The learner will identify:• The purpose for Close Reading
• Different Close Reading strategies to use with students in their classroom
CLOSE READING VS CLOZE READING
What’s the difference?
• Close Reading – an end conclusion; careful, sustained interpretation of a text in order to develop a deep understanding
• Cloze Reading – activity in which words are omitted from a passage and students are required to fill in the blanks

Addition!!
An extensive body of research links the CLOSE READING of complex text—whether the student is a struggling reader or advanced—to significant gains in reading proficiency and finds close reading to be a key component of college and career readiness.

WHEN THE TEXT GETS TOUGH
Independent Readers:Figure out what’s
confusing themUse MANY strategies for
getting through textKnow how to make the
mostly invisible process of comprehension visible
WHEN THE TEXT GETS TOUGH
Dependent Readers:• STOP• Appeal to the TEACHER• Read on through• Keep the mostly
invisible process of comprehension at the invisible level
CLOSE READING AND OUR STUDENTS
Our students: May be taught multiple
comprehension strategiesBenefit from direct & explicit
teaching of the comprehension strategy
Benefit from direct vocabulary study
Benefit from a wide range of reading
CLOSE READING STRATEGIES
CLOSE READING STRATEGIES
These strategies will help inform
the teacher’s instruction
based on needs of students
Use close reading
strategies to assist students when meaning breaks down
Direct & explicit instruction is
critical

CLOSE READING STRATEGIES FOR DIFFERENT TIMES DURING READING
COLLABORATIVE WORKCreate a chart using words, pictures, or symbols to show the steps for the strategy
KYLENE BEERS ON STRUGGLING READERS
CLOSE READING STRATEGIES –TIPS FOR IMPLEMENTATION
Use short text at first
Aim for independence
Teach students to ask questions
Focus on observing & analyzing
It may take multiple times to teach & model the strategy
READING CHANGES LIVES
As a teen, how does this apply to me and my world as a whole?
*Critical element*
REVISIT TEXT
Re-read text
Refer to your close reading strategy notes & be prepared to share if any of these assisted you in making meaning
As you re-read, annotate your text in the margins – “think aloud” making notes of the author’s intended meaning of each section
When you are finished, write an overall main idea of this selection
MAKE THE TEXT WHOLE LEARNER RELEVANT
