To be named a Maryland Green School, Greensboro Elementary had to demonstrate a continuous effort to integrate sustainable environmental practices, environmental education curriculum, professional development and community engagement into the culture of the school. This certification signifies that Greensboro Elementary has made a commitment to developing stewards of the earth and reducing environmental impact. “We congratulate the 2017 Maryland Green Schools for all their great work to strengthen environmental education and green practices for their buildings and grounds,” said Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools. “Our State has been at the leading edge in its commitment to environmental learning and practices that will sustain our world for future generations.” The Maryland Green Schools Program is a nationally recognized program begun in 1999. Today there are more than 582 Green Schools certified in Maryland, over a quarter of all Maryland schools. MAEOE will celebrate with Green Schools, Green Centers and schools that are interested in knowing more about the program at the Maryland Green Schools Youth Summit on May 18, 2017, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis. Dr. Carol Williamson, Deputy State Superintendent, will join Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton and Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles at the Summit. Be safe, have fun and we will see you next school year. ~GES PTA All 5th grade students entering 6th grade need to furnish GES with an acceptable proof of residency by May 26, 2017 or your student will not receive a schedule nor begin at Lockerman Middle School. Acceptable proofs of residency can be one of the following: * A copy of your electric, propane gas or oil bill from within the past six months showing your home address. * A complete copy of your lease or rental agreement signed within the last year showing your home address. * Documentation of home ownership (for example, property tax bill or mortgage statement). Please call GES at 410-482-6251 if you have any questions regarding acceptable proofs of residency. Environmental Committee Greeting From the PTA! In addition, on Thursday May 5th the GES Wellness Committee will be hosting a Health Fair, beginning with a FREE healthy dinner, and then an opportunity to learn more about tobacco and various resources in our community to improve your family’s health! If you have questions about the Health Fair, Health Chats, or other wellness center services, please feel free to call the Wellness Center at 410-482- 9148 or the health room at Greensboro School. May is such a busy month for the PTA! Saturday, May 6th, from 11am-2pm is our annual Family Fun Day! We have been planning this event for months, and now it's finally here! Noticias para los de 5o Grado!

Mayo es un mes muy ocupado para la PTA! El sábado, 6 de mayo, de 11am-2pm es nuestro Día de Diversión Familiar Anual! Hemos estado planeando este evento por meses y al final ha llegado! Todavía estamos buscando voluntarios para el día del evento. Esperamos verlos a todos allí! También, el miércoles, 17 de mayo es nuestra ultima reunión general de la PTA. También es una reunión de elección donde votaremos por un nuevo Presidente de PTA, Vice Presidente y Tesorero; venga a votar! Si está interesado en postularse, por favor contáctenos! Mientras se acerca el final, nos gustaría agradecerles por su apoyo continuo durante este año escolar. Esperamos que tenga un verano maravilloso. Manténgase seguro, diviértase, y nos veremos el próximo año.

Todos los estudiantes de 5o grado entrando a 6o grado necesitan entregar a GES un prueba de residencia aceptable antes del 26 de mayo, 2017 o su hijo/a no recibirá un horario y no podrá comenzar en la escuela Lockerman. La prueba de residencia que aceptamos tiene que ser uno de los siguientes documentos: * Una copia de su factura de electricidad, gas o aceite de los últimos seis meses que demuestre su dirección. * Una copia complete de su contrato de renta firmado con fecha reciente que demuestre su dirección. * Documentos si es dueño de casa (por ejemplo, facture de impuestos de propiedad o estado hipotecario). Por favor llame a la escuela al 410-482-6251 si tiene alguna pregunta sobre lo que se acepta para la prueba de residencia.

Saludos de la PTA!

Como se acerca el verano, nos gustaría proveer a nuestros estudiantes de GES con pistas de cómo mantenerse seguros y saludables! Siempre usen bloqueador solar para prevenir daño a la piel durante esos lindos, largos días de verano. Montar en bicicleta es un buen ejemplo de ejercicio- pero el uso de un casco es muy importante para la seguridad de su cabeza y cerebro! Estos son solo unos de los temas que hablamos con los estudiantes durante las Platicas de Salud en el Centro de Bienestar. Estas visitas de educación de salud también son una oportunidad para conocer a la proveedora del Centro de Bienestar, Chrissy Bartz PAC- quien da servicios en la escuela todos los días- Lunes a Viernes de 8am-4pm. Adicionalmente, el Jueves, 5 de mayo el Comité de Bienestar en GES estará patrocinando un Feria de Salud, comenzando con una cena saludable GRATIS, y después una oportunidad para aprender más sobre el tabaco y varios recursos en nuestra comunidad para mejorar la salud de su familia! Si tiene preguntas sobre la Feria de Salud, Platicas de Salud, o de otros servicios del centro de bienestar, por favor siéntase libre de contactarnos al 410-482- 9148 o la enfermería. La Escuela Primaria de Greensboro ha recibido el estatus de Escuela Verde de Maryland por la Asociación de Ambiente y Educación de Aire Libre de Maryland.

Para ser nombrada Escuela Verde de Maryland, la Escuela de Greensboro tenia que demostrar esfuerzo continuo para integrar practicas de ambiente sustentables, currículo de educación ambiental, desarrollo profesional y compromiso de comunidad a la cultura de escuela. Este certificado significa que la Escuela de Greensboro se ha cometido a desarrollar administradores de la tierra y reducir el impacto ambiental.

“Felicitamos a los Escuelas Verdes de Maryland por todo su gran trabajo para fortalecer la educación sobre el ambiente y practicas verdes para sus edificios y área,” dijo la Dr. Karen Salmon, Superintendente de las Escuelas del Estado. “Nuestro Estado es líder en su compromiso del aprendizaje ambiental y practicas que sostendrá nuestro mundo para las generaciones futuras.”

El Programa de Escuelas Verdes de Maryland es un programa reconocido nacionalmente que comenzó en 1999. Ahora hay más de 582 Escuelas Verdes certificadas en Maryland, más de un cuarto de las escuelas en Maryland.

MAEOE celebrará con las Escuelas Verdes, Centros Verdes y escuelas que están interesadas en saber más sobre el programa en el Cumbre de Jóvenes de las Escuelas Verdes de Maryland el 18 de Mayo, 2017, en el Parque Nacional de Sandy Point en Annapolis. La Dr. Carol Williamson, Superintendente Diputada de Estado, se reunirá con el Secretario Mark Belton del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ben Grumbles el Secretario del Departamento de Ambiente de Maryland Grumbles.
