Chamber of Commerce is ac-cepting nominations for the 2013 Citizen of the Year Award and 2013 Business Leader of theYear Award.

The Citizen of the Year Award is presented to an adult resident of the greater Rochester area who has made substantial contributions to the community as a whole. Activities should be over and above the normal duties of one’s paid position and need not be confined to a single year. Activities do need to be recent enough to have current signifi-cance. Lifetime achievement may be considered as a separate award.

The Business Leader of the Year Award is presented to a chamber member business person of an active company, profession-al firm or non-profit organization who demonstrates leadership in the business community and ex-cellence in their business or pro-fession. Nominees for this award must be members of the chamber in good standing and contribu-tions to the community beyond business interests and chamber activities are considered.

Both of these awards will be announced and presented at the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner Dance and Awards Banquet being held on Saturday, April 6. Recipients are provided with an award at this event and are then announced in the chamber news-letter and Eblasts. Recipients are also recognized on the chamber website throughout the year and appear in the Rochester Holiday Parade, produced annually by the chamber.

Nomination forms are avail-able at the chamber office or on the chamber website at www.roches-ternh.org. Nominations should include the name and address of the individual being nominated, distinguished activities for which the individual is being nominated including supporting documenta-tion along with contact informa-tion of the individual or organiza-tion submitting the nomination. The deadline for nominations to be submitted is Feb. 8 and forms are to be sent to the Awards Com-mittee, Greater Rochester Cham-ber of Commerce, 18 S. Main St., Rochester, NH 03867.

DOVER – On Sunday, Feb. 10, the

Children’s Museum of New Hampshire will come alive with the rhythms of drumbeats and melodies of songs. Performer and educator Michael Wingfield will present two interactive perfor-mances for children and families at 1 and 2:30 p.m., included with paid admission to the museum and free for museum members.

Wingfield has 25 years of experience in the African-Carib-bean percussion arts and culture. Through the rhythm and song of the African New World, he works in a variety of settings, preschool to college, health care facilities, libraries, festivals and music halls alike. His residencies augment music, social studies, literature programs, and team-building cur-ricula.

His performance credits list tours with Flora Purim & Airto, Sun Ra, and Herman Johnson. Cameo appearances include the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Richie Havens, Elvis Costello, and Reynaldo Gonzalez.

pated in that conflict. A plaque so designating was mounted on the Portsmouth end of the struc-ture.

That construction of the bridge, which began in 1920, was a joint venture of the states of New Hampshire and Maine and the federal government.

When completed there will be three bridges spanning the Piscataqua River. These include the Memorial Bridge, the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge on the Route 1 bypass, and the Piscataqua River High Level Bridge that carries Interstate 95.

The Sarah Long Bridge is in need of repair and work on it is expected to begin once the Memorial Bridge is carry-ing traffic again. Just as New Hampshire is taking the lead on the Memorial Bridge project, Maine will be leading the way on the Long project.

Boynton said the putting into place of the southern end of the bridge was “another mile-stone” in the project that is on schedule “as far as I know.”

He said the pieces of the span are made in Claremont, N.H., and trucked to the state pier in Portsmouth where they are assembled on a barge and then floated down the river into place.

While the replacement is being paid for by Maine and

New Hampshire there are fed-eral funds involved as well.

The 88-year-old bridge was closed to vehicle traffic in July 2011. In January 2012 the New Hampshire Department of Transportation closed it to walkers and bikers with demoli-tion beginning soon thereafter.

The bridge was originally opened in 1923 and was desig-nated as a World War I memo-rial to the soldiers and sailors of New Hampshire who partici-

A Massachusetts native and an 18-year resident of Portland, Maine, Wingfield’s interest in harnessing talent to build com-munity speaks in his marshalling the procession during the historic Amistad visit to Portland’s water-front, and of his production work with the Portland NAACP Dr. Martin Luther King Gospel and Music Concert.

“Michael is a long-time friend of the museum and we are so happy to have him back to

share his talent and knowledge of African instruments and culture,” said Jane Bard, director of educa-tion at the museum. “Kids who come to these performances will be able to touch and try out some of the drums and are guaranteed to have a rousing good time.”

The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire is located at 6 Washington St. in Dover. For more information, call 603-742-2002 or visit www.childrens-mu-seum.org.

Dear Computer Lady,A friend suggested I install

Infranview to edit pictures. When I Google Infran-

view all that comes up is IR-FANVIEW.

This friend sent me a link to her picture editing program and it definitely show Infran-view but this page shows a list of sponsors for editing pictures.

Whether I try to down-load Infranview or Irfanview, my AVG virus program comes up and advises against the downloads, one stating that it is a relatively new program, and the other attempt simply would not let me do the down-load.

This friend has highly rec-ommended her picture editing program and I would love to have it . Thanks for your help. Diz (Maine)

Dear Diz,I have not heard of Infran-

view, but I have used Irfanview for more than 10 years and I think it is a great program.

I did an online search for the program you are looking for, but all I found was vari-ous websites that look like they were set up to take advantage of people who were searching for Irfanview, but spelled it wrong.

The program, Irfanview is a great little program for view-ing images and doing some basic editing. When you view a folder full of photos using Ir-fanview, you just open the first image, and can quickly go from one image to the next using the space bar on your keyboard. I also like to use it to crop, resize

and convert my images, but it is not as good at adding text or combining images.

You can find Irfanview at: http://www.irfanview.com Here is a direct link to down-load it: http://www.irfanview.info/files/iview435_setup.exe My AVG is happy with that download.

When I want to use more powerful image editing fea-tures, I use a free, open source program called, Gimp which is available at: http://www.gimp.org/

Gimp is a very powerful image editing program simi-lar to expensive programs like Photoshop. If you are not fa-miliar with image editing pro-grams, the Gimp website has some tutorials, and you can usually find a tutorial for what you want to do with a simple Google search.Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,My acer computer started

acting very oddly, the screen went dark, and various places on the screen said my computer was counterfeit, together with many threats that if I didn’t fix it all kinds of terrible things would happen. Is this a scam or real? Julia

Dear Julia,It sounds like you have

been infected with some mal-ware.

There are lots of malware infections that try to convince you that something is wrong with your computer, and you need to pay their “company” in order to fix the problem.

I have seen malware that tells you that you are infect-ed, or that you have an illegal copy of Windows, and there is even an “FBI warning” going around recently.

None of these are legiti-mate, and if you do attempt to pay them, you have just given your credit card information to crooks.

Once you have been in-fected with these malware pro-grams, it can be a bit tricky to get rid of them. I sometimes have success with Malware-bytes and AVG Internet Se-curity, but these malicious programs can sometimes do so much damage to your com-puter that the only solution is to backup your files and do a clean install of Windows.

Ninety percent of the time when a customer brings me a computer infected with this type of malware, I can get it out without having to do a clean install.Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady,Could you please instruct

me as to how to delete sent mes-sages? I have so many.

I would like to keep some for a record, could I do that?

Thanks so much, Darlene

Dear Darlene,Since you didn’t mention

what e-mail program you were using, I almost deleted your e-mail without answering it.

I noticed, however, that your e-mail address was with Gmail, so I am going to take a guess that you are using Gmail’s online interface for your email.

To delete your sent mes-sages in Gmail, click on “Sent

Mail” in the left column. This will display the contents of your sent message folder.

If you want to get rid of them all, you can click on the small check box just above the list of messages. This selects all the messages on the current page.

Dear Computer Lady,How do I go about re-

formatting a Seagate external hard drive to use on my new laptop?

I was using it with my XP desktop. Thanks, Shirley

Dear Shirley,It is actually pretty easy to

format an external hard drive, but I do have to stress that when you do this, everything on the drive will be erased.

As long as you have the files on the external hard drive stored someplace else and you are ready to format it (and erase

it in the process) let’s get start-ed.

First, plug the drive into your new laptop. I am guessing that it is a USB connection, so you would plug the USB cable from the hard drive into your laptop.

Now open your “My Com-puter” window. You should see your external hard drive listed with your other drives.

Note: Make sure you are working on the external hard drive, and NOT your local drives. If you are in doubt, unplug the external hard drive and make a note of which drive is gone from the “My Comput-er” window.

Right click on the ex-ternal hard drive, and click on “Format...” in the context menu that appears.

A formatting dialog box will open. Just click the “Start” button near the bottom. A warning dialog box will appear, asking you if you are sure you want to erase everything on the disk. If you are sure, click the “OK” button and your disk format will start.

Keep in mind, that a large disk might take a few hours before the format is finished.Elizabeth

The Right Time For Braces Orthodontic braces are

used to help position and align an individual’s teeth. Get-ting braces is something that is typically seen as a rite of childhood. But many parents are unsure as to when their children should be fitted for braces.

Although many children benefit the most from getting braces between the ages of 10 and 15, the American Associa-tion of Orthodontists as well as international orthodontic authorities advise that chil-dren should get their first orth-odontic screening by the age of seven, when there may be a mixture of permanent and juvenile teeth in the child’s mouth. The orthodontist may be able to forecast any future problems that may arise and note if there are any prelimi-nary steps that can be taken.

Even though many chil-dren wait until adolescence to get braces, and most doctors will want to monitor kids’ oral structure as they grow, famil-iarity with a child’s mouth enables an orthodontist to act

when the time is right. Some or-thodontists work to remedy an overbite or underbite, and they also may address spacing issues.

How braces workBraces straighten teeth by

putting steady pressure on the teeth to help shift the teeth into correct position. The orthodon-tist will determine how long to keep the braces on.

As the teeth shift, the wires that are part of the braces will be cut and adjusted accordingly. Teeth that require extra help may necessitate the use of specialized headgear to impart extra pres-sure on the mouth.

Today’s braces are much less noticeable than those of yes-teryear. Some braces are smaller in profile, and there are clear va-rieties and those that are placed behind the teeth. The wires used in braces also have changed. They are smaller and more tech-nologically advanced to help straighten teeth faster and easier.

Living with bracesBraces will require some al-

terations to a child’s diet as well as his or her oral hygiene routine.

Sticky foods or ones with small particles that tend to lodge be-tween the teeth should be avoid-ed as much as possible. Chew-ing gum can be exceptionally troublesome. Sticky candies may get stuck, and you could pull off brackets trying to unlodge the candy.

Keeping teeth clean also will require a few extra steps. Because of the small parts and crevices braces create in the mouth, food can lodge in areas more easily. If left that way, one could end up with tooth decay. It is adviseable to use specially de-signed floss brushes and picks to clean the teeth and dislodge any trapped particles. Also, continue with routine dental cleanings as scheduled.

After bracesAt the time braces are re-

moved, most patients are fitted for a retainer that will be worn at certain periods of the day (usu-ally at night) to help keep teeth aligned properly. It is important to continue to use the retainer as advised by the orthodontist to help prevent teeth from shifting or becoming crooked once more.

Braces are a necessity for thousands of people. They’re generally applied during the pre-teen years, but younger children as well as adults have used braces successfully.

business & finance

A struggling economy can have both instant and long-

term consequences. When the economy is suffering, con-sumers tend to spend less in the short term while making financial decisions that affect them over the long haul.

One of the biggest quan-daries men and women face during a recession or eco-nomic downturn is how to approach their retirement ac-counts, most notably a 401(k). When the economy begins to struggle, men and women may notice their 401(k) plans are struggling right along with it, losing money that most were counting for their retirements. This can induce a certain degree of panic, as account holders worry about their financial futures and how they are going to get by

should the recession last and their retirement accounts con-tinue to shrink.

But such panic might be unwarranted. According to the investment management firm Vanguard, participant saving and investing behavior had re-turned to prerecession levels by 2010, and participant account balances actually rose 13 per-cent between 2005-2010, despite the considerable market shock that occurred during the reces-sion of 2008-2009. Those fig-ures illustrate that even during a particularly bad economic swoon investors will return to their typical behavior sooner rather than later. Therefore it pays to avoid overreacting at the onset of a downturn and main-tain your peace of mind.

While some people manage to maintain a cool head

during times of economic strug-gles, others may lose sleep when the next recession or downturn rears its ugly head. To avoid suc-cumbing to such stress, consider the following tips to protect your retirement accounts should the economy once again take a turn for the worse.

* Pay attention to your portfolio. Young people just beginning their professional ca-reers are often told to enroll in a 401(k) program as soon as pos-sible, but to avoid making any changes in the near future once the account has been set up. While no investors, young or old, should allow a knee-jerk re-action after a bad financial quar-ter to dictate how they manage their retirement accounts, that doesn’t mean you should ignore an account entirely. Pay atten-tion to your portfolio, examin-ing it at least once per year so you can make adjustments to your investments if need be. Just don’t allow a sudden reaction to a bad quarter dictate these ad-justments, which should only be made after a careful exami-nation of your retirement ac-count’s portfolio and its perfor-mance. If you’re happy with the performance, don’t change a thing.

* Reduce your risk as you age. Financial experts can often predict when the economy will thrive and when it will strug-gle. But unless you are such an expert, avoid playing with fire. As you age, reduce your risk with regard to your investments. Young people can afford to take on more risk because they have more time to make up for a risk that doesn’t work out. Men and women age 50 and older have no such luxury and should recon-figure their retirement accounts as they age so their investments are less risky and more con-servative. This strategy should be put to use even if you lost a substantial amount of money during a previous recession or downturn. It might be tempting to try to make up for lost money, but that strategy carries consid-erable risk, and you might end up depleting your retirement savings a second time.

* Spread the money around. When contributing to a retirement account such as a 401(k), the standard is to de-posit 6 percent of each paycheck into that account. If you’re de-positing more than 6 percent into your retirement account, consider decreasing your retire-ment contribution to the stan-

dard amount and deposit-ing the extra money into a high-interest savings account. The savings account won’t put your deposits at risk, and if the economy is faring well, you will still be doing well with your 401(k) while ensur-ing some of your money won’t suffer should the economy suddenly take a turn for the worse.

* Don’t cash out too early. When the economy struggles, many investors have discov-ered they simply don’t have the stomach for investing. That’s perfectly understandable with certain investments, but a re-tirement account should not be one of them. Cashing out a retirement account too early could incur substantial pen-alties that, if your retirement account was affected poorly by a bad year, may only fur-ther deplete an account you likely spent years building. Avoid the temptation to cash out early if your retirement ac-count is struggling. It’s often not worth the steep price.

“This will be a chance for everyone to get dressed up and have a festive night out together at a very reasonable cost. We know

that grownups will enjoy the eve-ning as much as the kids. We look forward to welcoming parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other special adults in children’s lives – everyone is invited.”

PORTSMOUTH – The New York Theatre

Company will present “Duck and Cover,” opening Feb. 15 at the West End Studio Theatre in Ports-mouth.

1962 - America’s postwar innocence teeters on the brink of a massive culture change: racial integration, feminism, school prayer, Vietnam, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, the birth control pill. Such is the world surrounding “Duck and Cover,” a new play by York playwright/novelist Michael Kimball, who draws from his own boyhood in a suburban Massachu-setts home much like the one he’s created for the stage.

Twelve-year-old Stevie Whitebottom wants a pair of sneakers. Claire, his housewife mother, would like to get her driv-ers license. But Hugh, the loving, yet regimented patriarch, sees

a full reading at the 2012 Boston Theatre Marathon and was a semifinalist at the prestigious 2012 O’Neill Playwright’s Festi-val in Connecticut.

The director of the Ports-mouth production, Kate Braun, was a judge of the New Works Festival competition; she liked the play so much she decided to bring it to Portsmouth. She will be collaborating with consult-ing director Leslie Pasternack, a widely known New Hampshire theater teacher, director, writer and actor.

Playwright Faigen has won a number of national playwrit-

ing awards, and his plays have been performed in Boston, Prov-idence, Buffalo, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Winston-Salem as well as Newburyport.

The Players’ Ring The-ater is located at 105 Marcy St. in Portsmouth. Call 603-436-8123 or visit www.playersring.org. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for students, seniors and members.

From the playwright respon-sible for local favorites “Santa Come Home,” “The Secret of Comedy,” “Best Enemies,” and the Edgar-nominated “Ghosts of Ocean House” comes a brand new comedy that brings a whole new meaning to “Duck and Cover.”

Director Lisa Stathoplos leads Kimball cast veterans Don

Goettler, Michael Crockett, and Gregg Trzaskowski and seasoned actors Kimberly Holliday, Paul Benford-Bruce and Nash Tasker onstage for this world premiere event.

“Duck and Cover” will run Feb. 15 to 24 at the West End Studio Theatre, 959 Islington Street in Portsmouth. With performances at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. PORTSMOUTH —In the dead of winter, spring

can seem very far away -- yet somehow it always arrives. Re-lationships also have their own seasonal cycles, and playwright Joshua Faigen’s award-winning play, “A Book of Snow,” depicts those rhythms with a careful eye.

The Players’ Ring Theater will present the two-act drama on weekends between Feb. 15 and March 3. Tickets are avail-able for 8 p.m. performances on Fridays and Saturdays, and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. by contacting the theater at 603-436-8123 or online at www.play-ersring.org.

Portsmouth-area actors Carol Davenport and Alan Huis-man, who recently starred in “The Gin Game” at Newbury-port’s Firehouse Theater, will play Vera and George, a couple who manage a small and painful triumph against the challenges of marriage. Winter provides the backdrop as the two characters try to understand what it means to live with each other in and out of love.

Fuller Foundation Supports

Children’s Museum with $3,000 Grant

DOVER –The Fuller Foundation re-

cently awarded a $3,000 grant to the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire to help sus-tain and further develop the museum’s Gallery 6 visual arts exhibits and related museum education programs.

Gallery 6 showcases a va-riety of visual arts exhibits of interest to children and adults. Four to six curated exhibits are presented each year, aligned with creative educational activ-ities happening in the museum. The current exhibit on display, “TOYS!” features the whim-sical oil paintings of Anne Scheer as well as vintage toys from past decades. At the same time, museum educators are of-fering toy-making activities for visitors each day so children can create something to play with and take home.

The spring Gallery 6 show theme is folk art, and educators will be offering weekly activi-ties and workshops featuring art processes indigenous to cul-tures from around the world.

Stephanie Ancona, direc-tor of fund development for the museum, stated, “We are grate-ful to the Fuller Foundation for their continued support of our arts programming. Our Gal-lery 6 is often children’s first experience with an art gallery, and we are glad to be part of that learning process.

“We have visitors from a wide range of schools and social service agencies, as well as families from all over New England and beyond. The Fuller Foundation’s support makes it possible for us to pro-vide positive arts encounters with all who come through our doors.”

Gallery 6 shows can be viewed during regular business hours at the museum: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. No admission fee is required to view the gallery only. Regular admission applies for families who wish to explore the rest of the museum.

KITTERY, ME – With a full schedule of main

The award marks the latest in a series for the theater company. Among other programs, the Haas Fund gift will help Stage Force in-troduce to Seacoast audiences the Star Theatre, a new venue at the Kittery Community Center.

The N.H. Charitable Foun-dation manages a collection of charitable funds created by indi-viduals, families and businesses. It awards $30 million annually in grants and scholarships. For ,ore information, visit www.nhcf.org or call 603-224-6641.
