Fastener needs vary project to project, andthe safety and life expectancy of the project can beextended or compromised based upon the fastener used.

When selecting a fastener, be sure to consider thefollowing:

1. Determine what materials are being joined. Thiswill establish whether a nail or screw is needed, andwhat type of nail or screw.

Attaching to wood:� Hardwood, such as redwood and cedar: Stainlesssteel is the only recommended fastener for redwoodand cedar.

� Softwood, such as pine or other untreatedlumber: For greater holding power, use ring shanknails instead of smooth or spiral shank.

� Treated lumber: Chemicals used to prevent rot andinsect infestation may increase fastener corrosion.PrimeGuard Plus-coated and stainless steelfasteners carry a lifetime guarantee against rust andcorrosion when used with any treated lumber.Grip-Rite hot dipped and exterior galvanizedfasteners are also approved for use with treatedlumber. Look for the yellow starburst for treatedlumber fasteners.

� Composite lumber: Consists primarily of recycledplastic trash bags and waste wood fibers. Specialfasteners have been developed to accommodate theunique characteristics of this material, includingPrimeGuard Plus composite deck screws in colorsthat match the most popular composite decking hues.

� Attached to steel: If attaching to steel, thicker steelmay require a self-drilling point, whereas a sharp orself-piercing point may be more appropriate for thinnersteel.

2. Determine the total thickness of the materialbeing joined. This will establish the length of thefastener needed.

Examples for determining total material thickness:� 1/2" plywood to 1/2" plywood = 1/2" + 1/2" = totalthickness

� 20 gauge steel (.033) to 1/2" plywood =.033 + .5 = total thickness

� 20 gauge steel (.033) to 18 gauge steel (.043) =.033 + .043 = total thickness

Fastener length for any material-to-wood will bedetermined by the specific embedment requirement,although 3/4" to 1" will normally be required.Steel-to-steel or composite-to-steel connections willrequire three screw threads to be exposed.

The length for most nails is measured from thecenter of the bearing surface of the fastener (thehead) to the end of the point. Casing nails, finishnails, and brads are measured from the top of thehead rather than from beneath it. Duplex nails aremeasured from the underside of the lowest head.

The length of a screw is measured from the bearingsurface of the fastener to the end of the point. Forexample, a flat head is measured from the top of thehead to the end of the point, whereas a hex washerhead is measured from under the head to the point.

3. Determine where the fastener will be used.Inside? Outside? High-moisture area? This willestablish whether or not a fastener with additionalprotection against corrosion and rust will be needed.Outdoor applications and other high-moistureenvironments will require a fastener specificallydesigned for these conditions.

How to select the right fastener for your project

4. Determine how many fasteners will be needed.

� Roofing - estimate that five pounds of nails will applythree squares of shingles

� Siding - estimate that five pounds of nails will applytwo squares of siding

� Drywall - estimate that one pound of 1-1/4" screwswill apply nine 4'x8' sheets of drywall

� Decking - estimate that five pounds of 2" screws willapply 500 lineal feet of top decking

� Framing - estimate that one pound of nails will frame10' for 16" on-center framing

Screws Versus NailsThere may seem to be many nails and screws designedto perform the same function. However, in general,nails take less time to drive, but screws provide a tighterfit, a neater appearance, and the ability to be removedwith relatively less damage to the surrounding material.Nails are most commonly used to fasten wood to wood,but are also used with masonry, drywall, and plastic.Screws can be used with those same materials, but areexclusively recommended when attaching to steel.

Fasteners - General InformationFastener Coatings and FinishesMost fasteners are made of steel unless otherwisenoted.

Bright - Bright, uncoated steel finish intended for usewhere corrosion resistance is not required.

Blued - Degreased and heat-cleaned to form thin blueoxide film required by lathers.

Cement coated - Resin coating which providesshort-term holding power.

Vinyl coated - Eases nail driving and provides greaterholding power.

Phosphate coated - Chemically treated with a grayferric phosphate protective coating. Surface is alsoetched for greater holding power. Good base for paintsand other finishes.

Gold zinc - Gold-colored zinc applied overelectrogalvanized surface for additional corrosionresistance and for aesthetic appeal.

Electrogalvanized - Zinc coating applied to steel withan electrical charge. Offers limited resistance to rust.

Mechanically galvanized - Zinc coating applied bytumbling with powdered zinc and glass beads. Offersincreased corrosion resistance, comparable to hotdippedgalvanized when equivalent amount of zinc isused.

Hot dipped galvanized - Zinc coating appliedby dipping into molten zinc. All Grip-Ritehot dipped galvanized meet the ASTM A-153standard for hot dipped galvanized.

Exterior galvanized - A proprietary zinc/polymer coatingthat offers equal or superior corrosion protection to tradi-tional hot dipped galvanizing. PrimeSource may provideexterior galvanized or hot dipped galvanized fastenersinterchangeably, depending upon market conditions, atno additional cost.

PrimeGuard Ten® - Proprietary coating thatcarries a 10-year guarantee against rust andcorrosion when used with treated lumber.

PrimeGuard Plus® coating - Proprietary coating with alifetime guarantee against rust and corrosion, includingwhen used with treated lumber.Stainless steel - Lifetime guarantee against rust andcorrosion. Use when working with cedar, redwood, ortreated lumber.

Aluminum - For specialty applications when workingwith aluminum, such as gutters and trim. Lifetimeguarantee against rust and corrosion. Not for use withtreated lumber.

Copper - For specialty applications when working withcopper or where appearance is a factor (copperweathered by age and exposure to elements can providedesirable appearance).

Resistance to BendingCertain applications, such as concrete, masonry orextremely hard woods, require a "harder" than normalfastener. The type of steel the fastener is made of, andany treatment after its manufacture, can increase itsstffness.

� Regular stock steel - bright, non-hardened, usuallylow or medium low-carbon steel. This is the standardunless otherwise specified.

� Stiff stock - bright, non-hardened, usually medium ormedium-high carbon steel. Harder and stiffer than aregular stock steel nail.

� Tempered hardened steel - After manufacturing,fastener is heated, resulting in a hardened outersurface with increased resistance to bending.

What makes exterior fasteners different?Corrosion resistance. Indoor applications somewhatshield nails and screws from moisture and other factorsthat can cause the fastener to corrode. However,fences, decks, sheds, siding, and other outdoor projectsare continuously exposed to the elements. And so arethe fasteners holding them together.

Fastener corrosion resistance is evaluated using an"hour rating" system based upon ASTM B117. Thisprocess involves placing fasteners in a test chamber andsubjecting them to heat and salt spray. When thefastener breaks down or starts to rust, the time framebecomes the fastener's rating.

These ratings do not translate to exactly how long ascrew will be in a deck board before it begins to corrode,but it seems logical that the longer the fastener maintainsits integrity, the better.

What can cause a fastener to corrode?Rain, salt and snow from winter conditions, cleaningsolutions, etc. Not only is the holding power of the fas-tener compromised but also the metal itself begins toreact with the wood surrounding it, causing unsightly dis-coloration and staining.

Many woods are treated with chemicals to prevent rotand insect infestation, and these chemicals can also cor-rode fasteners. Dacrotized and electrogalvanized fasten-ers are not suitable for use with this wood. PrimeGuardPlus-coated fasteners and stainless steel fasteners areapproved for use with all treated lumber, and still carrytheir lifetime guarantee against rust and corrosion whenused with this material.

There is some discoloration that occurs naturally,regardless what material is used to pierce the wood.Wood contains tannins, self-preserving water-solublecompounds, that are often released when wood ispenetrated. The tannins themselves may causediscoloration. This is commonly known as "extractivestaining."

Tannins, acidic by nature, may also react with the iron infasteners, leading to additional blue/black gray staining.

Some woods, especially decay-resistant types such ascedar and redwood, contain relatively more tannins thanother species. Only PrimeGuard Plus stainless steel fas-teners are recommended for use with cedar and red-wood, and still carry a lifetime guarantee when used withthese woods.

So while some discoloration is to be expected, the goalis to minimize additional staining whenever possible.

Rust-Oleum®Accelerated weathering testing in accordance with ASTMG85 was conducted. The PrimeGuard Plus fastenerswere driven into corrosive ACQ treated lumber to simu-late a typical application, then placed in an environmentaltest chamber. The test chamber accelerates corrosionby continually alternating one hour cycles of fog (with0.05% sodium chloride and 0.035% ammonium sulfate tosimulate an industrial environment) and one hour cyclesof dry heat.

Independent testingContinual testing is conducted according to ASTM B117Salt Spray Testing procedures. The corrosion chambergreatly accelerates corrosive conditions by spraying aconstant 5% salt solution on the fasteners at a stablecabinet temperature of 95°F. This procedure is one ofthe most effective corrosion tests in the world, and isused by many industries including aerospace, automo-tive, and compliance.

Michigan State UniversityTesting was conducted using the American WoodPreservers Association's E12 methodology. Three dif-ferent types of treated lumber (CCA-type C, ACQ-type D,and CA-B) were used, each at ground contact treatmentlevels much higher than what is normally used in resi-dential deck construction. This test also utilized an envi-ronmental test chamber that maintained 90% humidity toaccelerate possible corrosion

An Overview of Nails

A Brief History of NailsThe use of nails goes back thousands of years. Bronzenails, found in Egypt, have been dated to 3400 B.C., butthe Romans are generally credited with the first use ofiron. The earliest nails were hand-forged, usuallysquare in shape with all four sides tapering to a point,and resembled spikes, suited for the building materialscommonly in use. Over time, as building materialsevolved and new products were introduced, customizednails were developed to keep pace with the changingindustry.

Prior to the American Revolution, England was thelargest manufacturer of nails in the world. However,nails were virtually impossible to obtain in the AmericanColonies, where it was not unusual for families to have asmall nail manufacturing process in their homes by thehearth. Entire families made nails not only for their ownuse but also for barter. Even Thomas Jefferson had hisown nail producing facilities at Monticello, and he tookgreat pride in them.

The first major innovation in nail production occurred inthe late 1700s, with the introduction of cut nails. Cut or"square" nails are not actually "cut," but are shearedfrom steel plate that is the thickness of the nail shank.The invention of water-powered "slitting mills" made thisnew technology possible, and rapidly put the UnitedStates at the forefront of nail manufacturing. Hot ironwas hammered, or later rolled, into sheets, which werethen slit into long, square-sectioned bars by shear-likerollers. Two sides of the cut nail shank are parallel, asthey represent the thickness of the plate from whichthey were sheared. The cutting machine tapers theother two sides of the shank, while a second machineforms the nail head.

Cut nails could be produced much more quickly andsomewhat less expensively than hand-forged nails, andstarting in the mid-1800s, began to dominate theindustry. A machine that produced stamped nails with asimple head was also introduced at this time with limitedsuccess. Still, nails continued to be expensive toproduce and used sparingly. It was not uncommon for abuilding to be burned down and the ashes combed forthe nails for reuse.

"Modern" nail manufacturing may have started in theU.S. as early as the 1850s with the importation ofFrench wire nail machinery. These nails were notintended for construction but for other light-dutyapplications such as bookbindery. The early 1900s isgenerally accepted as the turning point for wire nailproduction, from which point on they have dominatedthe industry. Wire nails have a round shank, and areproduced by steel wire fed into a machine that grips thewire, cuts it, makes the head, and chisels the point, allin one operation. The process is totally mechanized,can produce thousands of nails per minute, andprovides a significantly less expensive nail thanprevious methods.

The relatively low-cost wire nails have all but replacedcut nails. However, the cut nail has a holding power ofapproximately four times a wire nail. It is because ofthis impressive holding power and the hardness of thenail that cut nails are still used today for projects suchas masonry and flooring.

What Does Penny Mean?The term "penny," as it refers to nails, is thought tohave originated in medieval England to describe theprice of 100 nails. For example, 100 3-1/2" nails wouldcost 16 pence, whereas 100 2-1/2" nails could bepurchased for six pence. This system of classifyingnails by size according to price was in place by 1477A.D. The letter "d" used to represent "penny," standsfor the Latin name given to Roman coins, denarius.Traditionally, nails used for wood-to-wood applications(decking, wood siding, framing, etc.) are referred to inpenny sizes, while nails for non-wood applications(roofing, siding, etc.) are referred to in inches.

Nails usually start at 2d (1" long), and range up to 60d(6" long). From 2d to 16d, the penny length increasesby quarter inches. Above 16d, the size increases byhalf inches. Nails longer than 60d or shorter than 2dare described in inches or fractions thereof. A verythick nail or one longer than 6" is considered a spike.Nails less than 1" long are called wire nails if they havea head, and brads if they have a very small head ornone at all.

Nail HeadsFlat head - Most common nail head. Provideslarge surface area for greater holding power.

Large flat head - Larger than standard head,usually more than 3 to 3-1/2 times the shankdiameter. Provides greatest surface area forultimate holding power. For applications suchas sheathing and insulation.

Checkered flat head - Helps to stop slippage ofthe hammer on the head with applications suchas framing, where excessive hammering maytake place.

Countersunk head - Conically shaped bearingsurface, which compresses the surface of thematerial under it as it is driven. Aids inconcealment of the fastener head.

Deep countersunk head - Reduced holdingpower, but increased concealment of thefastener head. Using primarily on casing nails.

Brad head - Deep, circular, barrel-shaped head.Reduced holding power, but increasedconcealment of the fastener head. Usedprimarily with finish and trim work.

Duplex head - For temporary nailing jobs, suchas scaffolding and concrete framing.

Cupped head - Concave or recessed topsurface to accommodate material to aid withconcealment. Used primarily with drywallfasteners.

Oval head - Used in certain geographic areasprimarily with siding to avoid contact betweenthe hammer and the siding.

Nail PointsDiamond point - Most common nail point.To avoid splitting wood, best for medium tosoft wood.

Long diamond point - For use withdrywall. Eases driving into hardermaterials.

Blunt point - Reduces splitting, but not aseasy to drive as a diamond point.

Nail ShanksSmooth - Most common for everyday projects, providesthe least amount of holding power.

Barbed - Horizontal or herring-bone indentations in theshank. Relatively better hold than smooth shank, butfar less than a comparable threaded nail.

Screw/spiral - Designed to drive into hard woods anddense materials. Nail actually turns when driven, muchlike wood screws. Very good holding power.

Ardox - Designed to drive into hard woods and densematerials. Square wire is twisted to form the spiralshank, which results in the threads reaching all the wayto the head of the nail. In comparison, most nails aremade from round steel wire and the spiral or ringshanks are actually cut into the wire.

Ring/annular thread - A series of closely spacedconcentric rings around shank. Nail does not turn whendriven; instead, the wood fibers are forced over the ringshoulders into their annular grooves like wedges. Givesgreatest holding power in soft or medium woods.

Fluted - Vertical thread for driving into cinder block,mortar joints, or other relatively soft masonry tominimize cracking and provide high holding power.

An Overview of Screws

A Brief History of ScrewsDebate still rages today as to who actually invented thescrew. Some scholars credit the Pythagoreanphilosopher Archytas of Tarentum (c. 400 B.C.) for iden-tifying the helical shape that forms the thread of thescrew. But it is generally accepted that the ancientGreek engineer Archimedes (c. 287 B.C.) is the "Fatherof the Screw." Early screws were hand-carved of woodand lacked a point, more closely resembled a bolt ratherthan a modern screw. Not yet used as afastener, these early screws were used in wine, linen,and olive oil screw presses, as well as in water pressesfor irrigation and for pumping mines and ship bilges.These were the common applications of screws forroughly the next two thousand years.

The marvelous leap from screws for wine presses toscrews for fastening may have developed in response tothe limitations of nails. Hand-forged nails of the daywere thick and long, and therefore could not be used forjoining thin or fine materials, including metal. Also, nailscould not be easily extracted without damage to thesurrounding material, and their holding power waslimited only to the strength of the fibers holding them inplace. Somewhere along the way the metal screw wasborn.

By the 1500s, hand-forged metal screws could be foundin metal armor, locks, and clocks but were not yet in usefor common joinery applications. These early screwscould be described as a nail with a threaded shank anda slot in its head for ease of removal. Both thethreading and the slot were carved by hand, which ledto significant differences from one screw to the next.The process was extremely laborious and timeconsuming, resulting in a very expensive fastener.

The late 1700s ushered in the era of mass-producedscrews. This started with the development of machines

that could mechanically and evenly carve the screwthreads, which was a tremendous leap forward. Initially,the slot in the head of the screw still needed to be handcut with a hack saw, but as time went on the techniquewas perfected and this step became part of the overallprocess. These first machine-made screws had bluntpoints, but by the late 1800s further innovations had leadto the development of mills capable of producing pointedscrews.

Just as with nails, as new building materials andtechniques are introduced, screw drives, heads, threads,and points have evolved to keep pace with the changingtechnology.

Pilot HolesPilot holes are used only with screws to ease driving intothe material. A self-drilling screw virtually eliminates theneed for a pilot point, but there are several instanceswhere pilot holes are needed:

� When attaching to masonry.� When working with aged hardwoods. Excessivedriving resistance may be encountered aroundknots and tight grain. A pilot hole will preventsplitting and make driving the screw easier.

� When working close to the edge of material. Woodmay split, depending on the grain of the wood.

� Drywall and particle board can develop distortionsdue to the compression of the material, resulting inreduced holding power.

A pilot hole should be equal to or just less than the rootdiameter of the screw thread. In hardwoods, pilot holedepth should equal the screw length. In particle boardand softwoods, pilot hole depth should be 2/3 of thescrew length. This allows the leading two or threethreads to penetrate solid material and insures adequatepull out strength.

Pan head - Flat bearing surface is ideal forattaching light-gauge steel to light-gauge steel(i.e., track lighting).

Pan framing head - Flared bottom of headrests flush against steel; prevents dimpling ofsteel.

Round washer head - Broad head bottomprovides additional holding power.

Trim head - For fine carpentry applications.Countersunk like finishing nails.

Washer head/modified truss - Provides alarger bearing area for working with softermaterials.

Wafer head - Flat, wide head ideal for installingcement board.

Hex washer head - Hex head can be drivenwith nut driver.

Twin-lead/double-lead - Two helixes spiraling aroundthe screw shank. Provides increased holding power andpotentially faster application speed.

Screw PointsMost screw drives, heads, and threads are consistentfrom one industry to the next. However, there is a morepronounced difference when it comes to screw points.As Grip-Rite fasteners are intended primarily for generaland specialty construction projects, points designed formachinery, automobile assembly, and other heavyindustry are not featured here.

Wood Applications:Sharp point - Standard screw point forfastening into wood and other medium tosoft materials. May also be referred to as a"Type A" point.

Type 17 - Long, sharp point with flute, whichcreates its own pilot point as well asdisplaces some of wood pitch.

Spade point - Resembles a shovel orspade. Used primarily to attach cementboard to wood or light-gauge steel. Thespade point penetrates the board withoutcracking it.

Wood to Metal ApplicationsWinged point/shank- Used withself-drilling point when attaching wood tosteel or other hard material. Wings or"reamers" eliminate pre-drilling of thewood. Wings break off when they hit thesecond material to allow the threads toengage for a tight joinery.

Pilot point - Used for attaching up to 3/4"to 1-1/8" materials to thin gauge steel.The leading blank shank eliminates threadengagement, which is the primary cause ofjacking.

Metal Applications:Self-piercing point - Needle pointdesigned for use in relatively thin sections.The point literally stabs through thematerial, making a hole slightly smallerthan the minor diameter of the threads.This allows the threads to extrude themetal for increased thread engagementand reduces the tendency to strip-out.

Self-drilling point - Point designed to drillthrough very thin sections too thick to bepierced. Point is either smooth (pilot point)or winged. Wings eliminate pre-drilling ofwood.

What Does"Penny Nail" Mean?The term “penny”originated in Englandmany years ago. Ten penny,four penny, etc., nails got theirnames from the fact that onehundred nails of that size cost tenpence, four pence, etc. Today, pennyrepresents the definite length of a nailmeasured from the head to the tip of thepoint. The term"penny" is still shown byusing the English pence sign, "d."
