DOVER -Meet Jasper! This hand-

some boy is looking for a quiet home with a patient owner who will help build his confidence. He would do best in a home with kids 12 and over as he is nervous around a lot of noise. He has done well with the cats at the shelter and should be okay with a dog friend in his new home as long as they meet first. Jasper tends to get anxious when he cannot be by your side, so he would do best with an owner who is home a lot. Age: 4 1/2 years; Sex: Neutered Male; Breed: German Shep-herd/Beagle.

For more information, con-tact Cocheco Valley Humane Society at 603-749-5322 or go to www.cvhsonline.org.

PORTSMOUTH -When Hopestill Cheswell

finished building the Georgian house on the corner of Middle and State Street, the real estate listing might have read: Com-fortable and spacious city home. Flexible floor plan: boarding house or single family possibili-ty. Easy access to all Portsmouth offers - taverns, shopping, revo-lutionary meetings and ship-yards. Wonderful garden for summer entertaining.

The house known today as the John Paul Jones House will celebrate its 256th year with its’ first annual garden party and silent auction on Friday, Sep-tember 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the John Paul Jones House Museum Capital Project and contribu-tions will be doubled with a grant from the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). The John Paul Jones House is located at 43 Middle Street in Portsmouth, NH. Admission to the event is free.

The silent auction will include fabulous items such as dining, lodging and theater packages, vacation getaways, historic private tours, and antiques. The garden party will offer cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and the crisp and sophisticated sounds of jazz trio Dry Martini featuring drummer Terry MacDonald, guitarist/composer Marion Campos-Gullotti and bassist Jeff Lind. The trio’s repertoire is a thoughtfully chosen mix

of tunes from the Great Ameri-can Songbook, modern jazz standards, and Latin American gems.

LCHIP grants are awarded to land conservation and histor-ic preservation projects in large and small communities all over the state. The Board of Directors writes, “In fifty years, we see a New Hampshire providing her citizens with protected lands, historic buildings, and cultural resources that combine to estab-lish a sense of place that defines the character of our individual communities and our state and, through its natural beauty, eco-logical diversity, working lands, historic architecture and unique cultural resources, supports our economy and enriches the qual-ity of life for all people who visit or live in the state.”

This event is free and open to the public.

University of New Hamp-shire maritime history pro-fessor and seafarer, Jeffrey Bolster, will be speaking on “Tradition & Craftsmanship of Regional Craft on the Pis-cataqua.” Bolster is the author of several prize-winning books on maritime history, as well as the environmental history of Northwest Atlantic com-mercial fisheries. It also explores the themes of tradition, craftsmanship, family, community, our rela-tionship to nature, and the love of the sea. For more informa-tion on this film go to www.charlottethefilm.com.

Festivities will conclude with the closing of WLHH’s silent auction. Leading up to September 5, interested par-ties can visit WLHH Thursday through Monday from 11-4 to view the exhibition, and place a bid on one of the silent auc-tion items!

PORTSMOUTH -Featuring artwork by

Lennie Mullaney, ‘Prescott Play-ers’ is an exhibit that will take people on a journey through the artist’s multi-faceted inter-pretation of Portsmouth, but more specifically all aspects of Prescott Park and its gardens. Held at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth, the exhibit runs from Sept. 3 through Sept. 26 with an open-ing reception on Sept. 5 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Representing more than Mullaney’s artistic renderings, ‘Prescott Players’ will feature the work of accomplished sculptor Christopher Gowell of Sanctu-ary Arts in Eliot, Maine and an interior natural landscape de-signed by Kim Cady of Ambro-sia Gardens in Portsmouth. As for how the concept came about to include both Gowell and Cady, Mullaney cited a previous collaboration with the former and an “aha moment” with the latter.

Noting Gowell recently invited her to exhibit her paint-ings at the grand opening of her sculpture garden, Mullaney said she was charmed by the com-bination of gardens, sculpture, paintings, artists and visitors in a park-like setting at her art school. “I knew that was the feel-ing I wanted to recreate at my own opening — a living space where everyone is welcomed and nourished by beauty,” she added.

PORTSMOUTH - Auditions for New Hamp-

shire Theatre Project’s Youth Repertory Company will be held on Wednesdays, September 3 & 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at West End Studio Theatre, 959 Islington Street, Portsmouth. For audi-tions, please memorize two con-trasting 1-2 minute monologues, and bring a headshot and resume, or list of theatre experiences and related skills. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian as auditions will in-clude a short interview with stu-dent and parent or guardian. Au-dition slots are 15 minutes.

The NHTP Youth Reperto-ry Company is a pre-professional program designed for gifted, disciplined students ages 10-17 who have demonstrated a seri-ous commitment to learning the craft of theatre. Participation is by

audition only. Repertory Com-pany members have additional opportunities to participate in master classes with professional artists and internships in direct-ing, acting, technical theatre, and drama in education. Attendance at all classes, workshops, rehears-als and performances is manda-tory.

Repertory Company alumni have stressed that par-ticipation in this program was an important factor in their col-lege acceptances. Participants in the NHTP Repertory Company complete all K-12 curriculum requirements for drama in the national standards. Some high schools offer credits for participa-tion.

Recent graduate Brigid Abreau was one of only 15 stu-dents accepted nationally to UCLA’s School of Theater, Film

and Television in 2012. She writes, “NHTP challenged me to explore things I never thought I could. My weaknesses became strengths with the help of this amazing organization. The envi-ronment is one of family – accept-ing and good-hearted.”

Thanks to a generous en-dowment from the Cherylanne Williams Scholarship Fund at the NH Charitable Foundation, some scholarship opportunities are available each year to both the Junior & Senior Companies. Scholarship awards are based on both merit and financial need. Please inquire for additional in-formation.

For additional information about the NHTP Youth Reper-tory Company program, please contact artistic director Gen-evieve Aichele at [email protected] or 603-431-6644.

DURHAM –Two new exhibitions, one

focusing on portraits by Jon Imber, a Massachusetts and Maine-based painter, completed in the years before and in the months after his 2012 diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclero-sis (ALS), the second, featuring prints from the American print revival of the mid-20th century and covers a broad range of ar-tistic movements and styles, will be on view at the Museum of Art, University of New Hampshire, 30 Academic Way, beginning on Sept. 4 with a reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Museum of Art and its’ programs are open to the public free of charge. The exhibi-tions run through October 19.

An art professor at Harvard University for 27 years, Jon Imber was the protégé of Philip Guston and known widely for Maine landscapes painted with his characteristic expressive brush strokes. After his 2012 diagnosis with ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Imber, maintained his artistic practice. As the disease progressed Imber learned to paint with his left hand and in the summer of 2013 began a series of portraits of friends, family, and acquaintances whom he continued to paint until his death in April 2014. These recent

In regards to Cady, Mul-laney said she saw her work while attending a play at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre and immediately felt drawn to it. “It was a very artful piece, so I went to meet the owner Kim and felt a connection,” she said.

As for how she describes her own paintings within the exhibit, Mullaney said she hopes viewers emotionally moved to consider them more than merely “technically proficient pretty pictures.”

“I wanted to depict the

portraits, painted with the art-ist’s commanding expressive ges-tures, intimately record Imber’s time with friends and family, dis-playing physical traces of likeness informed by memories, history, mythology, and the artist’s own self-awareness. The museum presents over 50 portraits from his final series and includes sever-al completed in the early years of his career when he concentrated on figural narrative painting.

In conjunction with Jon Imber: Human Interest, and Museum of Art’s ArtBreak series, a film screening of the documen-tary ‘Jon Imber’s Left Hand’ by filmmaker Richard Kane,

will be shown Sept. 10 at noon. The screening will take place in the Paul Creative Arts Center, UNH Room A-218. Nicholas Ca-passo, Director of the Fitchburg Museum, will present a public gallery talk on Jon Imber’s work, October 1 at noon. The talk will take place in the Museum of Art, Paul Creative Arts Center, UNH.

Also in conjunction, a di-rector’s talk with Kristina Duro-cher, Director of the Museum of Art, will be held on Sept. 24 at noon. The talk will take place in the Museum of Art as well.

This summer Miss Wendy and Mr. Dave raised the stakes with their wager this year. If the Youth/Teens read more hours Wendy would have to cut her hair short and dye it PINK! But - since the Kids read more, Dave had to shave his head (much to Wendy’s amusement) and dye his beard BLUE!

DOVER – The Dover Public Library’s

September ‘Artist of the Month’ exhibit will feature the works of Dover resident Pete Dixon. Pete paints with acrylics because he finds them to be a very forgiv-ing medium. He is largely self-taught, and credits the Dover Public Library with aiding his education by providing access to many art books in its collection. He is returning the favor by do-nating all proceeds from the sale of his displayed works to the Li-brary.

Dixon writes “I like all types of paintings – still life, landscape, portraits and genre and history paintings. However I have a special place in my heart for portraiture and figura-tive painting, because people are what life is really all about.”

many facets of Prescott Park—the beautiful formal gardens, the gardeners who create the magic, couples and families who come to enjoy the flowers, the Arts Festival, the crowds who watch the festival and each other,” she explained.

Noting she also tried to capture the adjacent Naval Shipyard, the Gundalow, Pierce Island Pool, and the Memo-rial Bridge, Mullaney said her deeper intent was to “suggest a world bursting with life.”

“We are all connected to one another, even if just for a moment,” she said. “My paint-ings are a celebration—not just of Prescott Park and not just of Portsmouth, but of who we are as people –always in transition,” she said.

The reception is free and open to the public. For more in-formation, call 603- 431-4230, or email the Gallery at [email protected].

considered to be at the edge of downtown and was amongst only a handful of stately three story homes in the city. In the nineteenth century the house changed hands several times among famous local icons such as Woodbury Langdon and Al-exander Ladd and even more famous tenants like Senator John F. Parrott and Samuel Lord. The house has been known as the John Paul Jones House for several generations. Jones (1747-92), the celebrated naval hero of the American Revolution, spent time in Ports-mouth in 1777 and again in 1781-82. He is believed to have rented a room in this house during 1777, when the widow of Gregory Purcell was oper-ating a boarding house. The Portsmouth Historical Society has operated the house as a museum since 1920. Today, it is the only house in town that interprets all of Portsmouth history; saved by the people of Portsmouth for the people of Portsmouth. “You’ve probably never been inside,” says Execu-tive Director, Maryellen Burke, “so now is your chance to some see, enjoy a great party and help a great cause at the same time.”

For more information about the garden party and silent auction contact Candi Enman at 603-436-8433 or [email protected]. The John Paul Jones House is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

Winner of Barrington Summer Reading Program Announced

At age 50, Dixon decided to get serious about learning to be an artist and spent time prac-ticing and experimenting. He wants to encourage others who have a desire to be creative to work at their dream. He espe-cially encourages Baby Boom-ers like himself who have artis-tic or creative urges to “please act on them! Don’t worry about whether you have any talent; just assume you do and get started.”

So visit the Dover Public Library’s Reference Room during September to see Pete’s work, get inspired to make some of your own, and even borrow some books to get your own artistic talent fired up. You may also consider purchasing an original piece of art by Pete Dixon. Dover Library is located at 73 Locust Street.

As an investor, you’re well aware that, over the

short term, the financial markets always move up and down. During your work-ing years, you may feel that you have time to overcome this volatility. And you’d be basing these feelings on actual evidence: the longer the investment period, the greater the tendency of the markets to “smooth out” their performance. But what happens when you retire? Won’t you be more suscepti-ble to You may not be as vul-nerable as you might think. In the first place, given our growing awareness of health-ier lifestyles, you could easily spend two, or even three, decades in retirement — so your investment time frame isn’t necessarily going to be that compressed.

Nonetheless, it’s still true that time may well be a more important consider-ation to you during your re-tirement years, so you may want to be particularly vigi-lant about taking steps to help smooth out the effects of

market volatility. Toward that end, here are a few suggestions:

Allocate your investments among a variety of asset classes.

Of course, proper asset al-location is a good investment move at any age, but when you’re retired, you want to be especially careful that you don’t “over-concentrate” your invest-ment dollars among just a few assets. Spreading your money among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, government securi-ties and so on —can help you avoid taking the full brunt of a downturn that may primarily hit just one type of investment. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t assure a profit or protect against loss.)

Choose investments that have demonstrated solid performance across many market cycles.

As you’ve probably heard, “past performance is no guar-antee of future results,” and this is true. Nonetheless, you

can help improve your outlook by owning quality investments. So when investing n stocks, choose those that have actual earnings and a track record of earnings growth. If you invest in fixed-income vehicles, pick those that are considered “in-vestment grade.”

Don’t make emotional decisions.

At various times during your retirement, you will, in all likelihood, witness some sharp drops in the market. Try to avoid overreacting to these downturns, which will prob-ably just be normal market “corrections.” If you can keep your emotions out of investing, you will be less likely to make moves such as selling qual-ity investments merely because their price is temporarily down.

Don’t try to “time” the market.

You may be tempted to “take advantage” of volatility by looking for opportunities to “buy low and sell high.” In theory, this is a fine idea — but, unfortunately, no one can really predict market highs or

lows. You’ll probably be better off by consistently investing the same amount of money into the same investments. Over time, this method of investing may result in lower per-share costs. However, as is the case with di-versification, this type of “sys-tematic” investing won’t guar-antee a profit or protect against loss, and you’ll need to be will-ing to keep investing when share prices are declining.

It’s probably natural to get somewhat more apprehen-sive about market volatility during your retirement years. But taking the steps described above can help you navigate the sometimes-choppy waters of the financial world.
