Summer Book Club

The book for July is "Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial" by Bro. Guy Consolmagno, S.J. & Fr. Paul Mueller, S.J. Please consider picking up this book and joining in a common learning experience with others in our parish - there are a couple of copies in our parish library in the Parish Hall.

We will have opportunities to discuss the book on Wednesday, July 26 at 7pm with wine and cheese and on Sunday, July30 at 9am with coffee and pastries - or you can join the conversation online at https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/221878-st-raymond-2017-summer-book-club

More on the book: Subtitled “and Other Questions from the Astronomers’ In-Box at the Vatican Observatory”, this book considers a variety of questions at the crossroads of faith and reason. Written in the form of a dialogue between the authors, it demonstrates the Catholic understanding that faith and science can be held together with integrity. This book “will make you laugh, make you think, and make you reflect more deeply on science, faith, and the nature of the universe.” (from the publisher)

Help Needed: As you may have noticed, we are doing some remodeling and reorganization in the Parish Center this summer to better accommodate our growing programs in the Fall. We could use some strong hands for moving things, assembling

furniture, and setting up rooms. We also need some folks who would be interested in sorting art and office supplies and cataloguing resources. We can fit projects to your schedule - a half hour to a couple of hours. If you have any time in the next couple of weeks, let the office know. Expect friendly companions and cookies!

YOU are invited to join St. Raymond Parish’s NEW Belonging Ministry!

Meditation on Today’s Readings

We all labor and are burdened, we all long for rest. How do we find peace and rest? We come to Christ, we learn from him, imitate him. When we take his yoke upon us, he guides us and keeps us on the right road. All other paths are ultimately more difficult and lead to dead ends. When we hear that he is meek and humble of heart, we follow his example as his children. From him we learn of the Father and we rejoice. The true King has come, meek, and riding on an ass. His kingdom is universal, to the ends of the earth. Let us give thanks at all times and praise his name.

As a parish community we pray for the sick among us: Lynn Bacon, Roger Barth, Kayte Roach, James Roach, Bernice D’Arcy, Margaret McSweeney, Dennis McSweeney, Javier Ramos, Juan Esteban Gonzalez Marin, Karen Lundberg, Catherine Matsakis, Rufina Villalobos, Diane Mojtehedi, Dennis Warner, and Margaret Alivero.

HOMELESS FAMILY FUND

Pastor David Shearin and his wife Shawn from Street Life Ministries asked if we would partner with Peninsula Covenant Church to assist a 68-year old homeless woman who has been on the streets for at least three years. They have been helping her find different places to spend the night and now have found her a room in a boarding house for $700 per month including meals. She had enough saved for the first month's rent, but needed $1,400 for the last month and security deposit. PCC provided $700 and we were happy to partner with them and provide the other $700.

The client was a real estate broker for many years but retired early due to poor health. She receives $1,100 per month in social security benefits and Pastor David is confident she can stick to a budget and maintain her rent payments with no problem. She was profoundly grateful and said she hopes to spend her last days in her new place. Thank you for your generous contributions which allowed us to help her and also Pastor David who does such wonderful work with and for the homeless. Your compassion for those in need in our community is a blessing for all.

"...And, be kind to one another, compassionate…." -Ephesians 5:32

Please make your donations payable to St. Raymond Homeless Family Fund. They may be placed in the collection basket, sent to the parish office or through the St. Raymond website (e-contributions).

GOOD NEWS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS FAMILIES!

We are excited to communicate that the parishes in the area are starting a new program for individuals in the Autism Spectrum Disorder and Special Needs at St. Charles Parish in San Carlos. We are currently looking for your cooperation on spreading the word to family members or friends/families whom you know who cope with someone in the Special Needs Family and Autism Spectrum.

We will start our program September, 2017, and, therefore, we would like you to join us as soon as possible. If you know a family or friends with a special needs child/young adult, let them know about this opportunity. Then we can start working on the necessary accommodations that we may need to consider (physical, speech, sensory issues, etc).

Our goal is not only to offer preparation for First Communion and Confirmation, but also to provide modified services that help the person with Special Needs to participate in Mass and the Sacraments.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to Ana Uribe-Ruiz [email protected] or Monica Miller at [email protected]. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

VATICAN YOUTH SURVEY In October 2018 the Synod of Bishops will gather to discuss "Young people, faith and vocational discernment". To involve young people in preparations, the Vatican has released an online questionnaire to better understand the lives, attitudes and concerns of 16- to 29-year-olds around the world.

The questionnaire — available in English, Spanish, French and Italian — can be found on the synod's official site: youth.synod2018.va/content/synod2018/it.html and is open to any young person, regardless of faith or religious belief. The answers to the questionnaire, along with contributions from bishops, bishops' conferences and other church bodies, "will provide the basis for the drafting of the 'instrumentum laboris,'" or working document for the assembly, synod officials said in January.

Young people from all backgrounds are encouraged to take part in the questionnaire because every young person has "the right to be accompanied without exclusion," synod officials had said. Please consider sharing this information with young adults you know - and perhaps to use it as a basis for conversation in your family and community.

POPE'S MESSAGE This past month marked the second anniversary of Pope Francis's second encyclical, entitled Laudato Si, on the care for our common home.

The Global Catholic Climate Movement, an international network of 400-plus Catholic religious communities, educational institutions, dioceses and other organizations, is seeking to mark this anniversary by recruiting Catholics to keep its message alive and animated in their daily lives, in particular around the issue of climate change.

The Laudato Si’ Pledge, created by the Global Catholic Climate Movement, seeks to rededicate Catholics to Francis' calls in the first papal encyclical on the environment and human ecology for all to do their part in protecting God's creation.

The campaign has set a goal of mobilizing 1 million Catholics worldwide to commit to take steps like reducing energy use and adopting clean energy, and to push for such measures within their communities and countries. Individuals, families, parishes and organizations can sign the pledge, which is currently available in four languages.

The pledge, accessible at LiveLaudatoSi.org, reads: "Answering Pope Francis' urgent call in Laudato Si', I pledge to: Pray for and with creation; Live more simply; Advocate to protect our common home."

"Pope Francis helped transform the climate debate by reframing it as a moral issue. Now is the turn for the Church to 'walk the walk' and bring the encyclical's message to life," said Tomas Insua, executive director of Global Catholic Climate Movement, in a statement.

If you haven’t yet read the encyclical, you can access it at: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html
