GRUPO ARANEA
Aranea (lat. Net) is a multidisciplinary team of architects,
engineers, landscape experts, artists, biologists, sociologists
and historians, created with the intention to take care of
a wide range of architectural challenges and territorial
interventions; much wider than a traditional architectural
company.
The office was founded twelve years ago in Alicante. It is
based in Spain but works both in the local and international
field, in any context, place or country. We try to express our
own philosophy in the most effective and representative
way, in fields such as architecture, landscape, planning,
exhibitions, art and teaching.
From the beginning/Since its creation we have obtained
different national and international prizes, among others
awards, 1st prize in a national competition for a Public Library
in San Vicente, Spain (2001), 1st prize in an international
competition for Terms Complex in Asturias, Spain (2002),
1st prize in a national competition for a Secondary School
in Alicante, Spain (2003), 1st prize in an international
competition for 111 Apartments in San Juan, Spain (2007),
1st prize in an international competition for a Public Park
in an old valley in Elche, Spain (2009) and 1st prize in
a competition for invitation for an Urban Environmental
Observatory in Alicante, Spain (2009).
Our work, included in important international exhibitions, is
nowadays a part of the permanent exhibition in the MoMA
in New York. The international critic is very interested in our
projects and distinguishes us as one of the promising teams
of young architects in the international architectural scene.
ARCHITECTURAL MODEL 0269
Q. Why do you make an architectural model? What
significance does it have in architecture?
: We believe that making architectural models forces
us to think constantly about the building as of
three-dimensional object and not just a flat drawing
on a paper. We find it easier to look for appropriate
proportions, to form different spaces and to work
with the context, using both physical and digital
models. Also, we find physical model a perfect way to
present projects for clients, which are not related to
architecture in everyday life.
Q. How important is ‘model-making’ in your
architectural practice?
: It’s very important.
Q. Is there a way to make good models? What is
especially important in models?
: We like to make models out of one piece of material,
what allows us to present project as a cohesive
concept and makes the making-process fast and
productive. It is important for us to express with the
model the idea of the projects and its relation with the
context.
Q. What style of models do you prefer to make?
: We make both physical and digital models. We adjust
type of the model to the project and the phase of
designing process.
Q. What kind of models do you make depending on
the project phase? Is it at different scale for every
step? What kind of model is the most important?
: We chose the scale of the model depending on the
type and the size of the building. Usually we start with
bigger scale (1:200, 1:500- architectural projects; 1:500,
1:1000, 1:2000- urban projects) and as we develop the
project, little by little, we get to smaller scales (1:100,
1:50). The scale that we chose is also related with the
stage of the project. As a general rule we make small
and fast working-models (1:200, 1:500) and bigger
final models for presentations and exhibitions. For us
both working and presentation models are equally
important.
Q. What materials do you usually use? Are there
different materials for different design phase?
What’s the reason? Where do you get your ideas on
materials?
: We use all types of materials, from typical
(cardboards, papers, plastic, wood, balsa wood, etc.)
to recycled (cartons, boxes, aluminum foil, matches,
straws, sponges, lego blocks, etc.).
Q. What kind of tools do you use?
: We use rather basic tools in the office, as cutters,
rulers, different types of glue (spray glue, joiners glue,
etc.), spray paint, sticky tapes, foam cutting machine,
etc. Sometimes we cut special pieces for the models
with laser cutting machine outside the office.
Q. How do you document and store your models?
: To document models we make pictures of each
stage of the making-process. We do not have any
particular place to store models. We keep them in
different places in the office, so that we are constantly
surrounded by them and we can use the experience
from each one in future projects.
Q. Anything new you would like to try in ‘model-
making’?
: Everything we haven’t tried so far.
Q. Are there any questions or curiosity on someone
else’s model?
: We would like to see model of Rolex Learning Center
of Sanna in 1:1 scale.

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL 0271
A. STUDY MODEL_1SIZE: 80 X 50 CM SCALE: 1: 400TIME: 5 HOURSMATERIALS: STONEWARE
making process:
The purpose of this model is to look for relations
between the building and the surrounding area. It
is made in stoneware, what allows us to work fast,
intuitively and to change the form continuously.
B. STUDY MODEL_2 SIZE: 50 X 30 CMSCALE: 1:400TIME: 3 HOURS MATERIALS: STONEWARE
making process:
After making a model of the building with the
surroundings we decide to concentrate more on the
form of the building. Using the same material we make
few different versions of the project to find the most
appropriate and unique form of Salamandra.
C. FINAL MODEL_1SIZE: 75 X 75 CMSCALE: 1:300TIME: 15 DAYSMATERIALS: BALSA WOOD
making process:
This model is the first one made for a public
presentation. We decide to use balsa wood because
of its physical properties, especially the flexibility. We
cut all the pieces with the cutting machine and then,
little by little, we stick all the pieces together with
joiner’s glue.

D. FINAL MODEL_2SIZE: 100 X 100 CMSCALE: 1:200TIME: 1 MONTHMATERIALS: METHACRYLATE
making process:
We make from polystyrene foam a basic model, which
serves us as a base to model the external walls and
to obtain the most appropriate and precise shape of
the building. We cut it with the cutting machine and
than we rag all the surfaces with the abrasive paper
to get the smoothest walls possible. We prepare each
piece of the external wall and the roof separately. We
take all the dimensions from the base and we model
the surface in high temperature until we obtain the
exact shape.

A. FINAL MODELSIZE: 80 X 50 CMSCALE: 1:300TIME: 1 HOURMATERIALS: WHITE CARDBOARD, PENCIL
making process:
The model is made of one piece of white cardboard.
First we draw many sketches to obtain the most optimal
and satisfying outline of the building. After that we cut
the cardboard following the chosen lines. Each cut is
made with one movement. This way of working allows
us to get dynamic and continues lines, with straight
edges. At the end, we pull some parts up and we
lowered the other ones to shape the building and the
terrain.

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL 0275
B. STUDY MODELSIZE: 40 X 40 CMSCALE: 1: 300TIME: 5 HOURSMATERIALS: CARDBOARD OF DIFFERENT COLOURS, POLYSTYRENE FOAM
making process:
The first model is a trial to find the most appropriate
way of working to obtain the most natural form of the
building and, at the same time, the closest to the
surrounding. Disappointed with the final effect we
decide to make the building and the land from one
piece of material.

MODELSIZE: 3,8-5,5 X 9,0-10,2 CM (6 DIFFERENT MODELS)SCALE: 1: 500TIME: 10-15 MINUTES MATERIALS: CARBON PAPER
making process:
We make a set of small studying models to find the most appropriate form of the
project. Each one is made of carbon paper. We cut a form that we like, and than we
band all the shores (we lower them or we pull them up) to obtain different shapes
and to try various possibilities of the building in its surroundings. It is an easy and fast
way of working that allows us to try many options in a short time.

URBAN PLAN FOR NATURAL RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT
making process:
The concept of the project is to create a building,
which is a part of the existing landscape. That is
why we decide to make both the building and the
surrounding out of one piece of material. To obtain a
natural shape of the terrain we start with a base, which
we built of a lot of long pieces of 2mm cardboard,
placed every 5 centimetres in both directions, in
such a way that they create a sort of a mesh and a
frame for a top part of the model. The heights of the
pieces change gradually in order that natural form of
the landscape is possible. The top part of the model
imitates the existing landscape with our intervention
and it is made of one sheet of white, thin cardboard.

making process:
The model is made to show relations between external
and internal spaces and between courtyards. It
is hand-made model, made of 1 mm (walls and
furniture) and 2 mm (the roof) polyvinyl chloride foam
boards. The base is 1 cm polyvinyl chloride board. We
use conventional tools (knife, rule and joiner’s glue)
and methods to cut and glue all the pieces together.
All the furniture, as beds, tables, wardrobes, is also
hand-made (1mm polyvinyl chloride). Trees are made
of 3 mm polyvinyl chloride boards, cut into thin and
long elements (trunk) and divided on the top into tree
parts, on which we place small pieces of sponge,
painted sea green.

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL 0283
making process:
The model of the project is made of few levels, which can be grouped into 3 main
parts: a base, supports and a roof. Grey cardboard is the only material used in the
model. The first stage is to prepare the base, which contains the basement and the
ground floor. Next we cut lines in strategic places on the ground floor, in which we
place walls of different heights. The walls are the main structure of the whole model
and, at the same time, they support the roof. The last layer- the roof- is made of one
piece of cardboard board. We cut it in appropriate places and we model the surface
to obtain the exact shape of the designed building.

making process:
The model contains two main parts. The first one is the
existing city and the other one- our proposal for the
plot. Both stages are developing simultaneously. First of
all, we prepare all the pieces for the city. We cut them
with the cutting machine, we group them and glue all
together independently from the project. We let some
free space for the project so that we can try different
solutions and forms of the extension. Finally, we place
the chosen version of the project on the base and stick
it permanently with the joiner’s glue.

ARCHITECTURAL MODEL 0287
making process:
The model of the project, because of its big size, is
divided into 3 single models (each one 1,2 meters
long), in such a way that it is easier to transport from
one place to another. For each model we design
a metal frame and a special wooden base, both
custom-made by locksmith and carpenter. The frame
as well as the base has irregular form, which follows
the outline of the plot. All the elements of the model
are made of different type of methacrylate: matt
for the terrain, transparent and translucent for the
existing (buildings, bridges, etc.) and glistening for the
project (new pats and bridges). All the small pieces
we cut with the cutting machine, except the levels
of the terrain. To mark where the green areas are we
make groups of small holes in the top layer by hand
drill. Some of them we use to place tress made of
thin, plastic tubes. After cutting and preparing all the
pieces it takes us one day to put everything together
and obtain the final result.
