Anti-trust caution

• GS1 operates under the GS1 anti-trust caution. Strict compliance with anti-trust laws is

and always has been the policy of GS1.

• The best way to avoid problems is to remember that the purpose of the group is to

enhance the ability of all industry members to compete more efficiently.

• This means:

- There shall be no discussion of prices, allocation of customers, or products, boycotts,

refusals to deal, or market share.

- If any participant believes the group is drifting toward impermissible discussion, the topic shall be

tabled until the opinion of counsel can be obtained.

• The full anti-trust caution is available via the link below, if you would like to read it in its

entirety: http://www.gs1.org/gs1-anti-trust-caution.

GS1 terminology and stakeholders

• Terminology :

- Building Industry : includes public/private/commercial buildings

- Construction Industry : broader, includes also infrastructure projects (bridges, roads, ports)

• GS1 at global level addresses Construction : current focus mainly on buildings and rail

infrastructure

• Current stakeholders in Construction as defined in Industry report (page 24) :

- Stakeholders of interest for GS1: Civil engineers, construction contractors, construction engineers, building

service engineers, facility managers, public authorities, material and tool manufacturers, rental companies

and Academia (Universities and other institutions for Architects and Engineers)

- Overlap/connection to other industries: DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Retail, Energy, Engineering, Mining and

Railways (infrastructure)

• MO focus TI increases with Industry presence in local MO Mgt Board of Directors (AU, NO)

Scope of our activities in Construction

General

• Promote use of GS1 (Identify-Capture-Share) standards for Products and processes in

- Supply Chain (building phase of new constructions)

- Life-Cycle Management (existing constructions)

…to support the Industry on its path to digitalisation (incl. BIM, but not exclusively)

Specific

• Digital twin of a physical item : requires globally unique identification (sGTIN+GIAI)

• Qualitative Master Data of building material (from a single source) (“Verified by GS1”)

• Procurement processes (EDI)

• (on-site) Logistics efficiency (SSCC+GLN)

• Facility Management (EPCIS)

The construction sector….

Action in seven areas can boost the sector’s productivity by 50 to 60%* :

1. Reshape regulation and raise transparency

2. Rewire the contractual framework

3. Rethink design and engineering processes

4. Improve procurement and supply-chain mgt

5. Improve onsite execution

6. Infuse digital technology & advanced automation

7. Reskill the workforce

What is BIM ?

What is BIM…(and what is BAM and BOOM)?

Is it…

• …a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility ?

• …a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility during its life-cycle ?+

• …a process supported by various tools and technologies involving the generation and

management of digital representations of places ?

• …a set of files which can be extracted, exchanged or networked to support decision-making

regarding a built asset ?

BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on

a construction project across the project lifecycle. One of the key outputs of this process is the

Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset. This

model draws on information assembled collaboratively and updated at key stages of a

project. Creating a digital Building Information Model enables those who interact with the

building to optimize their actions, resulting in a greater whole life value for the asset *.

The 7 year itch…? Quite the opposite !

• GS1 Germany since 2013 focus on Technical Industries

- Automotive, Mechanical Engineering, Railways, Defence,

Construction and Wind Energy

• In 2019 TI @ GS1 Germany accounts for:

- 20% of existing membership revenue

- 33% of new membership revenue (2nd after Retail/FMCG)

- 42% of new membership revenue (if incl. cancellations)

But what were the success factors for that?

• A high level of intrinsic motivation, diligence, tenacity, curiosity about new industries,

people and processes, and in-depth (process) understanding of the respective industry.

• Like a coach of a football team who has to "read" a football game, we must be able to

"read" an industry and convince our (potential) customers with our GS1 standards,

which takes time.

• Our approaches are diverse and, in particular, sustainable

Missing Link…liaison with other standard WGs

• Other than the business groups that each of us manages in the

Construction/BIM area, are there any of you who follow the work at the

international level concerning ISO groups (or its equivalent at the

national level)?

• What are the main actions that can be taken in response to strong

lobbying by certain (local) actors?

• This is an important point to align because in our business groups

(typically the one with buildingSMART Int.) we always refer to

standards retained in ISO/CEN.

• ISO 19650 / ISO/TC 59/SC 13

• CEN TC 442

GS1 Finland : Target

Similar ”joint statement” as GS1 Sweden has developed

• How to get there:

➢ Group meeting for construction companies and industry associations -> starting the

discussion about a joint statement

➢ Another event for the companies from the supply side -> practical information on how to

identify, capture and share product information

➢ Finding “an ambassador” to start a project or pilot

GS1 Finland : Major challenges

We have faced three major challenges during this project:

1. National standards and practices

• National/sector-based identification systems

• Resistance to change

2. Construction industry is a close-knit community

3. How to make simple and industry-wise materials

• GS1 system is not very well known among the industry (if at all)

• Cooperation between MOs would be appreciated

First tests using GTINs to import textures in 3D design

• Together with „DesignExpress” Poland, a supplier of Vectorworks design software, we made

the first tests using a GTIN number to use „Tubadzin” tiles, whose parameters can be

downloaded from the network.

First doubts and questions

▪ At what point is the identification method to be used during the entire design process?

BIM libraries should be created with such code and designers can use the library data from the manufacturer's website for free

▪ For public procurement, you do not need information on a specific product, only a group of products that could be used and have specific properties.

If a specific product classification is used, GS1 can subordinate GPC to them

▪ What profits will such coding bring us in the architectural program?

Answer is not concrete…

Status Sep 2019 Construction @ GS1 Sweden

• GTIN decision April 2018

• Many companies and trade associations visiting our Concept Center

• Furnishing companies also very interested in GTIN for their products

• Building contractors start asking for GTIN on building products

• Digitalisation projects, e.g. Swedish Wood (trade organisation), to connect planning/design

phase etc to the purchase and supply chain of the physical products using GS1 standards

• Active part in Digital Supply Chain in the Built Environment User Group

• Active part in BIM alliance

• Partly active in Smart Built Environment (Government funded strategic innovation program)

• GS1 Sweden user group Built Environment formed with first meeting planned Oct 15

- Among other things “standardise” the use in construction of

• GTIN, GLN, SSCC etc

• GTIN for configurable products

• GMN in construction
