Memphis Grizzlies 2017‐18 Regular Season Game Notes 5
IT BEARS REPEATING… TEAM QUICK FACTS
Memphis is 11‐32 without Mike Conley in the lineup this season… Since Conley joined the Grizzlies as the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Memphis is 375‐313 (.545) with him in the lineup and 62‐109 (.363) when he is not.
The Grizzlies are just 3‐29 when shooting the same or a lower field goal percentage than their opponents. Memphis has the fourth‐best field goal percentage defense at home in the NBA, holding opponents to just 43.6 percent from the field at FedExForum this season. The Grizzlies rank fourth in the league in secondary assists (or “hockey assists”) at 3.3 per game… The three teams ahead of Memphis are the San Antonio Spurs (4.0) and two other
teams with head coaches from the Gregg Popovich coaching tree: the Golden State Warriors (4.9) and Philadelphia 76ers (3.7). The Grizzlies completed their four‐game Eastern Conference road trip with a 108‐82 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 6… Memphis, which lost all four games on the trip, remained
winless on the road this season against Eastern Conference teams (0‐8). Memphis won a season‐high five straight home games from Jan. 10‐22, its longest such streak since winning six straight at home from Dec. 1‐14, 2016. The Grizzlies made 10‐or‐more three‐pointers in five straight games (Jan. 15‐22), tying the franchise record of five set from Dec. 29, 2016‐Jan. 6, 2017… The Grizzlies averaged 11.0 threes
in this stretch, including a season‐high tying 15 treys on Jan. 20 at New Orleans… Memphis set a single‐quarter franchise record for threes made by hitting nine of its 14 attempts from beyond the arc in the third period on Jan. 20 at New Orleans.
Memphis is 11‐6 this season when making 20 free throws or more. Grizzlies opponents have paraded to the free throw line as of late… In Memphis’ last nine games (1‐8 record), opponents have shot 29.7 free throws compared to the Grizzlies’ 17.2
attempts (267‐155 total margin). Memphis had eight players reach double‐digit scoring in their win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 15 in the 16th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Game… It marked just
the third time in franchise history in which they could make that claim (others: April 2, 2008 vs. New York and March 16, 2003 vs. Atlanta). The Grizzlies have played in 13 one‐possession games, tied for the most in the NBA. With Ivan Rabb making his first career start Jan. 24 against San Antonio, the Grizzlies now have started 15 different players this season, more than any other NBA team except for the
Los Angeles Clippers (16). Memphis has recorded seven consecutive winning seasons and seven consecutive postseason appearances… Both are the third‐longest active streaks in the NBA.
TYREKE EVANS
Tyreke Evans has the second‐highest scoring average (19.4) ever by a player in his first season with the Grizzlies franchise (first: Zach Randolph, 20.1 in 2009‐10). Tyreke Evans started the season as one of the leading candidates for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award… In 19 games coming off the bench, Evans averaged 17.7 points, 5.1 rebounds
and 3.4 assists in 28.3 minutes… He scored 20‐or‐more points off the bench in six straight games from Nov. 1‐13, the longest such streak in franchise history. Since moving to the starting lineup, Tyreke Evans has averaged 20.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 33.1 minutes in 27 starts. Tyreke Evans recorded at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in three straight games (Dec. 23‐27), a career‐high and franchise‐record streak… Before Evans, only one other
player in Grizzlies history had ever strung together consecutive games with at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists: Pau Gasol from April 16‐18, 2007. Now in his ninth NBA season, Tyreke Evans is having his most efficient pro campaign to date… The 2009‐10 NBA Rookie of the Year is posting his highest scoring average since his rookie
season and averaging career highs for three‐pointers per game, three‐point field goal percentage, effective field goal percentage, true shooting percentage, assist‐to‐turnover ratio and offensive box plus‐minus.
Tyreke Evans is looking to become the first player in Grizzlies franchise history to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists over the course of a season. MARC GASOL
Marc Gasol once again has proven himself to be one of the most versatile players in the NBA… Gasol is one of just five players in the league with at least 50 three‐pointers, 50 offensive rebounds, 150 assists and 50 blocks (LeBron James, Draymond Green, DeMarcus Cousins, Al Horford).
Marc Gasol leads the team with 21 double‐doubles, including one triple‐double on Jan. 27 vs. LA Clippers, after recording 11 double‐doubles in 74 games last season… It is the fourth time Gasol has recorded at least 20 double‐doubles in a season… Gasol’s single‐season personal best is 28 double‐doubles, set during the 2009‐10 season… He has 21 of Memphis’ 34 double‐doubles as a team this season.
Marc Gasol passed Mike Conley as the Grizzlies’ all‐time franchise leader for points scored on Dec. 30 at Golden State and passed Conley as the team’s all‐time leader for minutes played on Jan. 29 vs. Phoenix.
Marc Gasol passed Mike Conley (23,358) as the franchise’s all‐time leader for minutes played on Jan. 29 vs. Phoenix. Marc Gasol reached 10,000 career points on Dec. 2 at Cleveland. Marc Gasol passed Zach Randolph (3,731) as the Grizzlies’ all‐time leader for field goals made on Nov. 29 at San Antonio.
DILLON BROOKS
Dillon Brooks was named to the 2018 Rising Stars Challenge as a member of the World team on Jan. 24… Brooks will participate in the Rising Stars Challenge on Feb. 16 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, as part of NBA All‐Star 2018… Brooks, the only second round pick to be selected as part of the World team and one of two second rounders (Milwaukee’s Malcolm Brogdon) in the game, is the first rookie to represent the Grizzlies in the event since Marc Gasol and O.J. Mayo in 2008‐09.
Selected with the 45th overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft, Dillon Brooks is the only player to appear in every Grizzlies game this season and is one of three rookies (Jayson Tatum, OG Anunoby) not to miss a single contest… Brooks is on pace to become the sixth rookie in franchise history to play an entire 82‐game slate… That list is comprised of Marc Gasol (2008‐09), O.J. Mayo (2008‐09), Juan Carlos Navarro (2007‐08), Pau Gasol (2001‐02) and Roy Rogers (1996‐97).
Dillon Brooks scored a career‐high 22 points on Jan. 19 vs. Sacramento and has averaged 12.7 points in his last 14 contests with 12 double‐digit scoring efforts (12 double‐digit scoring games in his first 41 games this season).
Dillon Brooks is aiming for a new franchise rookie record for three‐point percentage (.378)… The current record holder is O.J. Mayo, who shot 38.4 percent from long range as a rookie during the 2008‐09 campaign.
OTHERS
JaMychal Green is averaging 10.7 points and 10.1 rebounds over his last 11 games. Wayne Selden Jr. registered a career‐high 31 points (11‐16 FG, 5‐7 3P, 4‐4 FT) in 27 minutes off the bench on Jan. 20 at New Orleans… Selden, whose previous career high was 13 points,
became the ninth player in franchise history to score 30 points in a game as a reserve… He scored 24 points (8‐14 FG, 6‐10 3P) on Jan. 31 at Indiana, setting a new career high for three‐pointers made.
Ivan Rabb recorded his first career double‐double with 10 points and a career‐high 11 rebounds off the bench on Feb. 6 at Atlanta… Rabb is just the third rookie from the University of California to record a double‐double as a reserve (Leon Powe for the Celtics in 2006‐07, Lamond Murray for the Clippers in 1994‐95)… He is only the third Grizzlies rookie in the last decade to post a double‐double off the bench (Alex Stepheson on March 14, 2016 at Houston; Darrell Arthur on Oct. 29, 2008 at Houston).
MILESTONES
Marc Gasol needs to play three more games to reach 700 for his NBA career. The National Sports Media Association (NSMA) announced that Memphis Grizzlies television play‐by‐play announcer Pete Pranica of FOX Sports Southeast was voted the 2017 Tennessee
State Sportscaster of the Year, his first NSMA State Sportscaster of the Year award… Pranica will be honored during the 59th annual NSMA Awards Weekend from June 23‐25, 2018 in Winston‐Salem, N.C… Currently in his 14th season with the Grizzlies (and his 25th calling NBA action), Pranica is a six‐time finalist for Tennessee State Sportscaster of the Year and has been involved in three Emmy‐winning productions: two as a commentator for NBC at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and one with the Grizzlies.
