CALLED TO BE HEALERS Whenever you enter a town and they receive youheal the sick in it and say to them, The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” Luke 10:8-9 In these verses, Jesus is sending the wider band of disciples, the seventy-two, forth to heal and proclaim the kingdom as they prepare the way for Him to come. As this di- rection was given to the wider band of Jesusfollowers, I believe that they hold true for all who belong to Jesus, for the whole Church. As followers of Jesus, we are to be people of healing, and we need to expect to be healers. How, though, can that actually come to pass? This passage shows us three things. First, Jesus gives them, and us, His own authority. To put that another way, we don t possess the power to heal, He gives it to us. That is an incredibly important thing to remember. Our role is to pray for healing and be an active part of that process for people, but the power doesnt belong to us. We join in Je- suswork as we become a vehicle of healing for people, but we are never the source – Jesus is. In order to be a vehicle, then, we need to prayerfully keep ourselves connected to Jesus through surrendered and de- pendent abiding in Him. Second, the act of healing is a demonstration of the presence of the Kingdom which is meant to open the way to proclamation. We are to healand say.The healing is a gracious and loving gift to the one in need, but it is meant to open people to the greater spiritual healing that comes from recognizing that Jesus is the Savior they need. The signs and wonders that Jesus worked and that He expected His Church to continue to work are meant to be a demonstration that the message is true. We need to pair proclamation with our com- passionate work. Third, we need to step out in faith and actually do this if we will ever see results . The seventy-two returned with joy.(Luke 10:17). We wont experience the joy of seeing signs and wonders if we never go forth and try it. But, and I think this is hid- den deeper in the text, these disciples had already experienced this through Jesusministry. They had seen it happen and were going forth as those who had been trained. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be healers. I want to encourage you to consider being a part of an upcoming opportunity to learn more about how to extend this kind of ministry. On Saturday, September 7, our healing ministry of the Order of St. Luke (OSL) is hosting a Healing Conference with speakers Mike Evans and Timothy Berry. The conference, which runs from 9a-4p, will focus on teaching and equipping disciples for healing ministry. That evening at 6pm, there will be a healing service that is open to all and is free of charge. There is more information in this newsletter on the conference and how to register. I will be there and I hope to see you there, too! Yours in Christ, 1 The Messenger AUGUST 2019 Growing as Disciples of Jesus Christ through Worship, Learning, Fellowship and Outreach

CALLED TO BE HEALERS “Whenever you enter a town and they receive you…heal the sick in it and say to them,

‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’” Luke 10:8-9 In these verses, Jesus is sending the wider band of disciples, the seventy-two, forth to heal and proclaim the kingdom as they prepare the way for Him to come. As this di-rection was given to the wider band of Jesus’ followers, I believe that they hold true for all who belong to Jesus, for the whole Church. As followers of Jesus, we are to be people of healing, and we need to expect to be healers. How, though, can that actually come to pass? This passage shows us three things. First, Jesus gives them, and us, His own authority. To put that another way, we don’t possess the power to heal, He gives it to us. That is an incredibly important thing to remember. Our role is to pray for healing and be an active part of that process for people, but the power doesn’t belong to us. We join in Je-sus’ work as we become a vehicle of healing for people, but we are never the source – Jesus is. In order to be a vehicle, then, we need to prayerfully keep ourselves connected to Jesus through surrendered and de-pendent abiding in Him. Second, the act of healing is a demonstration of the presence of the Kingdom which is meant to open the way to proclamation. in need, but it is meant to open people to the greater spiritual healing that comes from recognizing that Jesus is the Savior they need. The signs and wonders that Jesus worked and that He expected His Church to continue to work are meant to be a demonstration that the message is true. We need to pair proclamation with our com-passionate work. Third, we need to step out in faith and actually do this if we will ever see results. “The seventy-two returned with joy.” (Luke 10:17). We won’t experience the joy of seeing signs and wonders if we never go forth and try it. But, and I think this is hid-

FAMILY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

When we hear the word “family,” what do we tend to think of? Perhaps the dreaded an-nual summer family reunion where all of the crazy relatives show up and share all of the stories that we had hoped to never have to relive. Or maybe we think about a weekend dinner and movie night where we all settle down on the couch after a long week apart from one another.

But what does it mean to be a family? What are the characteristics which make up a family and what are the origins of family? These questions could simply be answered through scientific facts of genetics and the makeup of blood relations but let’s take this to a different level:

How has God designed the family and how does family relate to who He is?

To best grasp the family relationship, it is good to reflect upon the origins of the family, found in the first chapters of the book of Genesis. Here, we first notice that God creates humanity, male and female, in His own image:

Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. - Gen 1:26-27

If humanity is created in the image of God, then the family (the most basic societal unit) must also reflect God in some way. In fact, it is implied in the very next verse, as we see the command to humanity to “Be fruitful and multiply (Gen 1:28).” This command implies two things:

1) Part of imaging God, is through co-creating, highlighted through childbear ing in this instance. 2) The family (the result of multiplying) is reflective of God Himself.

We see this theme unfold throughout Scripture and at its climax in the incarnation, where God the Son enters humanity as a part of a family.

Over the next several months, I’d like to explore the origins of family as accounted to us through scripture and what this teaches us about who God is and what He has designed for us to be.

Most of the Bible traces the story of a particular family and it is through this family that God even chose to enter into His creation through in the person of Jesus. There are ups and downs, unity and fracture, covenants and broken promises, fidelity and betrayal that mark the guideposts of this family. Yet each has something to teach us about what family is and what family is not. Each success and failure seems to lead to further longing for the ultimate fulfillment of the

family that can only find its true meaning and belonging in God.

Construction continues as the building is being “wrapped” in preparation for stucco. Once done, windows, drywall and other interior work will begin. We anticipate the building being completed around the beginning of October.

Our preschool summer programs are going great! Both the preschoolers and the school-age kids are engaged in many educational and fun activities. I can’t believe the summer is going by so quickly! This month the kids enjoyed a fun and yummy July 4th BBQ, several sport competitions and even a Soap Box Derby Race that wrapped around the front of Trinity’s Campus. We had a blast! Fr. Karl could be seen cheering them on! To complete the last few weeks of summer, we will have fun in the water, participate in a woodshop and canvas painting craft lesson, more science projects, education fun and continuing our sharing the love of Jesus with our wonderful students.

A cute story to share: The mother of a student stopped by my office and wanted to share how wonderful Trinity Preschool is. She began to tell me how her son has flourished in the very short time he has attended, and her family couldn’t be more happier and thankful for our preschool program. She then proceeded to share that her son now asks to lead their family in prayer each night. What an awesome testimony for Trinity Pre-school!

Our fall roster for 2019-2020 is full! We now have a wait-list for anyone interested in joining our Amazing preschool. We are truly blessed and ready for another wonderful school year.

I am getting a lot of requests for donation items that we made need. Here is a small list of examples: Crayola Markers, Crayons, Construction paper, Lego’s, games, dress up, Barbies, dolls, trucks, blocks, Hot wheels, (all age appropriate. 2-6 yrs. old), Clorox wipes, Tissue, or 3oz paper Dixie Cups. Thank you for all you do! Much Love, Jennifer Coburn -Director

HEALING CONFERENCE

Sponsored by Trinity Anglican Church and the Bakersfield

chapter of the healing ministry of the Order of St. Luke

Featuring Mike Evans and Timothy Berry

Mike Evans, the founder of Wholeness Ministries, has been known

for over twenty years for being passionate about one thing above all

other things: teaching followers of Jesus how to make healing prayer

a normal part of their daily life. To know how to pray for the sick at

the grocery store, the mall, where we pick up our morning coffee,

etc. Through his book, Learning To Do What Jesus Did, you will

learn that this can become normal for all believers.

Timothy Berry, at the age of 19, experienced an encounter with the

Lord that launched him into a pursuit of experiencing and under-

standing God’s love, presence and power. He traveled with Randy

Clark to conferences, renewal meetings and crusades here in the U.S.

and in other countries throughout the world where he has seen doz-

ens of deaf ears healed, blind eyes restored and multiple diseases and

conditions healed. Timothy also preaches a strong message about the

love of God, resulting in many receiving breakthroughs in their lives

and ministries through the power of the Holy Spirit.
