The man’s acoustic guitar and heartfelt

environmentally-friendly love songs are the perfect

way to usher in the new summer season. Although it’s

not an outside venue, it’s sure to be a relaxing set of

new hits and old classics from the musician. And 100%

of tour profits go to charity.

Subtracts battering rhythms, militant aesthetics and

belligerent riffing that have long been their hallmarks

and have been unleashed in the greatest realisation

of their sonic vision to date. They’re set to tear the

roof off the Dux Live to celebrate the new album.

Lovers of hard rock rejoice! The Melvins are playing

their own headline show in celebration of their 30

year anniversary. The Melvins’ 19th studio album

Tres Cabrones sees a reunion with original drummer

Mike Dillard and front man Buzz Osborne says the

new album is as close to their 1983 line-up as it can

possibly get.

Delong exploded into the cultural space last year

with his game changing debut album Just Movement,

His live show is an impressive display of sheer talent

and creativity that promises to be one of the most

intriguing performances this year.

Releasing their first single in 2012, the Melbourne-

based four-piece followed that up with their first EP

and toured extensively across both the North and the

South islands of New Zealand. It didn’t take long for

promoters to notice the capacity this band had for

pulling crowds.

The first ever Auckland Ska Festival is on its way. The

Kings Arms tavern has an insane line-up of 11 bands,

who will alternate between two stages for a night of

non-stop skanking. The finest acts New Zealand has to

offer will be performing a variety of your favorite ska

styles from Jamaican roots, through to two-tone ska.

The Australian soft rock duo has endured four

decades together as friends and band mates. Eight

global hits and more than 40 million albums sold,

composer Graham Russell and vocalist Russell

Hitchcock are 1980s icons. They’ve captivated

audiences as an opening act and their own headline

shows. Relive the great memories for power ballads.

Fat Freddy’s Drop is primed to present the Blackbird

Summer Detour, escaping along local highways and

byways to bring the live music experience home to

New Zealand. Starting in Canterbury before heading

north, the concerts promise new material and beats.

He is the electric southern slide guitar slam-stomper

from hell. Internationally notorious for his incredible

live performances, involving getting folks naked and

crowd surfing in an inflatable dingy, be mesmerised,

pulverised and scotched by the king of his thing – Mr

Bob Log the Third!

Every year, the MUZAI Records crew come together,

fire up a BBQ and end up getting into the festival

spirit. What began as a quiet, in-house gathering has

turned into a live music show! It’s basically their way

to say thanks to everyone for their support and here’s

to another year.

In late November and early December Fuyuko’s

Fables, Groeni and Pales are embarking on a tour

throughout New Zealand. This tour is to celebrate

releases from all three groups and the set list will

include the debut album from Pales, a follow up EP

from Groeni.

Street Chant has grown over the last few years to

become a recognisable name in guitar pop. Born from

a grunge background in their early years, their hits

caught people’s attention and they got a rep as a top

live band. Joined by with Mermaidens, Team Ugly and

Gains at various stops on their New Zealand tour.

Since 2009, Dying of The Light have forged theirown path. Through a dedicated regime of rehearsal,

experimentation, refinement and live performance

they have become a potent power duo. This month

sees the release of EP Monolithium , containing three

original tunes and a blistering dark cover.

Seiji (Guitar Wolf) wrote the album after some

business on Mt Fuji involving wormholes, space

battleships and a secret laboratory. Guitar Wolf

demand that you stop staring at your mobile

phone waiting for something to happen and be the

happening.

SANTA CLAUSFATHER OF CHRISTMAS

CULTURE

As the year draws to a close, Unitec is throwing open

its doors to bring you the brightest, boldest and most

exciting student work that’s been simmering beneath

the surface. From acting to architecture, Grad Fest

2013 is the culmination of many hours of dedication,

practice and passion.

The Mighty Mighty Market is held on the first

Saturday of every month. Celebrating shopping and

drinking, enjoy the crafty and collectible delights the

capital has to offer from vintage clothing, accessories

and jewellery to art, craft, records and more. Cash

only onsite.

Top Dog reveals the sculpture’s unparalleled eye for

capturing movement of working dogs. Caught in mid-

leap with tongue and tail flapping, the huntaway is

full of the joys of life and the startled ewe provides

the perfect foil for his energy. Made from corrugated

iron, pieces of old woolshed and hay, the materials

perfectly blend with the subject.

The carols are beginning to play in malls, the lights

and decorations are being draped down the main

streets and the Santa Parade has been and gone.

Christmas is on its way and there’s nothing we can

do, so embrace it! Santa arrives at 7pm, then relax

and listen to the live entertainment before the tree

lights up.

The name says it all really: Now entering its third

year, the festival has quickly established itself as one

of the leading wine and food events in the country,

and is again preparing to host wineries from across

the South Island. Also features entertainment and

cooking classes.

Without the restrictions of the TV cameras and the

censors, the 7 Days team lay into the ridiculousness

of current affairs, the newsmakers and each other

before your eyes. Be there to catch what happens

when the cameras are off.

Don’t be put off by Enough Said beingdescribed as a romantic comedy. Free

of most clichés of its genre, this is

more a slow-burning adult drama full

of chuckles derived from well-writtencharacters and top-notch acting than

the lesser fare we’ve seen in recent

times as rom-coms have run out of

steam. It is more Your Sister’s Sister or

(while not a rom-com itself) Blue

 Jasminethan Friends With Benefits ,

thanks to a deft blend of smarts,

laughs and a rock-solid emotional

core.

Anchored by seemingly effortless,

understated, and therefore

tremendously impressive

performances from leads Julia Louis-

Dreyfus (who’s perhaps never been

a better actress) and the tragically

departed James Gandolfini, EnoughSaid moves at a measured pace as

the pair romantically entangle. Such

is the uncommon subtlety and true-

to-life honesty with which these

two divorced parents begin to fall

for each other that the film had

me wondering whether it was a

rom-com at all – until, hey presto,

along comes a plot contrivance

and one character keeping secretsfrom another that earn Enough

Said its rom-com stripes without

stretching credulity any further

than it needs to.

Aside from the strong chemistry

shared by Louis-Dreyfus and

Gandolfini, propelling their

flirty banter that delivers most

of the film’s laughs, strong

relationships exist elsewhere,

thanks to characters who defy

usual commonly-seen clichés

of supporting roles. Friends,

daughters, partners – they’re all

developed into characters who

deserve their screen time, and youfeel for Louis-Dreyfus each time

she dents the bonds she shares

with them. A class act all round.

ENOUGH SAID

FILM OF THE WEEK

ON SCREEN

Steve Coogan’s creation, broadcaster Alan Partridge,

makes it to the big screen. Partridge’s career decline

has taken him to a regional radio station, where he

hosts a mid-morning show of soft rock and talkback.

When a fellow DJ turns up to work with a shotgun

after being made redundant by new owners, Partridge

finds himself the main go-between in the ensuing

hostage crisis.

After the disastrous food storm in that film, scientist

Flint (Hader) and his friends are forced to leave their

SHIT WORTH EATING

Al Brown’s New York-style deli is a place like no other in the city.

When you first walk in, it’s like going into a movie set – waitress in

1950’s waitress attire, intimate booths, an open-plan kitchen area

and seats at the bar so you can watch the food being made before

your eyes. Inspired by the old school way, the meals are based around

slow-cooked meats (think beef sandwiches with sauerkraut), or

salads packed full of seeds, grains and delicious cheeses. Wrap your

tastebuds around true-to-form Canadian cuisine of “Poutine” (chips

and gravy), and wash it all down with a bottomless cup of coffee

(filter, keeping it real to the style).

ENCORE

PUNK, NOISE, POST-ROCK, grunge and sludge are all terms that

have been used to describe Canadian trio METZ. Each genre can be

heard in varying degrees through their music, and many a music critic

have drawn comparisons between the trio and a handful of early 90’s

alternative bands such as Melvins, Mudhoney and Pixies.

Speaking with drummer Hayden Menzies, he explains that thecomparisons are very “flattering”, though points out their sound is just

as valid in 2013.

“We’re all in our 30’s and those bands were a big influence on all of us

growing up. But with us trying to replicate anything, or us trying to

formulate anything from another era - we don’t write songs with the

intention of sounding like the 90’s.”

“We like to think we’re writing contemporary music that’s maybe

reminiscent of something, but it’s still relevant to 2013.”

The three men of METZ -guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins, bassist

Chris Slorach and drummer Menzies - have been playing live since 2010

after meeting in Toronto, Canada. After solidifying themselves as a

reputable live act, METZ began work on a record aimed at capturing theessence of their live show.

“There was a bit of an accepted challenge in translating what we did live

to the record, so we really wanted to take our time to figure out how we

could do that in the studio and just have fun with it, and not really feel

any pressure or any deadlines,” says the drummer.

Translating the brutality and precision was a large task, and an unlikely

duo in Graham Walsh (from electronic band Holy Fuck) as producer

and Alex Bonenfant (whose production credits include Crystal Castles)

as mixer, were enlisted to help. Both urged METZ to create something a

little different in the mix, Menzies explains.

“Graham from Holy Fuck came to us when he was getting more and

more into recording. And we just saw it as a great opportunity to geteven more ideas, ya know, with them coming from more of a different

approach musically. We just saw it as an opportunity to explore different

stuff and not just put out a conventional rock record.”

Just one listen of the album will shatter any impressions of a

conventional rock record. It’s straight up loud and pummels with an

anxious ferocity. The guitars screech in primal anger and the vocals are

fuzzed out and smeared across the gnawing, frantic pulse of the drums

and bass. It’s a bizarre wavelength owing a debt to white, hot chaos.

Released in October 2012 through iconic Seattle music label Sub Pop,

the album quickly met applause from Pitchfork, and was recently

shortlisted for the Canadian Polaris Music Prize.

Since the release the trio have been on tour without pause, and when

queried over the high energy demands of performing such material

every night, Menzies shares that the band are able to push through any

 barriers through perseverance and sobriety.

“It’s not without its challenges. It can be tough, and we do get tired. But

we don’t party or anything [and] we’re all in it for the same reasons, [so]

as long as we keep playing as much as we can, then it’ll keep us going for

quite a while.”

The New Zealand leg of the tour on the 12th and 13th of December will be

their first visit down under and aside from the plane ride over, the trio

are very excited.

Fans attending the shows could well hear new material, as the power-house drummer reveals work on the follow-up album has already begun.

“We’ve already started writing the new record so as soon as we get back

from this tour we’ll go into the rehearsal space and shove out our ideas

and hopefully have the new record out within the next 8 months or so,”

states the drummer.

Menzies describes the new material as “an extension” of their debut with

“new approaches in there”, and is confident in their ability to develop

and grow as a band.

“We don’t want to write the same stuff over and over. It definitely has

our ‘stamp’, or whatever you wanna call it, but other than that it’s just us

 becoming better song writers.”
