IntroductionNon renewable energy sources will become exhausted
by the year 2050.No other notable energy source has been invented yet
or will take time to commercialize on a global scale. Pollution is being a major factor against non
renewable energy sources. So under the green campus initiative, Silicon installed a
30 KW solar power plant for meeting its local loads.
Green Campus Initiative Student initiative of University of Cape Town( South Africa) for
sustainable and environment friendly campus.
This has also been taken up by universities such as Havard University (Massachusetts, USA) MIT ( USA) IIT Powai KIIT University
Silicon Bhubaneswar has also joined the legacy by installing an on grid30kW rooftop solar power plant.
Necessity of Solar Power Plant in Silicon
Monthly electrical energy requirement is 1 lakh units (KWh).
Monthly bill :8-10 lakh Rupees.
Fine is imposed due to over consumption of reactive power.
Hence to ease some load off the grid, the power plant was installed to cater local needs.
Rooftop Solar Power PlantOFF GRID: Here power is stored in batteries which
are later inverted and sent to loads.
ON GRID: The inverter associated with solar plant is directly connected to local grid with suitable frequency.
Silicon has on grid power system.
General Aspects
30 KW on-grid solar power plant at Silicon Institute Of Technology, Bhubaneswar
Contd…
No. of panels: 117 Panel rating: 315 Wp ,24 V No. of DC strings: 6 Estimated annual power output:40-45 MW Inverter: Delta RPI string inverter Inverter capacity: 30 KW. Cost of installation: INR 1.75 Million
Block Diagram
Components Used
Solar PV cell
Material:Mono Crystalline( Silicon cut into wafers)
Maximum output:315KWp Arranged in 6 rows(3x19 & 3x20) Efficiency: 15% So ideal power output=
315KW*117 panels
=36.8KWh
Components UsedInverter
• String Inverter: Single inverter connected for whole system connected in series and parallel.
• Input DC voltage:480-800 V• Max input Current:68 A• 2 internal MPPT’s.• Output Power: 30KVA• Output Voltage: 3Ph, 440V, 50Hz• Efficiency: 98%• Reactive Power: 0.8cap-0.8ind
Components Used
Distribution Panel• Consists of 3 Phase
connection to local grid of Silicon.
Protection Devices
• Fuses• Surge Protectors
Components Used
Net Meter• Bidirectional• Measures both imported
and exported energy
Data Logger Used for monitoring RJ45 connector to LAN
Output Power CalculationSolar Resource Data-India• Satellite data of a location for estimated solar radiation• Details of power plant (Capacity, Azimuth, Tilt, Losses)• Annual output power: 44 MW
Calculation using Capacity Utilization Factor(CUF)
• CUF of Bhubaneswar is 14%• Output= Power rating x CUF x 24hours x 365 days
= (30 KW ) x (0.13) x (24) x (365) ~42 MW annually

Performance Details
Month Avg Daily Units(KWh)
Total Units(KWh) Money saved(INR)
March 159 4938 38,000
April 160 4803 37,000
May 149 4614 34,000
Cost Benefit Analysis
Total cost ~ 17.5 lakhs (30% subsidy) Annual power generated ~ 41 MW Financial equivalent ~ 3.28 lakhs(INR 8 per unit) Break even ~ 7 Years (8% interest) Life Span ~ 25 Years
Direct Profit ~ INR 6 million
Future Expansions
If whole rooftop of Silicon is utilized
• The total area covered would be 7-8 times the present area.
• Total generation would be 328 MW
• Almost one-fourth of total load demand can be met by solar plant.
Solar at your Home 1 m sq. of solar panel gives around 200 W For a 10 m sq area, total power= 2000 W (or 2KW) So monthly power generated= 200 units
Almost half the load demand of a normal home(without AC)
Alternatively, DC output from PV panel can be connected to the charging circuit of inverter.
Conclusion Total power produced annually is ~42 Mega Watts.
Profit of ~3 lakhs per year after break-even.
Clean source of energy.
One time investment, long term returns.
Government subsidies available.
