GPAN’s Fall ‘Presidential’ picnic Marjory Waddill first learned about racing greyhounds while she was working for the CEO of Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “My boss’s wife raised racing dogs and he would sometimes bring them in the office,” recalls the Clarksville resident. “That’s when I knew I had to have one.” A life-long animal lover, Marjory says she’s had pets since she was six years old, so welcoming her first hound — a returned senior named Shadow — in 2006 was a nat- ural part of her passion for animals. Shadow and Marjory had three years together before he died. By then, Marjory knew a senior hound would always be a part of her life, so when she was ready, Poncho, another returned senior, came to live with her. “Greyhounds are the most relaxing, loving creatures,” says Marjory, 86. “And there’s nothing better than a senior hound. They’re sweet and they’re already adjusted to being a pet. People worry that a senior hound won’t be with them long, and that’s possible. It’s also possible they could live four-five years and a two-year-old dog could die tomorrow.” Hounds at Home Like all greyhound owners, Marjory has found no two hounds are alike. “Shadow walked in and the first thing he did was get on the couch, but you just can’t persuade Poncho to do that,” she says. “When I’m reading the paper, Poncho comes up and pushes it out of the way. He wants to be scratched and then he almost purrs. I love that about him.” Marjory’s 87th birthday is in November and she’s look- ing forward to continuing to share her life with hounds. “I tell people I want to make it to 100, and I want to have greyhounds all the way there.” GREYHOUND PETS OF AMERICA - NASHVILLE | SUMMER 2012 www.gpanashville.org Email: [email protected] GPANashville P.O. President’s Column

A word on sponsorsOur Sept. 23 picnic is shaping up nicely. There’ll

be great stuff in the auctions, good food and good shopping. Of course, there’ll be lots of people and hounds. You will be joining us, won’t you?

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and everything we raise goes to the Angel Fund. That’s where we set aside money to care for track-injured dogs like Marmaduke and Undercover.

The picnic is always busy, so I want to say thanks here to our sponsors and donors whose financial and in-kind support powers greyhound adoption. As you look at this list, remember — when you support our sponsors, you support people who support greyhound adoption. As of Aug. 15, they include:

n Blue Pawn Books a Millionn Dennis Papern Designs by Sylvian Dizzy’s Dog Washn Factory at Franklin n Frankln Kennelsn GiGi’s Cupcakesn Grassmere Animal Hospitaln Jim ‘n’ Nick’s Barbecuen Nashville Pet Productsn Mailer’s Choicen Mars Pet Foodn Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Optionn Mobley Veterinary Clinicn Nashville Originalsn Noshville Delin Pet Med Veterinary Hospitaln PetSmartn Petcon Red Dog Wine & Spiritsn Stage Road Animal Hospitaln Starbucksn Taco Mamacitan Total Pet Care Hospitaln Trader Joe’s n Vet-Med Veterinary Hospitaln Williamson County Animal HospitalThe problem with a list is that inevitably, someone

gets left out. If that’s happened we’ll set it straight at the picnic where we’ll have a board up listing everyone whose donations make our work possible.

Look forward to seeing you on Sunday, Sept. 23 at the large events pavilion in Centennial Park. You’ll find me in the foster dog area, so drop by to say hello.

Liz Trapp, President GPAN

GPAN’s 401(Grey) Foster Dog Sponsorship program is a great way to make a significant contribution to greyhound adoption without actually fostering.

A 401(Grey) sponsorship is just $50 per dog. In return, the sponsor’s name appears on the website and on adoptables boards with the description of the hound you’ve decided to sponsor as well as in the newsletter. A profile of each sponsor is posted on the GPAN Yahoo board. For more on 401(Grey), email Mardy Fones at [email protected].

401(Grey) investors between March 20 and Aug. 15 include:

Since September 2011, 401Grey Foster Dog Sponsorship has raised nearly $5,000 for GPAN. These dollars help cover the rising cost of vetting, feeding and caring for recently retired greyhounds who are awaiting adoption. GPAN is a 501(c)3 organization so donations are tax deductible.

Today’s the day to 401(Grey) Auction preview

Used jewelry to help houndsWho doesn’t have out-of-style costume jewelry? Ditto watches that are dated

or don’t run. Donate these items to GPAN and you’ll help the hounds when they’re resold at our upcoming Bling Blast. Proceeds will support adoptable hounds.

Bring jewelry donations to our Sunday, Sept. 23 picnic in Centennial Park and leave them with Lynnae Van Doren at the Foster Dog Bag table. Donations also will be accepted at selected upcoming Meet & Greets so watch the website and Yahoo list for days/locations. They can be mailed to: GPAN, PO Box 1042, Good-lettsville, TN 37070. Need a receipt? Label your donations with your name and address and state a value. Receipts will be mailed.

The sale will be in late October or early November. Watch the Yahoo List/web-site for details. Lynnae’s looking for volunteers to help put on this fundraiser. To volunteer to give a hand, email her at [email protected].

Folks have been generous and clever in the things they’ve donated for our silent and bag auctions for our Sunday, Sept. 23 picnic in Centennial Park. Below is a sample of what will be avail-able, so come prepared to bid high and bid often.

Potential buyers are already talking about this cool hat.

Black-hound lovers, come ready to battle it out for this origi-nal work of art.

This vintage racing silk and muzzle are perfect for framing.

Look for this ador-able clay art pin at the sack auction table. You’ll wear it with Greyt Pride.

This hand-knitted, 100% wool fawn cutie is waiting for a forever home. Don’t disappoint him.
