A major town of the former province of Maine, county town of Sarthe, Le Mans has a rich history and a unique heritage. Le Mans has a hidden gem in its midst: the Cité Plantagenêt, birthplace of the Plantagenet dynasty (Henry II was King of England). The large historical quarter comprises the most beautiful, varied architecture imaginable.

The Cité Plantagenet covers a dozen hectares encircled by a 3rd and 4th century Roman wall. There are over a hundred half-timbered houses and many Renaissance, Baroque and Classic mansions. One of the town’s landmarks, the Saint-Julien cathedral unfolds like a book, within which visitors can read history, archaeology and the result of plenty of teamwork.

Le Mans is a surprising, multi-faceted town and has been chosen as a location for several award-winning films. The town also has sporting facilities and is known the world over for the 24 hour endurance races (cars, motorbikes and trucks).
