    Why This Pamphlet?

    Many of us want to be environmentally friendly(or as we say around LSTC - green) but may notknow where to start. This pamphlet is for thosewho desire to be green and may be living in theirown apartment for the first ti me. The followingprovides easy and accessible ways to make yourapartment and our community places that trulycare for creation.

    In Your Life

    There are many things you can do in order tomake your life and apartment more green.These small changes in our daily routines add up

    and do make a difference. Beyond this it isimportant for each of us to reflect on our livesand find ways that we can be more ecologicallyaware of the impacts of our daily decisions. It isimportant that we find ways to incorporate careof creation into our devotional and theologicallife. Care of creation is more than an issue and alist of things to do, it is a way of life.

    In the Kitchen

    Recycle - aluminum cans, glass jars, glass &plastic bottles, & cardboard boxes (see in-structions on your back door)

    Useunbleached coffee filters and other paperproducts

    Setyour refrigerator between38and42;Setyour freezer between0and5

    Fillyour sink with water when you wash thedishes instead of letting the water run (savingup to 25 gallons of water each time!)

    Use cold or warm water when doing the dishes

    Buyreusable canvas bags instead of usingplastic bags when grocery shopping

    Usecloth napkins and towels

    Food- buy fresh, unprocessed foods

    Eatless andlower on the food chain (eat lessmeat and more greens and vegetables)

    Carry a coffee mug or other beveragecontainer with you around campus to limit theuse of paper cups

    In the Rest of the Apartment

    Recycle -paper, envelopes, batteries, andprinter cartridges

    Print on both sides of paper - print single or1.5 spaced if acceptable by your professor

    Usecompact fluorescent light bulbs

    Reuse and donatefurniture instead of buyingnew items

    Userecycled, post-consumer, acid-free noteand office paper

    Turn off lights, the TV, computer, and other

    appliances when not in use

    Growhouse plants in your apartment

    In the Bathroom

    Turn off the water when brushing your teeth,shaving, or washing your face instead ofletting it run (saving up to 9 gallons of watereach time you brush, shave, or wash!)

    Fill out a work order for maintenance to fixany clogs if (and when) your drains stop upinstead of pouring chemicals down them.

    Usenontoxic or lowtoxicity cleaning products

    To Where Shall We Go?

    Sure its great to talk about this stuff, but wherecan I go to get these things?

    Recycling items at LSTC is relatively easy. Eachcourtyard is equipped with recycle bins next tothe dumpster.

    Battery Recycling - bring your batteries to

    LSTC and place them in the bin near the mailroom.

    Printer Cartridge Recycling - AugustanaLutheran Church (across the street from LSTC)recycles some printer cartridges as a fundraiser for their campus ministry. Office Maxalso recycles printer cartridges and gives a $3credit towards your next in-store purchase.

    The Duty Free shop is located at 5430 S. Uni-versity St. Items are donated to the Duty Freestore and shared with the community at no

    cost.

    The Hyde Park Produce mart is a good grocerystore to get fresh fruits, vegetables, and otheritems at a reasonable price. (Located at 53rdStreet and Kimbark)

    Want to take it a step further? There are severalways here on LSTCs campus that you can con-tinue to learn about being a green zone andliving in a community that has a true care forcreation.

    Use a stewardship devotional from LSTC

    Attend Green Zone meetings

    Go to the Web of Creation website(www.webofcreation.org)

    Attend an event regarding care of creation

    Take eco-justice courses at LSTC and throughACTS

    Add an Environmental Emphasis to your courseof study
