We have reached the end of what has been a tough year with commodity markets being under pressure and impacting on many of our businesses. The dry bulk shipping market fell to its all-time low in February. Our port operations, terminals and rail businesses were specifically impacted by weak commodity markets with diminished demand for capacity at the ports and terminals and no new demand for locomotives. Container volumes through South Africa’s ports declined by 7% year on year, placing pressure on our logistics business.

However, as cycles go, our landscape will change and we are well positioned to benefit from an upswing in commodity markets and shipping rates.

Dry bulk shipping rates have gradually improved to a two-year high in November. We have seen substantially improved volumes through Maputo port, with October seeing the best volumes since November 2014. Our coal and magnetite terminal in Maputo is now fully contracted. The feeder container service (OACL), ships agency and clearing and forwarding business continue to perform well despite declining volumes and Grindrod Bank continues to grow its assets under management and is performing very well.

While Grindrod remains financially strong with very little debt on the balance sheet, we remain cautious in the development of new projects. The Maputo Port Development Company channel dredge is over 90% complete and due for completion in January 2017. This will increase draft to over 14m and allow vessels of up to 120,000 DWT to call at Maputo Port. An IVS ship, Mineral Belgium, is currently loading 90 000 tonnes of chrome, a new record loading.

We are hopeful that our new oil tank terminal in Coega will commence construction during 2017.

We welcome Mrs Zola Malinga to the board as a non-executive director and look forward to her valuable contribution. Wishing all our customers, business partners and employees a happy Christmas and a peaceful festive season.

Thank you for your continued support.

CAROLINE HUOT COCKETT GROUP GLOBAL HEAD - LUBRICANTS Caroline has joined the Cockett Group with 20 years global experience in downstream oil industry with a speciality in lubricant trading, an extensive network of vendors and customers worldwide. Caroline will be based in Singapore and is tasked to develop and manage the lubricant business globally. In symmetry to the Cockett Group’s global and multi-cultural organisation, Caroline speaks fluent French, Spanish, Portuguese and has a good understanding of the Russian language, which will in itself provide a wider scope for her to develop lubricants. Cockett Group is delighted to have her join the team and believe she is well placed to create and develop a reliable global and multimodal lubricant supply chain for the organisation.

Our regional initiative started late 2015, led by the Istanbul branch efforts for a dedicated focus on marketing of marine lubricants. This move provided us with clear feedback that we have room for sustainable growth and that we have a capacity to expand this activity on a global basis. In addition to marine applications, our existing global coverage and the expertise built within our teams, Cockett Group are equally confident that there will be further synergies to be explored on land based lubricants marketing as well.

Cem Saral, Group Chief Executive Officer for Cockett Group commented, “At Cockett Group we are continually searching for new talent to aid our business growth. The expanded reselling division with a dedicated focus on lubricants and Caroline joining our team, enables our products and services to develop further. This is an exciting time for the Group.”

Caroline Huot, Global Head – Lubricants said, “It is a very exciting time for me. The Cockett Group provides global coverage, marine lubricant logistics, as well as shipping, to meet customer expectations. In addition, the strength of the Group on the shipping market for fuels and the service values attached to the brand are bringing to this new initiative both spirit, commitment and synergies thus promising strong expansion and bringing real benefits to ship owners and ship managers around the globe. In a period when the shipping industry is still struggling and the products and services offered by some traditional networks are being somewhat downsized, I strongly believe that the market will support Cockett Group’s expansion in the Lubricants field”.

Cockett Group is one of the world’s leading providers of marine and petroleum products and services, owned by Vitol Group (50%) and Grindrod Limited (50%). Headquartered in Dubai-UAE, the Group operates from 16 offices globally spread

Sturrock Grindrod Maritime believes in the value of diversity and transformation. This applies on a company level and within the South African economy. To this end, we have stipulated as part of our strategy for 2016 to support small black-owned business in the maritime industry. This is not as easy as one might think as there are very few black entrepreneurs in this space. Mid-2016 we engaged with a young entrepreneur who started a business called Mvano Marine.

When we met, Ngazi Qongqo was a 66% owner of the business and sharing office space. He is now a 100% owner of the business. Since our first engagement, we have had discussions with Ngazi and have found ways to support his fledgling business. SGM offered unused office space in the Cape Town offices at 2 Long Street for a period. He has the support of the HR, Finance and Brand team who have helped him with staffing requirements and office branding, as well as access to the CEO for advice and guidance.

Mvano Marine supplies and supports all marine technology, training, dynamic positioning and simulation systems which form a relatively new area of specialisation called mechatronics. Ngazi’s business is closely aligned to the Marine Tech division of SGM and he will be working closely with that team. In the climate South Africa finds itself in, it is young and dynamic individuals like Ngazi that are the future of transformation in our country. It is up to established businesses to give these entrepreneurs opportunities so that they are set up for success. SGM has formulated our BEE strategy around making a difference in the community and adding value to the economy, and the support of a small business is directly linked to this strategy.

Grindrod Carrier Logistics (GCL) Automotive reported that Honda Southern Africa has signed a two-year agreement with an option to extend for a further year for the transportation, storage and value added activities for their new motor cars. The agreement comes on the back of over 12 consecutive months of 100% on-time delivery performance.

Just recently, the division was awarded a contract by Mercedes Benz of South Africa to provide transportation and storage services for the Agility Programme. This additional business comes on the back of the recent award to GCL for the

transportation of new Mercedes Benz vehicles in South Africa.

GCL was also contracted by the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa to provide 500 slots per month from Silverton in Gauteng to the Durban Car Terminal. This award complements GCL’s logistics model, and is a huge vote of confidence in GCL’s ability to meet tight deadlines and provide a high quality service. Well done to the team!

Positive outlook for volumes at TCM

The MV BORDER sailed into Durban harbour on the morning of Friday 18 November 2016, having completed her 134th round-trip voyage from South Africa to Mozambique. She transported 2,554 TEUs, the highest number of containers shipped on a single voyage.

Ocean Africa Container Lines celebrate record volumes shipped in a single voyage

On the back of a drastic decline in coal market conditions in the latter part of 2015 and early 2016, the wheel seems to be turning for Grindrod Terminals with new coal contracts being signed, and increased magnetite volumes being realised to its coal terminal in Matola – Terminal de Carvão da Matola (TCM).

From zero coal volumes railed to TCM in January, tonnages slowly ticked up in April with a significant improvement in July on the back of the first coal contract becoming

operational. Two more coal contracts commenced delivery in August and a fourth in September, resulting in coal tonnages increasing to 2.8 million tonnes per annum (annualised).

Magnetite volumes railed to TCM have more than doubled since January; this on the back of the renewal of the Palaborwa Mining Company (PMC) contract.

The combined tonnage of coal and magnetite railed to TCM in October was a record 528,270 tonnes for the month which equates to a tempo of 6.4 million tonnes annualised.

TCM estimates that they will complete 2016 with total exports of 3.8 million tonnes, indicating that they will be well placed to surpass their previous record of 4.1mtpa (achieved in 2015) during the 2017 calendar year.

As a key stakeholder on the Maputo corridor, Transnet Freight Rail has been instrumental in ensuring that this corridor is adequately resourced to deliver the contracted tonnages and continue to grow from strength to strength.

CoreShares*, in which Grindrod is a 40% shareholder, announced in October that all the regulatory approvals were in place to list two new Global ETFs on the JSE. These funds were successfully listed on 4 November 2016. The minimum investment amount is R1000.

The two funds trade in ZAR on the JSE but track global indices. CoreShares is the first ETF business to list the iconic S&P500 index on the JSE. The two ETFs: CoreShares S&P500 ETF – tracks the S&P500 index which consists of the 500 largest US companies in terms of market capitalisation.

CoreShares S&P Global Property ETF - tracks the S&P Global Property 40 index which provides exposure to the 40 largest global property companies in developed markets.

Well done to Gareth Stobie’s team and the teams in Compliance, Corporate Finance, Grindrod Securities and Grindrod Asset Management for their input in bringing this project to fruition.

Grindrod Maputo Car Terminal reports successful train trial

CoreShares* launch new funds

On 15 September, Grindrod Maputo Car Terminal reported another success-ful train. The train consisted of twenty 25 wagons, transporting 100 vehicles destined for the Far East from Pretoria to Maputo. The discharge commenced at 15:50 and was completed without a hitch at 17:10. With the excellent cooperation of TFR and CFM, exporting vehicles through the Maputo Car Terminal has proven to be a cost effective alternative for OEMs.

Grindrod Rail Construction to construct railway line in 2017

On 20 September 2016, Grindrod Rail Construction (GRC) signed a contract with Unik Engineering Construction Botswana for the construction of a railway line to Tshele Hills fuel storage facility in Botswana. The works include the construction of approximately 25 km of track, spurring from the Gaborone to Francistown mainline, leading to the Tshele Hills fuel facility situated approximately 50km north of Gaborone in Botswana. The initial 12 km of track being constructed to heavier axle loading design parameters, is said to be the initial part of the intended Trans-Kalahari line.

The procurement of long lead time materials has commenced with the construction works scheduled to commence in March 2017.

“GRC has expanded its footprint in Africa. This is the first project we will be executing in Botswana and hope this will open up some more opportunities in the country for GRC,” says Crystal Kellerman, Executive Commercial GRC.

Effective 1 November 2016, bunkering services are being offered in the Port of Maputo. The contract was signed on 28 October between the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) and a joint venture headed by Petromoc Bunkering. The port is now able to provide fuel and oil, not only to ships calling at the port, but also to ships at outer anchorage.

“It definitely is an added value to the Port of Maputo and provides further motivation for vessels to make a single call to load cargo and bunker at the same time”, said Osório Lucas, CEO MPDC. “The on-going dredging activity has already made use of the new bunkering services, so we can affirm it is already a successful venture that will allow cost saving for the shipping lines”, he added.

This service is aligned to the strategic plan of the port.

The on-going dredging operation to deepen the access channel of the port from the current -11 metres to -14.2 meters, will allow ships with a DWT of up to 120 000 tonnes to call at Maputo. The dredging, paired with other infrastructure and added services initiatives, will make Maputo Port more competitive from a regional and international shipping market perspective.

“Petromoc is proud to participate in the development of the Port of Maputo and offer its customers a first-class bunkering service, which will increase the number of vessels calling at Mozambican ports and enhance tax revenues This new activity also completes the portfolio of Petromoc in the service of the country,” said Fernando Obed Uache, Chairman of Petromoc Bunkering Limitada and CEO of Petromoc S.A.

Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) is realising the benefits of the recent investments in the Port which included dredging of the port channel – due for completion in January 2017 – and the acquisition of the new mobile harbour cranes with automatic tipplers.

In August, the Mv Bulk Malaysia loaded 40 000 tonnes and achieved a norm of 360 tonnes per crane per hour against a planned norm of 360 tonnes per crane per hour.

With continued fine-tuning of the operations to improve productivity cycles, MPDC have now achieved promised productivity rates with the mobile harbour cranes. This was reflected in the extraordinary productivity levels achieved on 9 October 2016 with the loading of the TW Hamburg. The day shift (from 7am to 7pm) operating with the mobile harbour cranes, loaded a total of 10 357 tonnes. This represents a total of 470

tonnes per crane per hour (or 25 swings per hour). The night shift, from 7pm to 7am, was operating with one crane only to improve the stability of the vessel and managed to achieve 27 swings an hour, which translates to 549 tonnes per crane per hour.

At the time of writing this article, the Mv Mineral Belgium, the first post-dredging Capesize vessel, entered the port (24 November 2016). The vessel, on long term charter to IVS, will load 90 000 tonnes of chrome which will be a record volume of cargo loaded in the Port of Maputo. This was made possible by the investments in the port, including the shoreside cranes. A gearless vessel, such as the Mineral Belgium, is reliant on shore-based loading facilities.

The Mineral Belgium will continue on to Richards Bay to load a further 70 000 tonnes of chrome destined for China.

Grindrod Intermodal expansion

As part of an on-going strategy to expand its footprint in Southern Africa, Grindrod Intermodal (GIM) has acquired a dry port in Nacala, Mozambique. This acquisition, which came into effect on 1 November, provides a base enabling Grindrod to develop further intermodal operations to include integrated cross-docking and freight packing station services.

The Nacala Intermodal Terminal (NIT) is a partnership with Terminals de Norte (TDN). NIT is currently contracted to the Port of Nacala for the provision of empty container handling and storage services as a result of the limited container capacity in the port.

NIT is situated five kilometres from the port, it covers an area of 40 000 sqm, has two container handlers and a full staff

complement. The container facility has a capacity of 3000 TEUs.

There are many exciting opportunities linked to the acquisition of this business. GIM will offer full container handling and storage services as well as specialised reefer and container repair services. Warehousing services will be added to this portfolio in the near future.

The NIT Terminal Manager is Donovan Liedeman and he can be contacted on +258 84 452 6797 or via email [email protected].

Grindrod Carrier Logistics has launched a new ‘Tracking App’ on all Android and IOS mobile platforms. The application named ‘Grindrod Freight Tracking,’ is currently being used to track motor vehicles transported on behalf of OEMs and other clients in the automotive division.

The application has been designed to be rolled out to other commodities in the division which will include petroleum products as well as containers being transported by GCL’s flatbed fleet. Functionality includes: secure access, commodity description, multiple access paths, real time GPS location, ETAs, reminder services (on delivery and at specific intervals) and access to PODs in PDF format.

Kapele Freight will transform into a specialised service provider for the pharmaceutical sector. All customer invoices, excluding pharmaceutical clients, will be issued in the name of R-G. Shipments for pharmaceutical customers will be processed in the name Kapele Freight.

“We sincerely thank all stakeholders for their support during this transition with the objective to ultimately improve our service offering to our valued customers,” says Gideon Botha, Director: Contract Logistics & Pharmaceuticals.

RML, a German trading company, approached Island View Shipping in search of a complete solution for the shipment of gypsum from Salalah, Oman to Durban, South Africa and final delivery to Johannesburg, South Africa. Axel Krumhoff from IVS worked closely with colleagues from Ocean Africa Container Lines and Sturrock Grindrod Maritime to facilitate this shipment.

The Amis Wisdom II, an IVS chartered vessel, discharged 30 000 tonnes in Durban in mid-November. Sturrock Grindrod Maritime provided the ships agency services and customs clearance and Ocean Africa Container Lines provided all terminal operations from stevedoring to storage and distribution.

The OACL team would like to thank IVS and SGM for their support and collaboration which resulted in the second successful shipment of gypsum.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

In the current economic climate, Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) and Kudumba Investments Lda have together initiated activities aimed at reducing the costs of using the Maputo Transport Corridor thus increasing its regional competitiveness and helping to reduce costs to local consumers.

This partnership includes the reduction of tariffs applied to various types of cargo (e.g. rice, fish, cement, rock phosphate, project cargo, etc.) and / or maintenance of some previously reduced rates on a trial basis, as is the case with chromium and nickel.

“Kudumba reiterates its conviction that the Maputo Corridor may only represent an asset if we develop joint efforts to improve the general services to users, in particular, with regard to prompt clearance

in the Maputo Corridor,” said Stephanie (Roula) Baaklini, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kudumba.

“Our goal is to reduce the final cost of the Maputo corridor to the end-user, and therefore we must work with all operators and stakeholders of this corridor. Kudumba has been a key partner and has worked together with MPDC to enhance the competitiveness of the corridor. We hope that more operators will join us in the near future to develop the corridor of Maputo and the region,” said Osório Lucas, Executive Director of MPDC.

Grindrod Logistics Africa (GLA) is pleased to announce that their first rail delivery arrived successfully in Lusaka on 7 September 2016. The train departed from the ArcelorMittal Newcastle Plant on 27 August and went on a journey across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia to reach Lusaka approximately 1,800 kilometres later.

GLA have been appointed to manage the handling, storage and delivery from the Lusaka Rail Siding to the KGL Project site and ArcelorMittal South Africa have provisionally extended the scope to include the establishment of a distribution centre in Lusaka. Thanks to the collaborated efforts of Transnet Freight Rail, BBR and Zambian Railways, this project was made possible and the journey completed successfully.

Ocean Africa Container Lines (OACL) have been shipping Tongaat Hulett’s sugar for many years and have established a sound working relationship over this period. In July 2015, the shipping contract was extended to include warehousing and distribution. The Methven warehouse at Maydon Wharf where fertilizer was previously stored was upgraded to a food-grade facility, and together with the facility at PX in South Coast Road, provided the necessary warehousing capacity to handle Tongaat Hulett’s requirements.

In October 2016, OACL acquired a new facility in South Coast Road. All Tongaat Hulett cargo will now be consolidated and stored at this state-of-the-art warehouse with the capacity to store approximately 50,000 tonnes of cargo at any one time.

The facility also comprises a 4,000 sqm cold room as well as a 15,000 sqm yard area which is currently being upgraded for container storage.

OACL plans on expanding its service offering at the Methven Road warehouse to other food-related products.

Congratulations to Ayanda Gumede who recently completed a skills development facilitator course and is now a certified facilitator. Ayanda has worked hard and was successful in spite of a heavy workload.

A skills development facilitator (SDF) analyses the skills requirements within an organisation and coordinates the execution of the personal development plans of employees, monitors the implementation of the workplace skills plan and reports accordingly to the relevant SETAs.

She also continued with a Business Administration Learnership whilst completing the course.

Congratulations to Grindrod Fuelogic - Alrode for meeting the SA Road Safety& Quality Audit criteria for the transportation of dangerous goods. SASOL has certified Fuelogic as a SA Safety & Quality Assessment System (SQAS) approved logistics service provider to the SASOL Group.

The SQAS is a system to evaluate the quality, safety, security and environmental performance of Logistics Service Providers. This is done in a uniform manner by single standardised assessments carried out by SASOL assessors by using a standard questionnaire. The SQAS certification is valid for 2 years and the operation will

undergo a six monthly spot audit to ensure the standards are being maintained.

Natasha Coetzee, Contract Manager for the Sasol Alrode Operation was responsible for implementing and maintaining the SQAS. She mentioned that implementing the SQAS safety systems was the easy part; the challenge was in consistently applying these standards.

Grindrod Integrated Logistics initiated a learning project to develop middle management and talent in the business.

This was identified as a need and we approached the University of Stellenbosch Business School to provide a customised Management Development Programme (MDP). The first wave of delegates started in November 2015. Although the first roll out of MDP mainly comprises GIL delegates, Wave 2 and Wave 3 have delegates from across the Grindrod Group i.e. Sturrock Grindrod Maritime, Grindrod Intermodal, Terminals, Grindrod South Africa, Rail and Röhlig-Grindrod. This is how synergies are realised! A year later, our first group of participants reached the end of their journey! They experienced many challenges and realised the academic rigour of the programme and we would like to recognise their participation.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

Grindrod’s latest ESG rating according to the FTSE/JSE responsible investment index is 3.6 out of a possible 5 and Grindrod has scored 89% in a super sector relative score. This means that Grindrod’s ESG rating is in the top 11% of Industrial Goods & Services companies in developed markets. The score of 3.6 is a notable improvement from the 3.3 rating of last year.

In 2015, the JSE partnered with global index provider FTSE Russell to create the FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Index and the FTSE/JSE Responsible Investment Top 30 Index. The FTSE/JSE ratings methodology includes in excess of 300 indicators in 14 themes. The indices provide a snapshot of a company’s transparency and management of ESG matters relevant to their business activities. This snapshot is not only important to investors but also potential customers and other stakeholders.

The winners of the 16th edition of the 2016 KZN Exporter of the Year Awards, a partnership between Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) and the Durban Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), were announced at a glitzy gala banquet held at the iNkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban on 20 October.

This year saw the introduction of four new categories, of which three of these awarded recipients for exporting ‘soft skills’ rather than just the usual exporters of tangible products. Driving exports and promoting economic growth in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal is the spark to ignite a growing export industry and ultimately a stronger economy. The event and awards provide a platform and ideal showcase for emerging and

established businesses exporting a wide range of products and services.

Röhlig-Grindrod received the BEE award sponsored by Transnet Port Terminals and was a finalist in the Service Provider Award sponsored by Ethekwini Maritime Cluster.

The awards were adjudicated by Zine Icheku – Transnet Port Terminals, Thato Tsautse – EThekwini Maritime Cluster, Farai Moyo - EDTEA, Louise Pelser - Chairperson of the Durban Chamber Trade and Investment Forum, Claude Moodley - Trade and Investment KZN, Cedric Mnguni - SEDA and Odirile Ramasodi - ECIC. Pricewaterhouse Coopers were the award auditors.

On 25 August, Transnet National Port Authority (TNPA) held a ‘Great Gatsby’ themed event at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) to recognise outstanding terminal operators.

Licensed operators were adjudicated in various categories including Safety, SHE Compliance, Transformation and Best Performance. Durban Port Manager, Mr Moshe Motlohi, said that relationships with licensed operators are central to TNPA’s role as a self-regulating authority that is mandated to execute operational oversight and monitor compliance.

Ocean Africa Container Lines (OACL) garnered the Best Performing Terminal award for the Maydon Wharf precinct at the function. This award was based on the percentage of volume growth per licence. Congratulations OACL!

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

Focus on our communities

Mass abandonment of penguin chicks in the colonies takes place annually between October and January. During this process, adults go into moult to replace their worn-out feathers with brand new, waterproof feathers. Before moulting, penguins will build up their fat reserves to prepare for the three to four week feather-change process when they are confined to land and unable to enter the ocean to hunt for fish. As a result, moulting parents are unable to care for their young, who are then classified as abandoned. These chicks face starvation unless conservation organisations like SANCCOB intervene.

Due to the rapid decline in population numbers, the African penguin was reclassified as endangered in 2010, and today it is estimated that less than 2% (25,000 breeding pairs) of the species remain in the wild. The survival of individual penguins is critical if South Africa is to retain the wild population of one of its most charismatic wildlife species.

Through the Chick Bolstering Project (CBP), SANCCOB and its project partners are contributing to the wild African penguin population by rescuing abandoned eggs and chicks and releasing them back into the wild after being successfully hand-reared at its seabird centres.

Whilst the SANCOB’s Chick Bolstering Project is an essential part of reversing the dwindling African penguin population, it can’t continue without your help. If you ‘adopt’ an abandoned African penguin chick (R600), Grindrod Bank via the Blue Fund will match your donation, effectively doubling your support.

Your investment will contribute towards the cost of fish, veterinary treatment and other essential items that are needed to hatch an egg and /or raise a chick.

You will also receive an adoption pack consisting of a certificate of adoption a photo of your penguin.

If you would like to adopt, visit the SANCCOB website (www.sanccob.co.za).

If you decide to adopt, please don’t forget to email a picture of yourself and your adoption pack (preferably holding up a photo of your penguin), to Sarah Freestone, Manager: Marketing at Grindrod Bank, [email protected].

Grindrod Bank has created the all-female Blue Crew via The Blue Fund as one of its CSI initiatives. Using the Wildlands ‘Wastepreneur’ model, the aim of The Blue Crew is to create sustainable livelihoods, while simultaneously cleaning up some of Durban’s coastal waterways.

The Blue Crew has been structured into two small businesses, headed up by two strong leaders from the Cato Manor community. Each of these team leaders has a crew of women working with them to carry out clean-ups of all recyclable material washed into the Durban Harbour or onto Durban’s beaches. The Blue Fund, through Wildlands’ recycling programme, pays by weight for the recyclable material, creating a sustainable model for the Blue Crew to grow and search for new areas to clean.

As part of the sustainable goals of the project, Wildlands has carried out business training with the team leaders to ensure a complete understanding of the model, thus improving their ability to generate revenue in the most efficient manner.

In time, the Blue Crew hopes to expand its area of operation, thus improving their livelihoods, while at the same time assisting the KZN community to maintain clean and healthy beaches.

The Blue Fund also aims to create awareness around this project, highlighting the waste that reaches our oceans.

Through this awareness, we hope to change the public’s behaviour, thus encouraging individuals to recycle at source.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

The Grindrod Clothing Bank was initiated by Candice Woods as one of the Grindrod Lighthouse Projects. The objective was to collect unwanted clothes from employees and friends and donate the items to various charities.

A call for second-hand clothes was sent out to all Grindrod employees and drop-off points in various buildings, managed by volunteers, were arranged. The volunteers spent weeks collecting clothes and hours sorting the items into parcels for delivery.

On 11 November 2016, 80 bags of clothing, 5 carloads, was donated and delivered to various charities.

A carload of clothes was donated to: TLC Hospice located in the township of Shayamoya in the Kokstad vicinity. TLC

provide palliative home care to the poorest of the poor. The clothes will be given to the needy by the care workers at TLC Hospice. Wildlands ‘Clothes for Life’, based in Hilton, was also a recipient of a carload of clothes. The Clothes for Life project promotes recycling and tree planting. Bundles of clothes are traded for trees and bags of waste. Hopes Closet, a NGO taking care of women in need, received a carload of clothes.

Two carloads of clothing were delivered to a drop-off point at the Antique Café in Durban, where clothes were collected for a street store event on 4 December 2016. A Street Store event creates opportunities for the poor to have a ‘shopping experience’ with dignity; all clothes donated are hung

up on the street for the poor to come and choose what they would like.

A very big thank you to the volunteers - Candice Woods (champion of the project), Pretty Cele, Gavin Spavins, Sarah Freestone, Vasie Bilasur, Nimmi Andrews, Samantha Geel, Levern Moodley - and a big thank you to all the people who generously donated the clothing.

In Gavin Spavin’s words: “It’s a privilege to work at Grindrod with people who share a common desire to make a difference and be the lighthouse!”

Corrie Lotz, Manager – SHERQ at Grindrod Terminals, championed and completed the first Grindrod Lighthouse Project. He rallied19 people from Grindrod Terminals and 1 from Grindrod Locomotives to spruce up the Richards Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals (SPCA) in Richards Bay on 15 and 16 September.

The SPCA provides shelter facilities for the humane treatment of animals, promotes the enactment of laws for the prevention of cruelty to animals, encourages the sterilization of mainly cats and dogs, develops in the general public a humane attitude towards all animal life through education, works for the protection of animals and do any and all things which are not contrary to the law, to carry on the purpose of society.

The SPCA was selected mainly because it is a non-profit organisation that relies entirely on donations and Grindrod stepping in is critical as they would have had to pay for these services. The group painted kennels, replaced broken tiles and created beds out of pallets

and pieces of conveyor. The team was split into two groups and completed the tasks over a two-day period. Staff also donated cat and dog food.

Management has committed to the maintenance of the block of 13 kennels in 2017. SPCA management thanked everybody for the good gesture and for all the generous donations made; they were also thankful that Grindrod Terminals committed to the on-going maintenance of the area that was revamped.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

After the completion of a pedestrian bridge over the railway lines, soil started eroding as a result of excessive runoff rainwater from the parking area. The Terminal de Carvao da Matola (TCM) SHERQ team in Mozambique took it upon themselves, with input from the Terminals Environmental Manager, to combat the soil erosion.

Scrap tyres were placed to reduce the water flow rate and turn the area into a mini-garden. Additional tyres were donated by a local tyre supplier. Annette from Inter alia gardens packed the tyres, created the garden and planted grass.

The project was completed with minimum cost and TCM staff participated in the project with great success. Not only was the soil erosion problem solved, but there was no need to landfill any tyres. Seventy scrap tyres were used to complete the project. Similar projects are planned in the near future.

On Transnet’s recommendation, OACL adopted a football team, Ashley United, as part of a community upliftment project in the Clermont area of KZN. Moshe Motlohi, Durban Port Manager, first introduced the project to OACL and explained how it assisted youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with a sense of belonging, helping them focus on achievable goals and winning!

Ashley United’s home ground is the Christiannburg Stadium in Claremont. They won the SAB League in the 2015/16 season, subsequently winning the national playoffs to be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League which is the third tier of the South African Football Association.

At the time of writing this article, Ashley United are in sixth position in the league, having played eight games into the 2016/17 season, winning two, drawing four and losing two.

We wish the team, their coaches, managers and the community that supports them all the very best and hope that they continue to grow from strength to strength.

OACL would like to invite all Grindrod employees to attend games and support the team. Log position, results and fixtures will be posted on the intranet from time to time.

To create awareness around climate change, a wonderful urban garden was created at Grindrod Bank Kingsmead offices on Friday 25 November 2016.

Sibusisiwe Ndlovu, Grindrod Graduate and Marietjie Coertzen, Grindrod’s Sustainability Professional, were the drivers behind the project.

Durban Solid Waste designed the garden and provided drums and compost. Grindrod Logistics donated tyres and employees donated seedlings and their time to plant the garden. We hope that many more urban gardens will follow.

Did you know that South Africa emits 9.18 tonnes of carbon emissions per capita? That is nearly double the world average of 4.49 tonnes. Did you know that South Africa releases 511 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year? Did you know that the Spekboom is an environmental miracle worker? You guessed it! They planted it!

The Spekboom, is a succulent tree native to the Karoo region of South Africa. They grow to between 2 and 5 meters tall, are very resilient and can live up to 200 years. As with most trees, spekboom absorb carbon from the air to make plant tissue. Unlike most trees, however, is the degree to which this little plant can reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - studies show that one hectare of spekboom plants can remove up to 4.2 tonnes of CO2 per year and that spekboom is about 10 times more effective at reducing carbon than tropical rainforest trees. It’s even 100 times more effective than a pine tree of the same size!

Along with the Spekboom, vegetable seedlings and marigold seedlings were planted. Marigold flowers are natural pesticides.

It is hoped that this Grindrod community garden will encourage staff to take ownership – water the plants if they need it, pull out a weed if you see it and help yourself to the fruits of the garden if you need it.

The Cockett Foundation has been launched to add value, make a difference, have impact, create cohesion in the arena of improving education and the environment through fundraising, sponsorship and team building activities supported by Cockett Group, its team members and shareholders.

“We fully understand the importance of education as we create, invest and further develop our workers and thought leaders within the Group. Furthermore, we are all very aware of the environmental issues facing the oil and shipping industries today

and tomorrow. With this in mind it seemsappropriate to support and get involved in sustainable education and environmental initiatives, projects and causes where we can contribute, add value, have impact and make a difference,” he adds.

Over the next few months, information on forthcoming events and activities and how to get involved with the Foundation will be disseminated to encourage growth in the team, increase presence in the local, regional and global communities as well as work closely with select partners and stakeholders.

Because the Foundation will be facilitated by a committee; potential committee members were requested to come forward by 24 October 2016, to be considered to represent the Group from all regions – Europe, Middle East & Africa, Asia and America. These individuals will be instrumental in identifying and arranging the foundation’s activities collectively across the Group and fulfilling the role of Ambassadors for Cockett Foundation.

“This is a very important concept which we will continue to communicate as it is formally established over the forthcoming months and various activities and events are decided and announced. We look forward to the future success of the Cockett Foundation and making a difference,” Cem concludes.

In celebration of World Environment Day 2016, Ocean Africa Container Lines (OACL) proudly engaged in the sponsorship of the Maydon Wharf Clean-Up project.

World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

For OACL and eight other companies including Transnet National Ports Authority, the event was a great success with passionate volunteers cleaning up areas that were mapped.

The initiative undoubtedly sets a new standard of social responsibility in the Maydon Wharf precinct and sets a powerful example that will inspire other companies and organisations to partake in this venture.

Grindrod Bank was the proud title sponsor of the 2016 Berg & Bush and accepted an invitation to become more involved in this year’s event. Grindrod Bank is passionate about mountain biking and encourages people of all ages to lead an active lifestyle. The three-day race, started at the top of the Drakensberg escarpment near Harrismith ending near Winterton on 9 October.

The event is split over two weeks, the first and second rides, The Descent and The Great Trek, taking mountain bikers from the top of the Drakensberg escarpment near Harrismith and dropping down into KwaZulu-Natal, all the while negotiating the world-famous single track into the bushveld below into Winterton. Riders then camp along the shady banks of the Tugela River at the famous Em’Seni Camp ready to tackle the next two days of spectacular riding

in the bush. With farm-style hospitality and an area rich in history, not to mention incredible riding, it really is a proper adventure on a bike! The final event and ‘original’ event held over two days, is more sociable and relaxed but just as challenging.

Congratulations to Matt Beers and Erik Kleinhans, the overall winners in the men’s Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush Descent Race and Candice Neethling and Vera Adrian, the overall winners in the women’s Grindrod Bank Berg & Bush Descent Race.

From humble beginnings in 2004, the Berg & Bush can now rightly claim to be one of the cycling community’s most anticipated events and showcases some of the most spectacular mountain bike trails in the country, something that participants this year can attest to.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

The China Homelife and Machinex Expo took place recently at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. At least 300 Chinese exhibitors from various industries participated, including: construction, building materials, machinery, textiles, appliances, tools & equipment and electronics & household products.

The Röhlig-Grindrod (R-G) sales team manned a stand at each of these exhibitions during the three days. These exhibitions were attended by thousands of visitors wanting to meet Chinese suppliers and a freight forwarding company better able to assist with their logistics requirements. The expo was widely publicised by online, radio and editorial advertisements which attracted wide groups of daily visitors, including delegations from Namibia and Angola.

Sales representatives, as well as our Customs Affairs Manager Stuart Millar and National Seafreight Product Development Manager Peter van de Biezen, delivered daily presentations to prospective clients on the basics of imports, import duties & taxes and how to select the right logistics partner, hence promoting our business and securing new sales leads for this trade lane.

A cocktail function was arranged by the event organisers on the first evening of the expo which provided networking opportunities for our clients and new prospective clients. Overall, it proved a very successful endeavour for R-G as the only ‘logistics freight forwarder’ represented at the event.

Grindrod Bank has been involved with the Hilton Arts Festival for a number of years as sponsors of the main theatre, aptly named the Grindrod Bank Theatre. “We were delighted that Grindrod Bank was invited to participate again this year at this prestigious event,” said Managing Director David Polkinghorne. “As the highlight on our events calendar, the festival is a must-do experience for both serious and novice theatre-goers alike. It showcases some of the most spectacular examples of artistic and dramatic talent that the South African theatre scene has to offer. The event encourages people of all ages to come out and enjoy the arts in a family-friendly atmosphere. Furthermore, the Hilton Arts Festival seeks to educate and inspire the youth through its Jongosi initiative.”

For the third year running Grindrod Bank has produced the ‘On the Couch’ sessions, offering our guests an opportunity to hear behind-the-scene revelations about some of the performances being showcased at the festival. “This informal Q&A sitting with performers and directors offers insight into their theatrical processes and has become a firm favourite of our client hospitality tent,” said Marketing Manager Sarah Freestone. “We were very privileged this year to have some of South Africa’s theatre elite with the likes of Ismail Mahomed, Dr John Kani, Mannie Manim, Fiona Ramsay and Graham Weir up ‘on the couch’.”

From humble beginnings in 1993, the Hilton Arts Festival can now rightly claim to be one of the arts community’s most anticipated events.

GRINDROD MAKING WAVES AUGUST - DECEMBER 2016

The World Maritime Day 2016 was held at the Gariep (Xhariep) Dam in the Free State on 29 September.

Hosted by the Department of Transport, the celebrations, held over three days, incorporated a careers expo in which Grindrod participated. Grade 10 – 12 students from previously disadvantaged communities were exposed to a variety of careers available to them in the country’s maritime sector. Four bursaries were awarded to deserving learners in the area courtesy of Transnet Port Terminals, and the Free State MEC of Police, Roads and Transport Mr Butana Komphela promised to match the number.

In an interesting move, the celebrations this year were held inland as instructed by Dipuo Peters, Minister of Transport, specifically to expose youth living inland to the maritime sector.

Led by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the global celebration’s theme this year was: “Shipping: Indispensable to the world” – this in recognition of trade statistics indicating that as much as 80% of world’s goods traded in volume, and 70% in value are transported between countries and continents via oceans bearing vessels.

Grindrod Bank recently held a cocktail party at Grindrod Towers in Sandton, Johannesburg, to thank corporate finance, investment banking and property clients for their continued support this year.

Guests were wined and dined, whilst enjoying the al fresco roof-top scene with the sparkling Sandton skyline as a dramatic backdrop.

As part of the evening’s entertainment, guests were treated to a gin tasting session, with the gents from Whisky Rebellion guiding both novices and gin-enthusiasts through four unique and delicious gin-based cocktails.

It was a night of exploration as tasters were exposed to the various flavour profiles and a little history of this complex elixir.

Despite yet another very tough year in the shipping industry, we would like to thank all the sponsors who contributed towards the annual NSRI (Station 19) benefit fundraising golf day. Hosted by Island View Shipping, (a division of Grindrod Shipping) the project raised a solid R80 000 which was matched rand-for-rand by Island View Shipping (IVS).

Mr Roelof Camminga wishes to convey his sincere appreciation to all those who assisted in so many ways towards making it possible for Station 19 to function for another year with a little breathing space.
