GREENLEAF 1 GREENLEAF www.oshawagardenclub.ca June 2019 From our President While our season is still lagging behind recent years, I can finally say that these spring showers are bringing amazing plants and flowers finally! It is hard to believe that the Strawberry Social and our last meeting before the summer are now upon us. Joanne Shaw will be talking to us about Low Maintenance Gardening on Monday and I, for one, am looking forward to learning how to lessen gardening work, although it does continue to be a labour of love, especially when you have time to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. Thank you to Judy Jaeger and her team for another very successful Plant Sale and to Garry Lucas and Monika Kachel for their work in potting plants and hosting our first Potty Party. Our gardens will all be a little brighter and our treasury a whole lot richer allowing us to enjoy great speakers, interesting programming and social activities, while keeping our membership fees low. Even though we do not meet over the summer, we continue to offer opportunities for fun together. The Peony Festival is almost here, our August 8 Bus Tour will take us to some very interesting gardens, and if photography is your thing, you will be able to sign up for the Photo Crawls again this summer. Volunteer to help with the garden renewal at Parkwood or assist with their Fall Plant Sale. Join Jills team for a little garden upkeep at Hearth Place and dont miss the Sharing Gardens Tour on June 23. Five members are registered to promote our Club at the OHA Convention in Windsor in July. The Oshawa Garden Club continues to contribute to the success of horticulture in our community and to champion for the environment, as we aim for biodiversity in our gardens. Ontario leads in Bee City designations and we are proud that Oshawa is now on the list. Please check the OGC Website and our Facebook Page for news and updates over the summer. So, fellow OGC members, let us continue to grow together, in our gardens, in our community and in ourselves, and I look forward to seeing you at Monday’s meeting. Merle I wish you a wonderful summer and happy gardening!

From our President

While our season is still lagging behind recent years, I can finally say that these spring showers are bringing

amazing plants and flowers – finally! It is hard to believe that the Strawberry Social and our last meeting before

the summer are now upon us. Joanne Shaw will be talking to us about Low Maintenance Gardening on

Monday and I, for one, am looking forward to learning how to lessen gardening work, although it does continue

to be a labour of love, especially when you have time to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of your

surroundings.

Thank you to Judy Jaeger and her team for another very successful Plant Sale and to Garry Lucas and Monika

Kachel for their work in potting plants and hosting our first Potty Party. Our gardens will all be a little brighter

and our treasury a whole lot richer allowing us to enjoy great speakers, interesting programming and social

activities, while keeping our membership fees low.

Even though we do not meet over the summer, we continue to offer opportunities for fun together. The Peony

Festival is almost here, our August 8 Bus Tour will take us to some very interesting gardens, and if

photography is your thing, you will be able to sign up for the Photo Crawls again this summer. Volunteer to

help with the garden renewal at Parkwood or assist with their Fall Plant Sale. Join Jill’s team for a little garden

upkeep at Hearth Place and don’t miss the Sharing Gardens Tour on June 23. Five members are registered to

promote our Club at the OHA Convention in Windsor in July.

The Oshawa Garden Club continues to contribute to the success of horticulture in our community and to

champion for the environment, as we aim for biodiversity in our gardens. Ontario leads in Bee City

designations and we are proud that Oshawa is now on the list. Please check the OGC Website and our

Facebook Page for news and updates over the summer.

So, fellow OGC members, let us continue to grow together, in our gardens, in our community and in

ourselves, and I look forward to seeing you at Monday’s meeting. Merle

I wish you a wonderful summer and happy gardening!

Woo Hoo what a day!

The Oshawa Garden Club had an amazing turnout of plants and people for another

Plant Sale success. It was a wet and cold and windy day, but our volunteers did not let

us down and our shoppers were undeterred. Some said, if we can’t be in the garden,

we will shop for plants! The down side of the damp day was the cancellation of the

workshops. Thank you to Martin Wolfe, who donated canna lilies, including canna

Wolfsong, at a discounted price.

The winners of the draw were Joanne Ray (Kingston), Gerald Bilun (Courtice) and

Brandon Frost (Oshawa)

We are planning now for our 2020 Sale, Saturday, May 30

Thank You to all! Plant Sale Convenor Judy

Mr. Grainger, our May speaker and GLRoberts Plant Sale partner spoke enthusiastically about his pelargonium collection! He recommends Berger, his favourite container mix, a peat-perlite mixture.

June Flower Show

We are still looking forward to seeing what is finally blooming in your gardens and we hope you will bring your special blooms to the June meeting. This is inspirational for members and practice for our Flower Show Judges. Helpful tips for hardening, conditioning and grooming are on the website. We continue to wait for the OHA to print the new edition of the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards book. Horticultural

bring a single stem in a clear container, as this makes it easier for the Judge to observe the whole stem

Judges like foliage and specimens should be shown with foliage , except narcissus and iris

if you know the name of your treasure, please write it on the exhibit tag for bonus points

Design

Design a small floral arrangement in a beer mug or a coffee cup in honour of Father’s Day.

Hope to see your blooms on our table! Debi and Greg OCTOBER – NOVEMBER IS PAY-YOUR - MEMBERSHIP A few new members signed up at the Plant Sale and we now have 201 members. Parkwood Estate Gardens

OSHAWA GARDEN CLUB + PARKWOOD ESTATE = PARKWOOD PROJECT

The Board has pledged $500.00 a year for 5 years to refurbish the Tennis Court Gardens at Parkwood Estate. Historical records are being researched and some volunteers are removing aegopodium podagraria, goutweed. Robin is coordinating a September Plant Sale (Auction?) using the existing plants to raise funds Partners: Durham Master Gardeners, Durham College Horticulture Program Merle and Robin will give an update to the members at the June meeting Leave your email at the Volunteer Table if you are interested in volunteering for this project.

A LITTLE HISTORY Parkwood was the home of Colonel R.S. McLaughlin, the founder of General Motors of Canada. The architectural design by Darling and Pearson is typical of the Country Place Era - 'Golden Age Beaux Arts', with a very grand conservatory. The McLaughlin family had an avid interest in horticulture and landscaping, as evidenced by their eleven greenhouses and staff of 24 gardeners. Today 3 greenhouses are in use and are home to the Japanese Garden and the Greenhouse Tea Room.

The gardens were designed by landscape architects

1917 Harries and Hall

1920’s Dunington – Grubb This couple designed the Arts and Crafts lawns, pavilions, paths, statues and garden rooms including the Italian Garden, Sundial Garden, Summer House and the Sunken Garden. They refined the South Terrace and designed the intricate lattice fencing for the tennis courts. The Italian Garden of the Parkwood Estate in Oshawa holds sculptures of Boy with a Goose by Winkler, Boy with Dolphin and Lady and the Shell by Wyle, Girl with the Squirrel by Loring and Boy on a Dolphin by Cleeve Horne.

Lorrie Dunington and Howard Grubb, both landscape architects, married and moved to Canada in 1911 where they founded Sheridan Nurseries. Lorrie’s love of herbaceous plants may have come from meetings with Gertrude Jekyll, a British garden designer. In 1934 they founded the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and in 1944 Lorrie became President of this Society. Landscape Ontario gives an annual Dunington Grubb award and Sheridan Nurseries is a generous supporter of the Parkwood Foundation.

1935 John Lyle Mr. Lyle studied the Beau-Arts Style and also designed the Royal Alexandra Theatre in 1907. He created a 2-acre 'art moderne' Formal Garden for the estate.
