw Ashish being coveredby the avalanche completely. Sanjayrushed to save Ashish but could onlyfind his skis. ‘A victim of an avalanchecan only survive for thirty minutes andthe body could be anywhere near hisskis’, he recalled an excerpt from theguide book. Sanjay started searchingfrantically and finally found Ashish. Hequickly removed the snow coveringAshish and heaved a sign of relief whenhe found him breathing. He used the redscarf on his neck as a flag. One of thestudents saw the flag and rushed Ashishto a doctor. Ashish was ashamed of hisbehaviour towards Sanjay and extendeda hand of friendship towards him. Noone bullied Sanjay now.G T

In the sky of lanterns reside stories, they house infinite blessings, but also vicious mysteries.

Two sides of the same mirror, from the blood of one are born angels,

from the other are born devils.

True they are hypnotising tunnels, obscuring all, fainting the nightfall, maleficent tubes gulp down the stars.

But hiding the secret of all time, nothing has ever got out of its grasp, in there, life carries on in a time lapse.

Invisible, dark and black,so dense and so stark, from there, no one can ever get back.

Beaded out of dead stars, capable of spawning new galaxies, you will be swirled in like spaghetti.

An enigmatic territory,it has remained for one and all,and so, none has been there for a stroll.

Not one could ever travelthrough a black hole!

Clear and plain,we arrive amidst this chaos, unaware of the stains, and all the ethos. Like chalks on board,we’re nothing but a story, vulnerable to be rubbed off, of the valour and the glory.Shining shadows and watermarks,we find we're halfway through. Unaware of what's ahead, doubting the authenticity of all weever knew.Like chalks on board, we’re nothing but a story.Being retold every now and then, constantly rewritten in the history of men. It’s only in the end that we conceive,

and acknowledge all we’ve achieved. The anecdotes of the things we've won, the narratives of all we’ve done. These are the ones that still showand that’s how we know oflife in a flow.

His presence meant a guiding hand, his wallet was a treasure of brands.Whenever he scolded me for my flaw,I teased him often by saying ‘aww’.I committed all those tiny crimes, but I was saved by him all the time.We fought, we cried and laughed so hardat those silly secrets that we always kept in guard.Together, we were like superheroesalways on our toes.

Yet never there will be lack of reason to love him less.So here goes something that I want to confess. No matter how far or near you stay, whether it’s night or a bright sunny day, I promise to make you stand tall, because you’re my brother as I would fondly recall.G T

Heyelled at her, “Don’t you know thatwhen you give someone a gift, there hasto be something inside it!” Scared of herfather’s anger, Megha remained quiet fora few minutes and then she looked up athim with tears in her eyes and said,“Dad, it is not empty, I blew kisses intothe box, all for you, daddy.” Her fatherwent quiet and felt sorry. My greatest service to my motherland, will be to make it the best in the world, but people think I can’t do it,just because I am a girl.

I want to make my country proud, maybe by joining the army,I will try to be an officer, but I know it will be a tough journey.

Being an Indian I feel very proud and no shame,to serve India till I die, is my aim.People think that only boys can do this great deed. But there are only a few people who disagree with this.

I will prove everybody wrong, and make my country proud.People will know India as the best country in the world.

For that I will have a medal around my proud neck, not a necklace made of pearl.Even dreaming to do this for my beloved country, makes me feel so happy and free.

Doing that in real life will feel absolutely more brave and wonderful,Oh! How I long for theday so beautiful! When I step towards doing this, everyone will be proud and honoured to be known as a Hindustani. G T
