    WHY mHEALTH? WHY NOW?

    Over 70 percent of the worlds more than fivebillion mobile subscribers live in emergingeconomies.

    In Thailand, community health workers callpatients daily to remind them to take theirmedication. Drug treatment compliance forpatients in the program has reached 90percent.

    In South Africa, a SMS campaign promotingHIV/AIDS awareness resulted in nearly atripling of call volume to a local HIV/AIDShelpline.

    In Uganda, a SMS-based test result systemhas cut infant diagnosis of HIV from threemonths to two weeks. HIV-positive infants atparticipating clinics receiving treatment havemore than doubled, from 40 percent to 90

    percent.

    Mobile technology holds incredible potential toaccelerate the health-related UN MillenniumDevelopment Goals, particularly in places withthe worlds highest disease burdens and

    lowest patient-to-doctor ratios.
