THE PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace to you and peace. Happy Easter! That’s the last time I’ll get to say that this year. Our Easter season draws to a close today as we celebrate the great feast of the Holy Spirit called Pentecost. It’s often said that Pentecost is the “birthday” of the Church. Up until now in our Scriptures, in the salvation story we’ve relived in our liturgy since Christmas, the Church has existed only in a kind of embryonic or fetal form. It’s clear from the inconsistent behavior of the disciples during Jesus’ ministry and their disintegration when He was arrested and killed that, without some intervention on God’s part, there would be no Church to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. We too can experience inconsistency and disintegration in our lives and in the life of the Church. Yet the need to spread the good news remains. In light of this, we can appreciate the importance and necessity of Pentecost, this “birthday” of the Church. It is a time to recall not only events from the past, but the continuing and powerful reality that God’s Spirit moves us even now. The Spirit moves us to imitate Jesus, who said that he came to serve, not to be served. So we are called to serve. We are called to serve the mission of Jesus and his Church by drawing others into friendship with Christ by bringing his Good News to all people—in every tongue and nation. When is the last time you took just a little time to think about why you go to church, why you receive Communion, why you pray, why Jesus or the Bible or anything Christian matters to you at all? If you find these things meaningful, when’s the last time you shared that with someone? You don’t have to cross an ocean and learn a new language to be a missionary. “Every tongue and nation,” the Scriptures say. That includes the language you already speak, the place you already are: here and now, inside the doors of your own home with family and friends, and outside them, too, in the city where we live. So many people hunger for faith, hope, and love. Who might be in your life right now, just waiting for you to share yours? Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord! Fr. Christopher, O.P.

A Case Manager at Haven Family House asked us to partner with some other agencies to assist a single 45-year old veteran with three children, two sons aged 15 and 21 and a 19-year old daughter. They had been homeless since last September when a fire destroyed their apartment building and they lost most of their possessions. They lived in their car for three months and then moved into the shelter when space became available. They found a three-bedroom house to rent for $3,700 per month. The Veteran's HUD will pay $2,400 per month so their share is only $1,300, which they can afford. The father has started working part time as a care-giver and earns $375 per month. He also receives $3,850 per month in veteran's disability compensation. The children are in school but plan to get part-time jobs to help with the family income. Our share of the assistance was $1,000. They were happy to be able to move out of the shelter and thank all parties for the assistance they received. They plan to continue to budget carefully and hopefully increase their earnings. Thank you for sharing with the Lord's people who were in need. "Share with the Lord's people who are in need."

+ Meditation on Today’s Readings

Faith is a gift. In many of the resurrection appearances, the disciples do not recognize the Risen Jesus right away, but only after he calls them. “No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.” This same Spirit overflows within us in a variety of gifts. Each of us is granted unique gifts and a unique call. But these gifts do not separate us but rather gather us together in the One Body. These gifts may appear ordinary to us, but each is precious and can be a great help to others even if we are not aware of it. May God grant that each of us may use our gifts humbly and generously for the glory of God and the good of our neighbors.

Fun Fact Over the last school year, the St. Raymond School

Mother’s Club raised $519,000 to support numerous school programs.

Miss Charlene Mason sang “I Will Not Pass This Way Again,” giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

Sacristan Needed “There prepare for us" (Mark 14:15). Jesus called his disciples to prepare a room for the Last Supper--the first celebration of Mass. Our parish St. Raymond needs a leader for Mass preparation. Called "Sacristan," this is a part-time, paid

position at the heart of our community, making the celebration of Mass possible. Training is of course available. The Sacristan leads set-up and clean-up for the 8:15 am daily Mass (with days off); for the Saturday 5:15 pm Vigil Mass; for Sunday Masses at 8 am, 10 am, and 6 pm (in short, all weekend Masses); and for all Masses on Holy Days of Obligation, Ash Wednesday, and the Triduum. Additional duties include: set-up and clean-up for funerals, baptisms, weddings, and Masses for special occasions; training volunteers for sacristy-related tasks, such as Mass set-up for weekdays when absent, polishing brass, and tidying pews; maintaining an adequate supply of sacristy-related items such as altar bread, wine, candles, charcoal, incense, etc., timely ordering of seasonal items such as palms, ashes, and the Paschal candle; and maintaining, polishing and cleaning all liturgical items. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact Fr. Christopher at 650-323-1755 or [email protected]. Thank you!

MISSION STATEMENT

St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The Sacred Scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given us.

THE DOMINICAN CORNER On Thursday, May 19th we celebrate St. Francisco Coll y Guitart. "He was born on May 18, 1812 in the small village of Gombreny, in the Diocese of Vic, Catalonia, Spain. In 1835 religious orders in Spain were forcibly suppressed and Friar Francisco Coll, was obliged to abandon his convent and become a secularized Dominican. He was nevertheless ordained a priest on 28 May 1836 despite the risks involved. Indeed, in

spite of being unable because of the new anti-clerical laws to live in his convent or to wear his habit, he remained a Dominican all his life in all that he was and all that he did. Soon after his ordination Francisco offered his services to his Bishop and for 40 years exercised his ministry as an itinerant missionary in the parishes of northeast Spain. Impelled by an irresistible force, he started to preach as a new apostle, "the apostle of modern times". Like the Founder of his Order, he received no stipend nor would he accept donations; he was a preacher of popular missions. He prayed for long hours, studied and dedicated a great deal of time to preparing sermons for preaching the missions. With his friend, St. Anthony Mary Claret, he founded the "Apostolic Fellowship" for evangelization in 1846. He preached to cloistered nuns and prisoners, visited the sick and imparted catechesis to children, always encouraging the devotion to the Virgin Mary. Fr. Francisco Coll y Guitart lost his sight and then his mental faculties and was cared for by the nuns of his Congregation. He died in Vic on 2 April 1875 at the age of 62."

-From the Vatican website On Saturday, May 21st we also celebrate Bl. Hyacinth Marie Cormier, 76th Master General of the Dominican Order. "Henry Cormier was born in Orleans on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1832. All his life he treasured the thought that he had been born on Our Lady's day, and therefore he should be especially devoted to her. Henry was ordained for the Diocese of Orleans in 1856. He went to Flavigny, where Father Lacordaire had opened a novitiate of the Order, and begged to be admitted. He was accepted, a little dubiously as he looked so delicate, and given the name Hyacinth. The master general, Father Jandel, took him to Rome as secretary and asked the pope for a special dispensation to allow him to make profession. He fell seriously ill and was anointed. In the belief that he

was going to die in a few days, he was finally allowed to make his profession. But at this point he recovered, and he served the Order vigorously for fifty years. Teaching and writing should have kept him busy; but he also was regular confessor to eight large convents and extraordinary confessor to several more. In spite of all the activity, he spent hours every day in front of the Blessed Sacrament. He had a universal reputation for the soundness of his spiritual direction. As gentle as a child in his manner, but as inflexible as a Gibraltar in a matter of principle, he quietly demonstrated the policies that he wanted followed in the Order. He was elected Master General in 1904. He founded the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas ("Angelicum), the international house of studies at Rome, and supported other educational projects of the Order. He founded the Western Dominican Province, which is the Province of Dominicans in California, in 1912. Father Cormier died in Rome in 1916."
