It has enjoyed popularity throughout the ages and has been set to a variety of sacred and secular texts. In the 20th century Ralph Vaughn Williams used the tune in his opera Sir John in Love , and Gustav Holst incorpo- rated the tune into his St. Paul Suite . “Greensleeves” is also the melody for the popular Christmas song “What Child Is This?,” which is often performed during the holidays in December. Though most often performed in 6/8 time, this arrangement is written in 3/4 time. The change from compound to simple meter gives the music a slightly different character than is normally heard. The piece contains an introduction and coda, both in a rubato style with common 20th-century harmonies. The introduction features a violin solo, and the coda features a string quartet soli. This is an excellent piece to develop dynam- ic contrast, legato playing and vibrato. First violins and basses shift into 3rd position. All other parts remain in 1st position.
