Mah-jongMadison Halcovage

I was researching about allusions and an allusion that I was researching about was Mah-jong. Mah-jong is a Chinese game that was developed in the 1800’s. Mah-jong is similar to rummy the card game. It is played with small rectangular tiles with some Chinese drawings and symbols on them. There are 136 standard tiles. They are numbered from 1 to 9. There are 4 of every kind of tile. There can be 2 to 4 people that can play at a time. There are clubs you can join to play Mah-jong to.

Transistor RadioLaicie Ray

The allusion I researched was a transistor radio. What I already knew about the transistor radio was that it was a type of radio that some people today don’t use. What I wanted to know about the transistor radio was how it is different from a typical modern radio that are often use presently. Also when they were created/marketed? What I learned about the transistor radio was that definition of it is – It’s a usually a small battery – powered radio equipped with transistors, and that the radios were marketed in 1954. I found out that the way transistor radios are different from the modern 2013 radios is because a transistor radio is a small portable radio receiver that uses transistor based circuitry. While modern radios are not always small and now people have created apps to let people have access to radios on their phones.

Woolworth’sMichael Toth

When I first got this word I was confident that it was a retail store because it sells radios. I really wanted to know what other products the store sells. I found out that they also sell cheap household items. The store was founded by Charles S. Woolworth. The store started in Utica, NY. This was a success so now you can find Woolworth’s retail store anywhere in the world. Charles and a brother started the business. Their names were Charles and Frank Woolworth.

Neanderthal ManEmilee Whitley

I am doing a Neanderthal man. From the book I know a Neanderthal man is in the context of the book, and it is a type of man. I wanted to know what a Neanderthal man was, here is the research I came up with. A Neanderthal man is an early person who you might consider as a caveman, but they are not. Also, they have more heavily muscled hands than we do.

Traveler’s ChecksIsabelle Borr

For my allusion, I had traveler’s checks. They are an exchange for hard currency at people can use in different countries. My guess was that it was just money orders for traveling, and I was right it was. I also wanted to know are they still in use? It was not surprising that they are still in use, but it’s not very common. Credit cards now take the place of traveler’s checks because if you use them in different countries just like traveler’s checks.

When I first came across the word Chancellor of the Exchequer in the book called From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler I thought it might have something to do with a position of money. I thought it might had something to do with this because the two main characters of the book were talking about which restaurant they wanted to eat at for lunch, and the character Jamie said no to a restaurant the other character Claudia wanted to go to because it was expensive. When I figured what this word meant from the sentence I thought it might have had something to do with the power in the government. I went to the library and looked it up in World Book Student. What it means is a person who is responsible for finance. I’m glad I looked this up because now I have a new vocabulary word to say and actually know what the definition is!

OlivettiEmilee Whitley

For my allusion I am doing Olivetti. From the book I know it is on Fifth Avenue, and Olivetti is a place. I would like to know some more about Olivetti. A fact I found is Olivetti is a typewriter and printer company. This company took over one fifth of Italy. Also, they created a diverse version of communicating.

TypewriterNate Stauffer

What I Know: I know that typewriters use letter keys to stamp ink in the shape of letters on paper. They made it easier to write things over again, so you didn’t have to hand write it. They were used before computers were around for typing.

What I Want to Know: I would like to know how typewriters work, how the key pushed the stamp. I also would like to use one sometime, but they’re considered antiques.

What I Learned: There are 3 types of typewriters manual, electric, and electronic. Each uses a different technology, a daisy wheel, a microchip, or a font ball. Some typewriters have special keys such as different language characters, or mathematical equations.
