Charmingly playful and very insightful, Sam is a

shining singer/songwriter based in central Auckland.

Already in his third year at the Popular Music

programme at Auckland University, he holds an

obsessive passion for music. His musical journey

started in the similar way of many talented young

performers, at 13 years of age, playing quietly in his

    bedroom.

Katchare are nally back in Aotearoa after successful

tours of Europe, UK and USA in 2013. The Best So Far

tour celebrates the new best of album from the seven-

piece Hamilton band and includes songs from all four

of their studio albums to date. Its been a busy time,

but theyre keen to showcase their hits.

Salad Boys and Christian Rock will be touring

together this August in association with

Christchurchs independent record label Melted Ice

Cream. They are celebrating the release of a split

cassette EP featuring 11 minutes of unheard music

from each of the two bands.

Join We Stole The Sun, Geoff Ong and Page28 for

a pure night of organic New Zealand music. Great

things come in twos, including Emily and Sam!

Together they make We Stole the Sun, a folk-pop duo

with a unique sound, which combines Emilys jazz-

scatting, fun-loving character with Sams somewhat

melancholic nature and excessive facial hair.

Much has happened in the 18 months since the

release of Great Norths debut album Newfoundland.

One guitarist joined a modestly successful pop band,

their drummer cut his head open on a piece of coral in

Hawaii, then left the band. Frontman and songwriter

Hayden Donnell trumped them both by marrying his

    partner and bassist Rachel Donnell.

The band make their return to the SFBH in ne

fashion, anked by some of Wellingtons outstanding

local talents. Theres Newtown Rocksteady, a dance

band that performs with its soul on its sleeve. Earfood

islegit late 60s era funk, while Miles Caulder & the

Rumours meld energetic country with heartfelt folk.

Then theres Russell Self to round out the night.

Johnny & The Felchers are necrophiliac skate punks,

channeling the primitive sounds of the late 1970s and

also the early 1980s. They play dirty graveyard old-

school punk in the style of Californian bands Fear and

Circle Jerks. Connected to the Lorne Street pad, they

have released a demo-tape on DIY label Zero Style run

    by drummer Johnny Zero.

Sheep, Dog & Wolf is releasing his rst full-length

album, Egospect, through Lil Chief Records just

over a week before he leaves on his European tour.

Hence the live shows in Auckland and Wellington for

the release and to say goodbye! Support from Race

Banyon (Wlg), Career Girls (Akl), and Foxtrot (Wlg & Akl).

Left Or Right are on a mission of fusing psychedelia

and blues roots in amongst buzzy songs and Richter-

ticking jams. Their live performance is sonic with

songwriting being the main focus. This winter LOR

will blitz six cities over three weekends, playing tracks

from both albums Buzzyand Nuggety, plus road

testing some new material for fans.

Theyre going to be playing covers at the Empire this

Saturday for you all to enjoy! This means the chance

to hear some of your favourite songs jammed by the

band! So dancing shoes are required. The group just

likes to have a good time and party it up, to see the

crowds enjoying popular tracks everyone loves.

Jeff Buckley is right at the top of my

list, but Im not sure who his back-up

    musicians would be.

    Whats an upcoming flm youre

    jazzed about?

Keen to see what Sir Peter has lined

up for the second installment of The

Hobbit - even though I still wish theyd

just done it as a single movie...

Where can your stalkers fnd you

    during the weekend?

At a yoga class, or chilling at home.

What happens when you mix Coca

    Cola with Pepsi?

Ugh!! A major headache, Id say!

    ARTIST Q&A

    Your signature Im an amazing

    cook dish is

Nice and simple - mushroom risotto.

The best TV show around at the

Youd get arrested i the police

    knew that you

Auckland Roller Derby has had a cracker season

so far. The women in blue and white have beaten

teams from Christchurch and Palmerston North, and

fought valiantly against the victorious Victorians

    Writer/director Neill Blomkamps2009 eature debut District 9

received a lot o acclaim or being

a sci-f action thriller with strong

    political undercurrents. The initial

    word on his greatly anticipated

    follow-up Elysium has been that

the sci- and action elements are

    present, but the metaphorical power

is lacking. In this reviewers opinion,

it wasnt the allegorical aspects that

made District 9 sing, it was the fact

that you cared about the characters.

Thats all fan boys want in their crazy-

ass movies to care. This aspect of

    Blomkamps lmmaking prowess is

    very present in Elysium.

    The allegorical aspects are also

    present building on observations

about the 1% versus the rest of us

    and concerns about availability

to health care. But Elysium works

    because Blomkamp makes sure

    you care about the protagonists

and their fate its all too rare an

    achievement in genre cinema.

The kick-ass action and brain-ticklingfuture tech doesnt hurt either

there is no director working today

who has a better grasp of sci-

    action, including James Cameron.

    Blomkamp is also unmatched in

infusing his sci- settings with grit

and wear the tagging and spray

    paint on everything here rings

    particularly true. The titular space

habitat in Elysium of course lacks

grit, but thats the point of the movie.

I was dazzled by every shot of the

    spinning torus style space station,

but I wouldve liked to have seen a

    little more of it.

Elysium doesnt quite build on thedazzling potential of District 9, but it

doesnt fail the previous lm either.

    Blomkamp has crafted another

    superior sci- action thriller that

    demands emotional investment I

felt every moment here, and I cant

wait to do so again, over and over.

    FILM OF ThE WEEK

    ON SCrEEN

Its yet another teenage sci- fantasy to be dubbed

the new Twilight, but with Phil Collins daughter

Lily at the helm we are hoping for better things than

pouty face. Set in New York, ordinary teen Clary

discovers she is the descendant of a secret cadre of

half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle.

Prime Rocks returns next week with Sound City, rock

superstarDave Grohls directorial debut! Sound City

focuses on the history of the legendary Californian

studio where artists such as Neil Young, Fleetwood

Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails,

Weezer, and countless others created classic records

    over the past 40 years.

After a gruesome and explosive ending to the comic

book adaptation, costumed vigilante Kick-Ass (Aaron

    Taylor-Johnson) returns alongside Chloe Grace

Moretzs Hit Girl as the pair deal with high-school life,

the emerging DIY superhero movement, and their

old nemesis Red Mist renamed The Mother F**ker

    (Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

The multi award-winning and critically acclaimed

hit comedy returns for an eighth instalment. Peep

Show follows the private world of Mark and Jeremy,

two atmates living in south London. Mark is the

conventional one seething with inner rages and

desires while Jeremy is the loose cannon full of

    expressed rages and desires.

Sorry, Joss Whedon doing Shakespeare? What will be see? Over-

the-top ghts (likely), feisty heroines (denitely) and a strange/

unidentiable plot twist (probably not). Alexis Denisof, betterknown as a star of Buffyand husband of How I Met Your Mothers

Alyson Hannigan, stars as Benedick. With set ideas about love, he

enters a war of words with the lady Beatrice. Its inevitable they will

fall in love: Didnt your mother always tell you the boy that teases

you just does it because he likes you? Oh yeah, and there is also a

scheming plot to ruin an empire, young lovers and a sword ght or

too. Its action-packed and whipped into a frenzy with Whedons

    contemporary spin on the classic.

    I IfyI, remembers singer/songwriter manda

Palmer (aka fP) about one ateul da in februar 2011. On the phone

rom ew Orleans, she notes, I was at the apier airport, which is

about the size o an outside toilet, with all the other passengers huddled

around this big V. Out on the tarmac the plane rom Christchurch had

just landed and the passengers were arriving in the terminal (oblivious)

to the news a massive earthquake that had just rocked their hometown.

    It was heartbreaking.

Ive just reminded her o that moment because Id ound her

bookmarked tweet when researching or this interview. t the time o

those quakes, I was ollowing Palmers last local solo tour adventures

via facebook and at the precise moment her comments were coming

through m oce was erupting with the news rom down south.

you heard it here rst, huh? she sas. I was actuall tweeting in a

car going awa rom the airport. M rst reaction was to get on a plane,

down and do some undrasing shows. But everone was like, o,

dont do that, theres no inrastructure or anthing. I couldnt pla i Id

wanted to not then. Had m ight had been an hour beore I could have

    landed into .well...

    rmageddon?

yes. you know the internet is so ast. It reall isnt just this big static

thing. Its the new town crier! I did go back to Christchurch with

he (Dresden) Dolls [the Brechtian punk cabaret duo she ounded

with Brian Viglione] last ear and I sorta expected everthing to just

be there, like the quake didnt bring it all down. I was amazed at all

    damage and rubble.

heres a couple o things ou should know about Palmer. One is that

she loves her ver loal ans, is totall interactive with them and relies

on them almost or her ver existence. he other is that she loves

being down under. Palmer views her relationship with her audience

as completel 360 degrees. his has alwas been the case, even rom

the earl Dresden Dolls shows in Boston. udience members came as

much to participate as to watch. he oten wore dramatic make-up andclothing that pushed their cabaret/theater aesthetic. Coordinated b

the bands he Dirt Business Brigade ans joined them on stage as stilt

walkers, living statues, re breathers, perorming artists o all kinds

the were an integral part o the shows.

s Palmer ventured out solo she used crowd sourcing even more

extensivel. Her latest album, Theatre is Evil, recorded with the rand

het Orchestra, was unded through a Kickstarter.com project,

raising over $1milliion. Mind ou, the return on investment was also

generous, with pledgees value-eligible options like decorated turntables,

crat gits, personal portrait sketches, art books and even a personal

appearance at their next undraiser, as well as the nal recorded product!

he album was recorded in Melbourne with Michael Mcuilken, Chad

aines, and Jherek Bischo, a brilliant band o reconnaissance hackswith musical super powers and producer/engineer John Congleton

whos worked with a zillion amazing people including t. Vincent,

    Modest Mouse, and Xiu Xiu.

I decided on Melbourne or two reasons, she explains. I wanted to get

awa rom the normal and Ive recorded in a log cabin beore. Its isolated

and there are no distractions, but I still wanted coee down the street

and nightlie and Melbourne has that.

lso Kiwis and ussies allow me to be me: this cr az chick that

breaks rules. It s a more tolerant socie t. I dont e el like m sstem

    isnt under ire.

Palmers reerring to a recent online attack o her call or local musicians

to join her band on stage, promising to pa in beer mone. he urorewas started b a an claimed she was exploiting talent or ree, an odd

comment given most fP ans, at least in this part o the world, would

amputate their necessaries to stand on stage with her.

you see, thats what I love about Kiwis. here much more

broadminded. Its a more relaxed thing. Just enjo the opportunit!

Perect sentiment I ask, reerring to one o stand out album tracks Do it

with a ockstar. Ha. yes thats a collision between the **ker and the

**kee! he general stereotpe o a rocker is a pastiche clich, parting

till dawn, but in the unromantic realit, we just head to the hotel room,

check emails, drink cocoa in our jammies. Mundane stu.

eall, manda. you will never be mundane.
