“I told them, I will match theirgift and will give it to my favoriteschool,” ani Tantoco sa kanyang

maikling pananalita.

Rosales said he wasahead of Pradhan at acounter line 8 a.m. lastThursday when an Immi-gration personnel they

identified as Omar Yunusasked about “personalmatters”, including her re-lationship with Pradhanbefore stamping her pass-port for departure.

Introducing himself asfrom CILA, Pradhan saidhe inquired from Yunuswhy Rosales was askedpersonal questions.

“That was when all theImmigration people therestarted being confronta-

tional from beginning toend. Most of the Immigra-tion personnel refused toidentify themselves and wecame to know of theiridentities only from theirname tags whom some ofthem tried to cover,”Pradhan said.

Pradhan said his que-ry apparently infuriatedYunus who told him to goto the pre-departure areaand leave behind his girl-

friend.Rosales said that

while her passport was al-ready stamped for depar-ture, Yunus again told herto fill up a form, but shefailed to state how muchher plane ticket cost asPradhan had paid for it.

Rosales said she wasthen told to go to the deskof another Immigration per-sonnel she and her boy-friend later came to knowas one Jeffrey Pinpin. Shesaid Pinpin again askedher about her family anddocuments about her be-ing a local student.

“I had been abroad be-fore and I was never askedto produce such docu-ments, so I said I did notcarry such documents atthat time,” Rosales said.

She said another Immi-gration personnel, a wom-an who covered her identi-fication card on her breastwhen asked to be identi-fied, demanded anotherrequirement that includeda seminar by the Commis-

sion on Filipino Overseas(CFO).

“She got furious whenI said I would call Jeff(Pradhan) who was still inthe pre-departure area. She said mine was a hope-less case,” she said.

Pradhan said he optednot to proceed with his tripto Hong Kong without Ro-sales.

When he asked to talkto higher airport authori-ties, Pradhan said one Ze-naida Cruz showed upwith a torn piece of paper on which she underscoredwith ballpen stating theneed for Rosales to firstseek certification from theCFO.

“She was evidently per-turbed when she later sawmy girlfriend’s passportalready stamped for de-parture for Hong Kong,”Pradhan said.

ereign rights and livelihoodrights. The Beijing govern-ment should recognizeand respect our fishermenasserting these politicaland sovereign rights overScarborough Shoal,” theletter said.

Hicap, who is also vicechairperson of the Anak-pawis party list, “remind-ed” Jiabao that his group’srequest was in behalf of“small Filipino fisherfolk”and “should merit the fullrecognition of the Beijinggovernment.”

The Armed Forces of thePhilippines (AFP) has re-ported that Filipino fisher-men have returned to Pa-natag Shoal, sharing thedisputed waters with Chi-nese fisherfolk under thewatch of both Philippine andChinese maritime ships.

Lt. Gen. Anthony Al-cantara, chief of the North-ern Luzon Command (Nol-com) reported that six Fil-ipino fishing boats wereanchored on Sunday in thelagoon in the middle of acluster of reefs and is-lands in the area.

Hicap noted “this wasthe first time the Philippinemilitary reported the pres-ence of Filipino fishermen

FROM PAGE 1

‘Refrain from harassing fishermen’in the area since the stand-off began on April 10 whentwo Chinese surveillanceships stopped the Philip-pine Navy from accompa-nying eight Chinese fishingboats loaded with poachedmarine species.”

Earlier, Pamalakayasaid some 200,000 smallscale fishermen could bedisplaced by the continu-ing conflict at the Scarbor-ough shoal.

“We take pride in con-gratulating our fisherfolkcolleagues for asserting thecountry’s sovereign rightsand territorial integrity. Asfar as we are concerned, our fishing peers are theones who champion thecause of national sover-eignty and territorial integ-rity and not the Manila gov-ernment,” Hicap said.

He said Filipino fisher-men “will persist in fishingat Panatag Shoal be-cause they believe it is partof the country’s territorialwaters.”

“If the Manila govern-ment believes PanatagShoal is our territory, thenthere is no reason why itshould discourage smallfishermen from exercisingtheir sovereign rights overthis productive and richfishing area,” he said.

Hicap also said thatthe government seems“engaged in an anti-Chinascare campaign to justifythe near future deploymentof US troops in West Phil-ippine Sea at the expenseof Filipino people.”

He lamented reportsthat foreign affairs and fish-ery officials have been ad-vising fishermen not to getnear Scarborough Shoalpurportedly for their ownsafety and to avoid esca-lation of the current ten-sion between Chinese andFilipino military naval forc-es in the area.

Two weeks ago, Pam-alakaya had filed a “diplo-matic protest” against Chi-na “for employing dirty pol-itics, sheer arrogance andpolitical bullying against thePhilippines over the Scar-borough Shoal issue.”

In a protest letter ad-dressed to China’s envoy tothe Philippines Ambassa-

dor Ma Keqiing, the militantgroup condemned “the per-petual arrogance and polit-ical bullying of China de-spite repeated calls fromthe Filipino people to easethe political tension.”

“Madam Ambassador, the display of Chinese mil-itary might in ScarboroughShoal and the scene scar-ing small Filipino fisherfolksourcing their livelihoodfrom the productive fishingarea through the use ofbattle ready warships andpsywar flying aircrafts issomething that we cannotstomach and accept,”said Pamalakaya in itsprotest letter.

It said “the Filipinofisherfolk join the entirenation in asserting the peo-ple’s sovereign rights onScarborough Shoal andparts of the Spratly regimeof island belong to thePhilippine territory.”

Winning, whining“NEVER FORGET that our country dependson you to help protect our freedom, ourdemocracy and our way of life.”

So US President Barack Obama remindedthe media at last Saturday’s White HouseCorrespondents Dinner.

This, as he paid tribute to The New YorkTimes’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin ofthe Sunday Times of London who died whilecovering the uprising in Syria.

“Walang makakaangat, kasi lahat silanaghahatakan pababa.

So President Benigno Aquino III damnedthe Philippine media to the level of crabs intheir reportage.

Pure whining there.

The nobilityof labor

“AND INASMUCH as most good things are produced by labor, itfollows that all such things of right belong to those whose laborhas produced them. But it has so happened in all the ages of theworld, that some have labored, and others have, without labor, enjoyed a large proportion of the fruits. This is wrong and shouldnot continue. To secure to each laborer the whole product of hislabor, or as nearly as possible, is a most worthy object of any goodgovernment.”

Itaas ang sahod. Ibaba ang presyo!“Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only

the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not firstexisted. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much thehigher consideration. Capital has its rights, which are as worthy ofprotection as any other rights…A few men own capital, and thatfew avoid labor themselves.”

‘These capitalists generally act harmoniously, and in concert, to fleece the people.”

NO. The English passages quoted above werenot lifted from the pages of Das Kapital or theCommunist Manifesto. Nor did they come fromthe fiery writings of Engels or the incendiaryspeeches of Lenin.

Would you believe, those were the very wordsof Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of theUnited States of America, the very bulwark ofcapitalism in the world?

Born poor, self-taught and an itinerant workerbefore he turned politician, Lincoln was so inuredin the nobility of labor that it became one greatpillar of his presidency.

“No men living are more worthy to be trustedthan those who toil up from poverty, none lessinclined to take or touch aught which they havenot honestly earned. Let them beware ofsurrendering a political power which they alreadypossess.”

Lincoln’s biographer, the poet Carl Sandburg,

called that passage from the President’s annualmessage to Congress on December 3, 1861 as:“An extraordinary little treatise on what Lincolnconsidered the basic point of the Americaneconomic and political system…A rough-hewnsketch of American society, placing the farmerand the laborer as the living and controllingelements in a government of the people.”

The emancipation of the slaves that precipitatedthe American Civil War and caused the holocaust, and eventual apotheosis of Lincoln, was more thanan issue of race. It was also a labor issue: slavelabor.

By breaking the chains of slavery, the GreatEmancipator, freed the Blacks from indenturedlabor, and elevated them to their full humanity.

Laboro, ergo sum. I labor, therefore I am. Avariation on a theme of the philosopher ReneDescartes. A pick on the Christian ethos that laborennobles the man.

So what makes the only Christian nation inAsia then, with less than 10 percent of itspopulation having all – without labor, and morethan 90 percent having none – but with all thelabors?

A noble country?Isulong ang pakikibaka tungo sa kalayaan at

karangalan ng manggagawang Pilipino! Mabuhayang uring anak pawis!

ON THIS DAY in 1945, holed upin a bunker under his headquar-ters in Berlin, Adolf Hitler com-mits suicide by swallowing acyanide capsule and shootinghimself in the head. Soon after,Germany unconditionally surren-dered to the Allied forces, end-ing Hitler's dreams of a "1,000-year" Reich.

Since at least 1943, it wasbecoming increasingly clear thatGermany would fold under thepressure of the Allied forces. InFebruary of that year, the Ger-man 6th Army, lured deep intothe Soviet Union, was annihilat-ed at the Battle of Stalingrad, and German hopes for a sus-tained offensive on both frontsevaporated. Then, in June 1944,the Western Allied armies land-ed at Normandy, France, andbegan systematically to pushthe Germans back toward Ber-lin. By July 1944, several Ger-

man military commanders ac-knowledged their imminent de-feat and plotted to remove Hitlerfrom power so as to negotiate amore favorable peace. Their at-tempts to assassinate Hitlerfailed, however, and in his repris-als, Hitler executed over 4,000fellow countrymen.

In January 1945, facing asiege of Berlin by the Soviets,Hitler withdrew to his bunker tolive out his final days. Located55 feet under the chancellery, the shelter contained 18 roomsand was fully self-sufficient, withits own water and electrical sup-ply. Though he was growing in-creasingly mad, Hitler continuedto give orders and meet withsuch close subordinates as Her-mann Goering, Heinrich Himmlerand Josef Goebbels. He alsomarried his long-time mistressEva Braun just two days beforehis suicide.

In his last will and testament,Hitler appointed Admiral KarlDonitz as head of state andGoebbels as chancellor. He thenretired to his private quarterswith Braun, where he and Braunpoisoned themselves and theirdogs, before Hitler then alsoshot himself with his service pis-tol.

Hitler and Braun's bodies werehastily cremated in the chancel-lery garden, as Soviet forcesclosed in on the building. Whenthe Soviets reached the chancel-lery, they removed Hitler's ash-es, continually changing their lo-cation so as to prevent Hitler dev-otees from creating a memorialat his final resting place. Onlyeight days later, on May 8, 1945,the German forces issued anunconditional surrender, leavingGermany to be carved up by thefour Allied powers.

Before they get out they’ll be pulled in.” Walangmakakaangat, kasi lahat sila naghahatakan pababa.

PuntongBulacan

Dino Balabo

Sa kaalaman ng marami, may tatlong paraan

kaming ginagamit noon maramihang paghuli ngtalangka.

“Ang sa akin po, I guess I’m just going with the flow. At you deal with it as you go through it. So, sa akinpo, in time siguro,” mahabang say ng aktor.

So, I’d rather keep it to myself.“In time siguro, malalaman naman natin, hindi naman tayo bumabata. I remember being asked the same question

before, so, I guess, oras na lang ang magbibigay ng sagot sa katanungan,” pahayag pa ni Piolo. So there!

ang Mother’s Day presentation, the horror comedy “The Mommy Returns?” Ayon sa kanya, this is now water under the bridge and Annabelle is even amused when she sees Pokwangimpersonating her on the set of “The Mommy Returns.”

If you won’t look at her and just listen to her talk, aakalain mo talaga si Mommy ang nagsasalita.

Aside from Pokwang, another actress in the cast also had a tiff with Annabelle, Gloria Diaz. It’s just a simple case of misunderstanding. Alam ni Mommy that I enjoy working with Tita Gloria kasishe’s full of words of wisdom about love, life and men.

“He’s my leading man in the only movie I did directedby the great Lino Brocka, ‘Makiusap Ka sa Diyos’, for which I got nominated as best actress. I played a good girl who wantsto be a nun at siya yung devil who tempted me.”

Maihahatid angnangyayaring balita sa entertainment world .

No wonder, maraming nakakaaway itong si Annabelle.Piolo Pascual
