CESS- Center for Sustainable System Studies
The Center for Sustainable System Studies- CESS has as objective to develop studies on systems to improve the sustainability of the urban, industrial and logistics systems.
Our objective is to identify opportunities in several areas and segments with a focus on ensuring that available resources today, also can be used by the future generations. To accomplish the progress towards the sustainability it is necessary maintenance and improvement of both systems that meet human beings as the well-being of the ecosystems involved in this task. Our challenge is to help in the diffusion of the sustainability concepts in the Brazilian society.

CESS- Center for Sustainable System Studies
The CESS have been studying about the Brazilian social problems that have not been solved yet. The CESS is acting in the field of research and insights, gathering information and results, build methods of research, case studies, study the tools and strategies to deal with humanitarian logistics problems, collaborative and urban logistics, management and control of ballast water and pollutions associated to maritime transport, recycling of ships, as well as port logistics and environmental impacts originating from it’s operations. Also, the CESS take new topics as seaports and green logistics.
Therefore, the CESS is interested in studying unsolved problems in Brazilian society, as well as being CESS goes along with the new thoughts and the management and control methods into the logistics service which have been developed around the world.
Thus, the CESS can serve as a point of support for decision makers , entrepreneurs, managers and politicians, besides other interested parts of the civil society in the discussion of the themes that permeate sustainability.

Research areas – Ballast water

The Ballast water is used to provide stability to ships and ensure it maneuverability . However , it is responsible to transfer exotic species carried in it contributing to the impact on marine biota and the transfer of pathogens and others. Thus, the CESS is studying the impacts of the operations of ships in Brazilian ports due to ballast water. In addition, we are checking the mechanisms of management and control adopted in Brazil and other countries. Also, we are currently analyzing data from ships operating in Brazilian ports and working in partnership with other institutions such as the CILIP / USP , UFMA and UNIFAP .

Camila Pescarine
The Colaborative Logistics is defined as the colaboration between partners from the supply chain, such as suppliers, manufacturing, customers or other members . As this matter is still little studied in Brazil, the CESS has an interest in identifying it’s impact on the Brazilian market. In this case we are studying the UBER’s problem in Brazil in terms of it’s acceptance by users, drivers, the cost associated with this operation, as well as the conflicts generated from these new concept of sharing transport services.

The CESS has conducted studies in terms of maritime transport logistics , port and green logistics. Within shipping we are analyzing the behavior of vessels in Brazilian ports and flow of cargo through the ports . Another group is dedicating the new technologies applied to green logistics, such as greenways a new concept in Brazil , as well as the criteria for sustainable or green ports.

The Humanitarian Logistics is responsible for the mobilization of people, financial and technical resources to help victimized communities by natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, avalanches , volcanic eruptions , floods, landslides and tsunamis, and damage caused by the man who has impacts on human life and the environment, such as radiation leaks , explosions, oil spills and other impacts. We are studying the impact of recent events that took place on the cities of Teresopolis, Petropolis and Angra dos Reis in the quest to create innovative solutions that help to identify and measure the impacts .
