SECRETARY’S DESK

I get phone calls on why applications are not processed in a timely manner, well there are many reasons. As I explained in August issue,

the fact that we have only one meeting in July and August can cause a delay. When we don’t get back the reference letters the Investigative Committee will not allow the applicant to be proposed until such time as the paper work is back, this is a Statute. So please be patient. Last Tuesday, I walked by the dirt parking lot at the entrance to our porperty and I noticed six or seven vehicles had parked in a semi-circle towards the front of parking lot. This cut off the rest of the parking lot so nobody could use it. Please be considerate of other patrons who find it hard to get a spot to park. We need all the available parking spots to hold our winter visitors. Friendly reminder: We do not have table service in the lounge. Please return your glasses before leaving your table. Thank you for your cooperation.

LEADING KNIGHT

“And its motto is CHARITY”. These words are spoken by the Leading Knight to every new member at Initiation. What does CHARITY

really mean. Webster defines it in many ways, (1) Benevolence, (2) a voluntary giving of money or help to those in need, (3) the love of man for his fellow man. The first definition is self-explanatory; after all we are the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Secondly, all of us have donated money or our time here at the Lodge to support the many charities that require our assistance here in Green Valley and throughout the State and our Great Country. Let’s look at number three, “love of man for fellow man”. Of course Webster has not gotten politically correct, and doesn’t include our fellow woman, but as Elks we certainly do. Every day we are given new opportunities to share good times, and thoughts with our fellow Elks. In our daily lives we can show each other love and respect, look for the good in each other, and listen to each other, which in turn is of course----CHARITY.

ARIZONA ELKS MAJOR PROJECTS

September 15th was our first tour to the Steele Children’s Research Center since the tours resumed. Another tour will be scheduled in

October. Please call me at 429-7811 or see me at the Lodge if you haven’t signed up and would like to go on a tour. The Elks at Sea Cruise was cancelled because of lack of interest. Another cruise will be scheduled if enough interest is expressed. Sunday, November 30, 2008, is the date for the AEMP Southern District fund raiser. Doors will open at 3 pm and a raffle and silent auction will be held; dinner will be served at 5 pm; and dancing will be from 6 pm to 9 pm. Midlife Crisis will provide the music and Chef Fred will offer either prime rib or chicken cordon blue. Items are needed for the silent auction and raffle. If you have anything you would like to donate please see or call me. I hope that you will mark this on you calendar and plan to attend and enjoy a great evening of entertainment and support AEMP. Our Lodge purchased a copy of the video of Emma Nichole Miller who was born 12 weeks premature. She was at the NICU at UMC and Dr. Allen Beddrick supervised her care. Emma is now home and is doing very well. This video will be shown at Indoctrination as soon as we receive our copy. This video is a real eye opener about how important it is for us to support AEMP. The Youth Camp hosted twenty-four groups this season. The last groups are scheduled for October. A tentative date for the second weekend in November is scheduled for closing the camp for the winter months. If you would like to participate please call me. Last but not least, please remember AEMP when you plan your charitable giving. Donations are down and your help is really needed. If you would like more information about the various ways to make donations let me know. I have forms for the 365 club and the 500 club. Memorial gifts are also always appreciated. Thank you to all who support AEMP. Children’s laughter is what we are after.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Here we are at the beginning of October, where did the summer go? This is an exciting month, we have the Elktoberfest on the

12th. and we’re going to try to fill the Green Valley Community Food Bank van with items to help our neighbors who are needing a little help at this time. We’re having a Chili Fest on the 26th in conjunction with the Green Valley Assistance Services. October is “Hunger Awareness Month” so we thought it would be fun to get together and have some fun and help a worthy cause. For $5.00 and a few non-perishable items there will be three kinds of chili, corn bread, cookies and coffee and a good time. The members of this lodge are very generous and I really appreciate the way you step up to the plate in times of need. If we all work together we can make a difference and have some fun doing it.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING

The Elks Annual Christmas Party for the Veterans at the SAVAHCS will be on Friday, December 19, 2008 starting at 6 PM. We will provide presents for all the patients; have live entertainment and refreshments in the auditorium. Based upon the number of patients who were in the hospital last year, we expect to provide presents for approximately 500 Veterans. 350 patients at the hospital and another 150 at care centers around the area. Since there are few ladies in the Medical Center, we suggest your gifts be primarily for men. I will check on the number of women in the

Medical Center and see that presents will be available for all. If you can send your wrapped presents or cash donations so they will reach us by December 12, 2008, this will allow us enough time to purchase and gift-wrap any additional presents needed for the patients. For your convenience you may send your wrapped presents/cash donations to my address, or to Tucson Lodge # 385. Please do not send checks or cash to the SAVAHCS for they are deposited into the VAMC General Fund and we cannot retrieve them. Checks should be made out to Elks Veterans Service Committee and sent to P.O. Box 2456, Cortaro AZ 85652. Remember that all Elks and their quest are welcomed at the Christmas Party. We have to go up into the wards and Santa will give presents to all the Veterans that cannot make it down to the party. We have a need for volunteers to go up into the wards and bring as many of the Veterans that can come down to the auditorium. This is a very rewarding task and many volunteers are needed to achieve the success of this task. This year slippers are again really needed, but underwear, socks, shirts, sweaters, lap robes, bathrobes and toilette items are always needed. Please wrap your presents before sending them to us. You can get hold of me at (520) 400-4806.

WINning with Major Projects

Linda LewandowskiDirector, Arizona Elks Major Projects

Contributing to Arizona Elks Major Projects continues to be a WIN-WIN for all involved. Of course, the WINS for the kids

are first and foremost. Baby Emma Nichole Miller personifies the WINS resulting from our support for Dr. Alan Bedrick and his staff at the Neonatology Intensive Care Unit at UMC. Emma was born more than three months early. Due to the incredible care she received while in the NICU, Emma is home—outgrowing her clothes, cooing, smiling and generally delighting her family. Ask proud grandparents Tom and Judi Miller about Emma—want to bet they have a picture or two to share? And then there are the hundreds of children who spent time at the Arizona Elks Youth Camp this summer. Nearly 950 children, leaders and family Our participation in these events helps kids all the while we’re having fun. Talk about WIN-WIN! There’re two other WINS. Monetary and gifts in kind donations are fully tax deductible. But, the best WIN, volunteering, gives us a sense of satisfaction that is absolutely priceless. If you can make a financial donation, no matter the amount, it would help so much. However, if your dollars are scarce, why not volunteer to help run an AEMP fund raiser at the lodge or sell a few raffle tickets? Lots of opportunities for those WINS! Members experienced Mother Nature at her finest while learning teamwork, self esteem or family values. And they thought they were just having fun! OK, so what about the WINS for us? There are multiple ways in which to contribute toward children’s laughter. Many of these contributions involve fun and fellowship with other Elks and their families. After all, who doesn’t love a party? For instance, Elks volunteer to work at the Youth Camp, making improvements and keeping it in shape. Others volunteer to be Camp Hosts. And then there are the fund raising events hosted by lodges: Ho Downs, Pig Roasts, Christmas in July, Charity Balls, dinners, picnics, golf tournaments and Horsie Races, just to name a few.

AMERICANISM

When an American says that he loves his country, he means not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies glistening

in the sun, the wide and rising plains, the great mountains, and the sea. He means that he loves an inner air, an inner light in which freedom lives and in which a man can draw the breath of self-respect.

DRUG AWARNESS BROCHURE AWARDS

Pictured below are the Second Place winners in the Drug Awareness Brochure Contest by Division (L to R) South District DDGER Thomas A. Vaclavek, Green Valley Exalted Ruler, Phyllis Curran; Nogales Lodge Exalted Ruler, Ramon Felix and South District Drug Awareness Chairman Wayne Burns.

Pictured are Phyllis Curran presenting a check for $2345 to Frank Sturdevant, Chairman of Elks National Foundation.

In August the Lodge hosted a Hawaiian Luau to raise money for Elks National Foundation (ENF). The mission of ENF is to help

Elks build stronger communities. This pledge is fulfilled by investing in communities where Elks live and work. ENF provides tomorrow’s leaders, our youth, with a healthy beginning. They do this with scholarships, drug prevention programs, athletic programs such as Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot, and Dictionary and Thesaurus programs. ENF never forgets our veterans. They also help the state Elks Associations accomplish their charitable objectives; and they fund projects that improve the quality of life in local Elks communities.

BLOOD DRIVE

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, our Lodge will host its second platelet drive from 9 am to 2 pm. They will do pre-screening tests

during the day for any of you who would like to find out if you are a candidate for giving platelets and/or would like to learn more about the program. On Monday, October 20, 2008, we will be holding another blood drive from 8 am to 2 pm. At the time I wrote this we had fifty donors scheduled. The Red Cross has told us that they could accommodate up to 100 donors if we can sign them up! If you haven’t signed up and would like to you can sign up in the Lobby Tuesday and Friday nights from 4 pm to 7 pm. If that is not convenient for you please call me any time at 429-7811. Remember that if these dates are not convenient for you, then you can give at another site and request that our Lodge receive credit for your donation. Another way that you can support this program is by way of a monetary donation. The American Red Cross Blood Services of the Arizona Region must collect approximately 2100 units of blood weekly to ensure that there is an adequate supply of blood to meet patients needs in our region and nationally. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated. Together we can save lives.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION

I am pleased with the initial response to my challenge of one thousand donating $10 and two hundred more members achieving a goal of $100. October has been designated as Elks National Foundation month so it would be wonderful if we all could re-double our efforts toward this goal. I

continue to be very proud of the B.P.O.E. and how we do care about our communities and by foundation giving we have created a bit of eternity for ourselves because our gifts keep on giving forever. Below is a gift card that you can use to make a donation and leave with the Lodge secretary, Tom Curran. Also, there are donation envelopes at the Greeters desk. Proud to be an Elk.

STUDENTS RECEIVING THESAURUS

Continental School fourth-grade students, left: Gillian Minnehan, Orion Jones, Chandler Tanori, Devyn DeBoer, Emily Seamans,

and Mary Callahan with (back left) Project Chair Tamara Kahrimanis and Exalted Ruler Phyllis Curran. Those pictured and 55 other students received a thesaurus from the Green Valley Elks Lodge #2952. Another 216 dictionaries were awarded to the second-graders of Sahuarita Primary School.

9-11 MEMORIAL DINNER

On September 11, 2008, the fifth dinner was hosted at Green Valley Elks Lodge #2592. The dinner is held to recognize firefighters

and police officers for their service, and to recognize and remember the service that was so courageously demonstrated on 9/11. We also stood together to remember the thousands of Americans who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Off duty emergency response people and their families were guests of honor. Dinner was also prepared at each of the firestations in Green Valley by the Elks. There were about 160 people at the dinner. Chef Fred prepared the meal and the Ladies Auxiliary set up the dinning area and served the meal. The dinner was organized and planned by Frank Sartanowicz who is Chairman of 9/11 Memorial Dinners.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees have faced many issues lately, but none any more

compelling than maintenance and operation of the buildings Air Conditioning systems. The original building was occupied in 1982 and was configured with six A/C units. These are very large single or dual stage units. Of the six original’s one was updated in 1993. The others are totally original. Our research has indicated that the normal

service life of a commercial air conditioning unit in this environment is fifteen years. Over the time of service on the part of this equipment many different maintenance providers have been employed. The result is that the maintenance has not been consistent and the units are currently in poor maintenance. To address these needs the Board has employed Johnson Controls, Inc. to restore, as close as possible, the units to their original specifications. We must remember that these units are eleven years beyond their service of life. It is therefore imperative that a replacement plan be developed. Johnson Controls has offered a plan in which they will service and maintain our current systems and each year for five years replace one unit or a priority basis. The priority will be established after examining the condition of each of the original units. The examination will be conducted jointly by Johnson and representatives of the Board. This program will need to be extended to permit updating of all needed units. The average cost per year over the five year period will be $22,042 which includes maintenance service, and one replacement air conditioner/heater. We know that our members join us in supporting the need or these improvements. We cannot allow deferred maintenance and/or replacement to be postponed or not performed. To do so would result temporary or possibly lack to operate our Lodge home.

To enter into a 5 year contract with Johnson Controls to maintain the 10 Air Conditioner/Heaters and to replace on a priority basis

one each year for the 5 years of the contract. Five of these units are from the original construction making them 25 years old. The rest have been installed at various times. The total cost of the contract will be $110,240.00 or $22,042 per year payable in four instalments each year.

Let’s all get together and make this a booming success !!! To all of you who volunteered and served at the 9/11 Memorial Dinner, me deepest thanks. As always you have shown your willingness to help wherever needed. The Board of Directors has adopted a new charity, namely “Boxes for Servicemen and Women”, this program allows us to send packages to those serving in Afghanistan and Iraq of items that are not readily available to them. Basically, it is toothpaste, tooth bushes, toiletry items, candy, etc. A list of items is available from myself or Jan Schade. You can contribute items to be shipped or make a monetary donation and we will do the shopping. Make checks payable to Jan Schade and they can be left in the Auxiliary slot at the Greeters desk. Be sure to note thecontribution is for military boxes. Any questions on this program you can contact Jan Schade or me. Last but not least, we are still far behind on collection of DUES. If you overlooked getting your dues paid, you can expect a call from the Calling Committee. Give to every other human being Every right that you claim for Yourself
