Seniors in China
China population ~1.39 Billion in 2014. 19.3% of world population. Growth in 2013 is ~36.5M and 2.7%. China will be biggest market in the world.
Highest population group is age 40-49 and they will be seniors soon

Cost savings of the GreenPeak System
Allows Seniors to stay at home for 5 to 10 years longer
The cost for a senior in a nursing home is about RMB 50,000 on average per year Cost Nursing Home per life time of a person is approx. RMB 350,000
Cost of the Home Monitoring Solution per life time of a person is approx RMB 10,000
For 100M (50% of the 2013 number) Senior Persons staying longer in their own home, thanks to the GreenPeak system, it will provides the Chinese state an overall saving of approx. RMB 34,000 Billion

Make consumers' lives better, safer and happier
“GreenPeak Technologies is demonstrating its new Family@Home application based on a self-learning algorithm which recognizes patterns of behavior and sends alerts when things change unexpectedly. The company is particularly focused on the growing elder care market, with more seniors now living at home for longer. Another key component of the emerging smart home: Artificial intelligence and machine learning. Many companies believe that consumers want to minimize their time managing all these devices and — like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg — they are looking for solutions that anticipate their needs and take care of them.”

The Internet of Things is nothing more as connecting “things / objects” to the Internet.
Things can be every object in the Home (Smart Home), objects in a City (Smart City, Smart Cars) and objects in the country side (Smart agriculture)
The technology to connect the objects to the internet is readily available and low cost.
However, the technology only enables new business models and opportunities for businesses and governments, it does not defines them.
There is also a big misunderstanding that the Smart Home is about Home Automation, and many large business have failed because of this misunderstanding.

Connecting things to the internet provides more information (Big Data) and enables new business models for the industry, but also supports governments in changing macro economic structures around social issues and energy issues.
The key to the successful creation of business models are; The amount of data available from things and sensors
The intelligence in the cloud combining and analyzing the data
The access by the consumer and businesses to the results of the cloud intelligence
The interaction via Social Media (Smart Phone)
The consumer or businesses willing to pay for the goods / services
Examples of successful and not successful businesses in the IOT Lowes (home improvement chain) in the USA launched a Home Automation initiative called Iris to simplify your life. This initiative
in 2013 was not a big success because a consumer just does not go to a store to automate their home, simply because there is no compelling use case for the consumer to spend their time and dollars.
Nest was acquired by Google for 3.2B$. Why would Google Pay 3.2B$ for a thermostat company ?? The reason is not the Thermostat business but the fact that Nest receives a yearly subscription fee of $40 from the utilities for every user. Why are the Energy Companies doing this?
Energy companies now have access to usage patterns and real-time demand data
Energy companies can communicate grid load data and provides the energy savings back to Nest to control your thermostat and to reduce the consumer energy bill.
So in this model both the consumer and the utilities profit and as such creates a profitable business model
Conclusion; The IOT business models are not determined by the devices or by automation, but by the service models created
through the availability of data and the intelligence in the cloud using the data.
Economic Business Models in the IOT

Moving care to the family supported by the IOT & Social Media
• Low cost <$100 system with
Gateway and simple
movement sensors.
• Algorithms in the cloud
developed over a period of 12
years by TNO, a renowned
government supported
research institute
The cost of Care as a percentage of the working population is a world wide issue.
Without Technology the spending in Europe will grow from 15 to ~ 30% of the GDP during the coming decades.(GDP Europe = 13.000 trillion Euro)
With technology a saving of 5-10% can be reached resulting in ~ 100 trillion Euro savings
The solution is Intelligence in the cloud, which watches over the Seniors and provides warnings over Social Media to the family or care givers, allowing elderly to stay in their own home independently ~ 5 years longer.
Very profitable business case for Service Providers based on low investment cost and relative high achievable monthly fees, and highly supported by governments.
The situation in China is worse compared to Europe, so higher savings can be reached by the Government..
Senior Life Style can be expanded to
urban regions with neighborhood

Connecting home appliances to the internet creates new business models; The current model is that appliances are purchased by the consumer, installed and forgotten.
There is no relationship established between the consumer and the appliance company, and when the economy is bad, the consumer will postpone the purchase of appliances and as such the appliance company sees their income dropping drastically and their stock price will drop as well.
However, when an appliance is connected to the internet the appliance company is able to create new business models including new services towards the consumer.
Example An appliance company can reduce their dependency of the economy by offering lease constructions to the consumer
where the consumer pays an initial fee for the equipment, and afterwards a monthly fee for using the equipment.
The advantages are;
The consumer does not need to have the funds available to purchase the goods. Which means that the sales is not depending of the economic situation. Instead, there is a regular monthly $$ stream relative to the number of appliances installed.
The consumer may pay per usage, eg in case of a washing machine or dryer
The consumer may be able to control and or provide settings to the appliance with the smart phone user interface
The appliance company can provide advice on usage, cleaning and replacement of the equipment via the smart phone and as such creates a solid loyal customer base from which they obtain usage data and with which they can communicate about new available equipment and or services.

Measuring soil and pest conditions and combine these with weather forecast models including intelligent algorithms provide for higher yield, lower cost and more environmental friendly farming.
Increase in food production efficiency and food safety
Based on the sensor information the farmer can choose where and when to fertilize and what concentration of nitrates to use. This can be supported by Analysis in the cloud.
He can water the fields with the exact amount of water needed by the crop, thus allowing precious saving in drought areas.
He can spray pesticides only on those plots that really need it, and not as a global preemptive action on all the fields
The impacts is lower water consumption, lower and optimal fertilizer consumption, lower and targeted pesticide usage.
It does not only makes economic sense, but also makes ecological sense.
Measuring Animal behavior / health
Rapid detection of disease outbreaks Illness detection like E.coli, Uterine Infections
Reduction of antibiotics
Precise timing of insemination and a reduction in the number of inseminations
Shortening of the calving interval
Continuous monitoring of the herd
An understanding of eating behavior and dietary change
Continuous measuring of rumination behavior
