Arthur Ashe was an American professional tennis player who broke a number ofrecords in his lifetime, including being the first (and still only) African American maleplayer to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon singles titles. He was also the first toearn the No. 1 ranking in the world and the first to be inducted into the Tennis Hall ofFame. His life and accomplishments, in spite of difficulties, can serve as aninspiration to us all.
"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." - Arthur Ashe

Writing is a skill, not a talent, and this difference is importantbecause a skill can be improved by practice. - Robert Stacy McCainWriting well is one of those skills that can help you in life. Writing is important in every day-
to-day tasks, in higher education, and in your career, no matter what you do. Your writingproficiency is a direct reflection of yourself! If you want instructors and future employers totake you seriously and recognize your talents, you must hone and polish your writtencommunication skills.
Before writing anything, the most important step is to read the instructionscarefully. When writing a research piece, use one of the databases available from the EMULibrary to ensure that your scholarly sources are properly vetted.Use Purdue Owl and verify citations are properly formatted. Don’t forget to includein-text citations to avoid being penalized for plagiarism.Proof read. Read rough drafts thoroughly to make sure your writing is free of bothgrammatical and spelling errors. Read drafts aloud to hear how it flows. Changewords or sentences that seem awkward and you find yourself stumbling over. Remember not to use casual language or clichés in your academic andprofessional writing.Take advantage of the writing resources that are available to you.
The University Writing CenterThe University Writing Center is now open for the Fall 2020 semester. All writing supportwill be virtual. To request support, visit the UWC Request Form.
