VALE GEORGE SCHOFIELD OAM
George Schofield OAM, an icon of Victorian
greyhound racing, passed away on Monday at age
99.
He was the only surviving ‘Pioneer’ in GRV’s Hall of
Fame, with his contribution to the sport as an owner,
trainer, breeder, rearer, stud master, chiropractor
and administrator dating back more than 70 years.
George would have turned 100 in April next year,
and visited his local race club, The Meadows, just 12
days before his passing.
Hundreds are expected to attend George’s Memorial
Service, to be held at The Meadows, on Tuesday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Victorian Greyhound Weekly is now one year old.
Launched on 7 October, 2016 Greyhound Weekly is
Victoria’s only independent greyhound publication.
Founding editor and publisher Roger Clark
has been an independent greyhound journalist since
1973, when the original Victorian Greyhound
Weekly in print was launched.
25 years later when the paper closed down, his
Talking and Breeding column transferred to
National Greyhound Form, appeared for five years
in the Greyhound Recorder, then back to NGF until
it’s closure in 2016.
It then moved to ARG online, until it scaled
down greyhound operations during the infamous
state-wide closure scare in 2017.
This led to the birth of Victorian Greyhound
Weekly online, now starting its’ second year.
Thanks for joining us on our journey.

Talking Breeding - Victoria
VICTORIA
THIS week’s review of litters selected from the
Victorian Litter Registrations list, for the week ending
13 September starts with four litters by Australia’s
leading sire, Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x
Princess Bale, from an interesting variety of dams and
bloodlines.
Mawson Lakes breeder, Raymond Borda, has the
first of the four litters, which has one dog and six bitches
from his beautifully bred bitch, Aston Eclipse (October
2013 Magic Sprite x Aston Elle), whose dam is by
Bombastic Shiraz x Elite Oriental (Elite State x Oriental
Angel).
She is from a litter of six named, of which five
raced and won 62 races between them.
Her contribution to the litter’s success was eight wins
and ten placings from her 26 starts.
She won four times over 515 metres at Angle Park
(29.85), where she won the 2015 Champion Puppy
Stakes, three times over the testing 531 metres at Gawler
(30.74), and also won over 460 metres at Warragul.
Ice with that?
Little River Breeder, Katrina Jordan has the second
Barcia Bale litter, which has four dogs and five bitches,
from the well bred, unraced bitch, Lemon Ice (March
2012 Bombastic Shiraz x Greys Lemon Ice*, whose
imported dam is by Gable Dodge x Greys Freeflight
(Fortress x Greys Julianna).
Lemon Ice is from an outstanding litter of ten
named, nine of whom raced and won 86 races between
them, led by Ice Trucker, with 27 wins and Cloak Of
Gold and Dude Rancher, who won eleven races each.
She has winners from the twelve named offspring
from her first two litters, whelped in February 2013 by
El Grand Senor, then September 2014 by Yahoo Omar*
Six for Missy
Barcia Bale’s next litter, registered by Horsham Breeder,
William Hartigan, has four dogs and two bitches, from
the well bred bitch, Missy’s Return (January 2012 Path
To Power x Pushy Princess, whose dam is by Bombastic
Shiraz x Westar Return (Head Honcho x West Dance).
She is from her dam’s only litter, of four named,
who all won races.
Missy’s Return raced 47 times, for five wins and
16 placings, winning four times over 480 metres at
Horsham (27.53), where she also won over 570 metres
(33.42).
Seven for Bev
Devon Meadows breeder, Gail Carter, has the final
Barcia Bale litter this week, which has five dogs and two
bitches, from the well bred, proven producer, Why Not
Bev (January 2010 Collision x Why Not Gail), whose
dam is by Brett Lee x World Mover (World Title x
Dreamy Mover).
She is from a handy litter of eight named, who all
raced, with seven winning 38 races between them.

BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of
greyhounds to follow, based on
their breeding and recent
performances
NINETYMILE TURBO
Black dog, January 2016 Don’t Knocka Him x
Totally Tango.
Trained by Graham Whitford at Yarram for the
Whitford Syndicate.
Raced for the first time when third over 515
metres at Sandown (SAP) on 1 October.
Started from box three and finished 6.66
lengths from the winner, Wise Ricciardo (29.91),
who won by almost four lengths.
That was a good effort first up at Sandown, not
too many win there first up and he is sure to improve
with more racing.
CHATTY GARRY
Black dog, April 2015 Bekim Bale x Harper Seven.
Trained by Karen Pitt at Devon Meadows for the Are
These My Pants Syndicate.
Placed at first two race starts, over 520 metres
at Cranbourne, then sixth there and sixth again over
450 metres at Ballarat.
Stepped up in class when third over 515 metres
at Sandown (SAP) on 1 October, from box six when
beaten 10.44 lengths in the race won by High
Tenacity (29.81), who won by nine lengths.
That was a good effort from that box there and
he is certainly on the improve.
ASTON LEBRON
Black dog, November 2015 Fabregas x Aston
Pearson. Raced by Ray Borda and trained at
Hazelwood, by Vicki Wisener.
Well bred youngster, whose dam is by Aston
Galilee x Aston Ainslie and the damline has
produced the classy Aston Frenkel.
Raced for the first time, over 515 metres at Sandown
(SAP) on October 1 and created a good impression.
Started from box four and finished third, beaten
20.21 lengths in the race won by Hasten Slowly, who
ran 29.70 and won by almost nine lengths.
That run showed he has plenty of ability and he
shouldn’t take long to notch up his first race win.

community and disability sector, with the state’s 13 race clubs hosting community
days between 2 August and 25 October. The community days are social outings
for around 100 groups of the intellectually and physically disabled and their
carers. They also have the chance to share in a pool of $50,000.
Meanwhile, more than $200,000 will be spread among greyhound racing
participants from the racing component of the series, which runs from
October 6-25.

Looking Back Special
A New Era of Greyhound Racing
Sandown 1956
Part 3. - ‘Tin Hare’ Returns Mick Floyd
Greyhound racing changed forever in 1956 when the ‘tin hare’
returned with the opening of the new Sandown Park
greyhound track.
‘Tin hare’ racing, or mechanical lure racing much as we have now,
had made one previous appearance at the White City circuit in
1927. Cars were parked more than a mile from the track as a
crowd of more than 30,000 people forced the organisers to throw
open the gates.
Legislation prohibiting the sport had been drafted but not
enacted before the meeting, but with the bill’s ascension the sport
continued in its traditional formats.
After years of lobbying, proprietary racing (privately
owned and operated) was outlawed in 1955 and non-proprietary
(not for profit) racing behind the tin hare legalised under license
by the new Greyhound Racing Control Board.
The National Coursing Association of Victoria formed the
non-proprietary Sandown Greyhound Racing Club (as it would
come to be known) and promoted one of the two metropolitan
greyhound racing licenses. It had purchased the land from the
Sandown Park Coursing Club greyhound racing in 1955 for
£55,000, and invested a further £25,000 on converting the existing
horseshoe/straight track into a modern circle track and upgrading
amenities.
Over 9000 yards of pack filling, top soil, cinders and
crushed rock was used on the new circuit, with the established
grass coming from the previous track. The track and grounds were
laid out by Arthur W. Purnell, the well regarded architect who also
designed the MCG’s Olympic Stand and conversion of the MCG
ahead of the 1956 Olympic Games.
The design for the new track was based on White City in
London and Newcastle in New South Wales. The result was a
spacious, 460yard grass track with racing distances of 555 yards
and 785 yards (or 420m, 507m and 717m).
Two new grandstands and a sloped asphalt area gave
patrons a clear view of the entire track while providing the latest
amenities. Patrons were also able to view the greyhounds get
weighed and vetted in the kennels through a glass front, and as one
media outlet reported at the time, ‘at no stage will competing
greyhounds have contact with the public generally, eliminating
any opportunities for malpractice.’
The kennels, already regarded as being of the highest
standard, were further improved with sound-proofing and cooling
devices. And all buildings had fluorescent illumination!
Two cameras ensured provided a back up for the judges,
who when calling for a photo, were able to have the image
projected on a slide within 45 seconds, a remarkable feat for the
day. The lure was driven from a dedicated tower on the back
straight.
One of the oddities of the track was a large clock above the
scratching board. It origins are unclear, but its year of manufacture
was 1876.
Transport to the track was by train on the Dandenong line
to Springvale Station (despite being expected to open within
‘about three years’ of the track opening, Sandown Park station did
not open to the public until 1965). A special train departed
platform 6 at Flinders Street station at 6.45pm, returning at
11.05pm. Parlour coaches (from Batman Avenue) and taxis (from
Flinders Street) were also available.
For those who took private transport, two public car parks and a
third for owners and trainers provided space for 1200 vehicles.
Turnstiles were located at the eastern and western entrances. A
third entrance was planned for the far turn, and another opposite
the new Sandown Park station once built.
The opening meeting at Sandown Park was also the first to
offer totalizator betting. The Bell Punch Totalizator offered
punters straight out, place and quinella betting, the later would
prove to be extremely popular. In addition, 53 bookmakers offered
straight out, place and concession betting.
The sky blue, red, primrose and pea green colour scheme
with silvered roofs and fencing posts gave the course a vibrant
appearance.
The track’s gala opening was set down for Saturday 8
September, and after 29 years, greyhound racing was finally ready
for the return of the tin hare.
Paw note – A second proprietary coursing track, Gracedale Park
operated in Springvale from 1938 to 1955. The Springvale Town
Hall now occupies the site.

Special Tribute
Vale George Schofield OAM by Greyhound Racing Victoria
George Schofield OAM, an icon of Victorian
greyhound racing, passed on Monday at age 99.
He was the only surviving ‘Pioneer’ in GRV’s Hall of
Fame, with his contribution to the sport as an owner,
trainer, breeder, rearer, stud master, chiropractor and
administrator dating back more than 70 years.
George would have turned 100 in April next
year, and visited his local race club, The Meadows, just
12 days before his passing.
George was a much loved character, and on
behalf of the Victorian greyhound racing community,
GRV sends its deepest condolences to George’s many
friends and family.

George Schofield is the only surviving ‘Pioneer’ to be
inducted into Victorian greyhound racing’s Hall of
Fame and, quite remarkably, the 91 year old continues
to contribute to the sport today through his work as a
canine chiropractor. Working from a shed on his
property located 30 minutes north of Melbourne in
Yuroke, Schofield’s talents aren’t limited to the
greyhound industry. People drive for miles to have
George run his healing hands over their injured
domestic pets. “I love to see [injured] dogs get better,
especially little paralysed ones. When I see a dog that
can’t move, and then watch it get up and walk away it
is better than all the money in the world”, George said
recently.
Schofield has been applying his chiropractic skills for
over 50 years. He works six days a week from 10am –
4.40pm, having Tuesdays off to “tidy things up around
the place”, and even these days it is not uncommon to
have to queue in line for up to an hour for his services.
“I’ve checked all different types of animals. It’s
something that comes naturally to me. At first I didn’t
charge people. Then I went from charging nothing to
charging a silver coin, then from a silver coin to one
dollar and then from one dollar to 10 dollars”, he said.
Schofield’s contribution to greyhound racing stems far
wider than his chiropractic brilliance. However, he has
been involved in virtually every aspect of the sport,
including spending a combined total of 56 years as an
administrator, 32 of which were as the Executive of the
Greyhound Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association
[GOTBA]. “Some wild men had greyhounds when I
first got into the sport. I always wanted to get into the
administration side of things for the betterment of
greyhound racing”, said Schofield.
Schofield fought long and hard for the benefit of
Victorian owners, trainers and breeders in an era in
which the industry of today would struggle to
comprehend. Schofield’s son-in-law Dr. John
Stephens, the CEO of Greyhound Racing Victoria,
explained that administering greyhound racing was
particularly tough in George’s era. “The administrators
of yesteryear paved the way for the standards of today.
In the old days there was something like 1500
members of the GOTBA and George was on the
Executive. The GOTBA was like the union for
greyhound racing”, Dr. Stephens said.
“Increases in prize money was not a given, nor were
things like racing vests and kennel blocks that were of
a today’s standard. George fought hard for a lot of
those sorts of things as well as open box draws which
for years were conducted by the race clubs. The
administrators worked extremely hard to put systems in
place that could guarantee the integrity of the sport”,
Dr. Stephens added.
Schofield’s time as a committeeman at the Ballarat
Greyhound Racing Club was also critical as he worked
with the GOTBA to save the club from extinction,
while another interesting chapter in his life came with
his involvement with a greyhound called Shan’s View.
George purchased Shan’s View just prior to the 1960
Australian Cup for the then unheard of price of 2,000
pounds [this was a time when 800 pounds bought you a
house].
- 32 -
VALE GEORGE SCHOFIELD OAM
Shan’s View was an odds on favourite in the Australian
Cup final, but tragically broke down, ending his career.
With four kids aged six and under, it is fair to say that
the injury left George’s wife Marie relatively
unimpressed with her husband’s investment. However,
Schofield then put Shan’s View to stud, and he later
became a champion sire of his day.
During his lifetime George has been an owner, trainer,
breeder, rearer, stud master, chiropractor and
administrator. He was even a bookmaker at the
Sandown, Ballarat and North Melbourne [MGRA]
clubs when he returned from four years of war service
in 1945. Incidentally, Schofield was born in Lavington
NSW in 1918. He left school at age 14 and worked
milking cows for 5 shillings a week and walked
greyhounds for Bert Stewart. “I went to school in
Albury. Mr. Stewart trained greyhounds and his son
Wally was a good friend of mine. We walked Mr.
Stewart’s dogs together”, George recalled.
Being a person that was “always prepared to listen and
ask questions”, Schofield was destined to have a long
career in greyhound racing.
He came to Melbourne in 1936 and worked in a
confectionery shop in Nicholson St Fitzroy but
continued his involvement with the sport, handling
‘Iky’ and ‘Coburg Laddie’ for Charlie Haysom, who
both won at Napier Park. Then, prize money was 5 quid
for owners – and handling greyhounds was for love not
money. George then moved to Newmarket and worked
baking bread and training whippets, which raced in
between greyhound events at White City, with Two
Pounds and 10 Shillings being the winner’s prize. He
worked night shifts in Footscray and Brunswick but
trained dogs for the boss when he “knocked off”.
During his time George has also worked with the
Victorian Police Dog Squad, the Australian Customs
Drug Detector Dog unit, the Office of Corrections Dog
Squad and with Dogs from the Security & Emergency
Services Group. To think that someone who has had
such an impact on the canine world and on greyhound
racing in particular is still actively contributing to the
sport today is as fitting as it is staggering. His entry into
the Victorian Hall of Fame comes along with the 2006
Ken Carr Medal, an award that is considered as
greyhound racing’s equivalent to the Brownlow Medal,
and the Order of Australian Medal he received in 2009.
Footnote:
It was a pleasure to know George Schofield for well
over 50 years. He and his late wife, Marie, were my
early mentors on greyhound breeding and I have much
to thank them for.
