What is Green Technology?

A continuously evolving group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy to non-toxic cleaning products so as to minimize the effects of human activity on the environment

Page 4: Green Technology and Green Business

Objective

SustainabilityMeeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

"Cradle to cradle" designEnding the "cradle to grave" cycle of manufactured products, by creating products that can be fully reclaimed or re-used

Objective

Source Reduction Reducing waste and pollution by changing patterns of production and consumption

InnovationDeveloping alternatives to technologies - whether fossil fuel or chemical intensive agriculture - which damage health and the environment

Dipti
Renewable energy is energy that can be replenished easily. For years we have been using sources like wood, sun, water, etc. for means for producing energy. Energy that can be produced by natural objects like wood, sun, wind, etc. is considered to be renewable
Dipti
Recycling is a process to convert waste materials into reusable material to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production.
Dipti
Water purification: The whole idea/concept of having dirt/germ/pollution free water flowing throughout the environment. Many other phenomena lead from this concept of purification of water. Water pollution is the main enemy of this concept, and various campaigns and activists have been organized around the world to help purify wate
Dipti
Air purification: Basic and common green plants can be grown indoors to keep air fresh because all plants remove CO2 and convert it into oxygen. The best examples are: Dypsis lutescens, Sansevieria trifasciata, and Epipremnum aureum.[3]
Dipti
Energy conservation is the utilization of devices that require smaller amounts of energy in order to reduce the consumption of electricity. Reducing the use of electricity causes less fossil fuels to be burned to provide that electricity.
Dipti
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.[1]

What is Green Business?

Green Business or Sustainable Business adopts principles, policies and practices that improve the quality of life for their customers, employees, communities and the planet

Page 10: Green Technology and Green Business

Essential Characteristics

Socially and environmentally responsibleGreen companies adopts principles and practices that protect people and the planet

Triple top-line value productionThe TTL Establishes three simultaneous requirements of sustainable business activities - financial benefits for the company, natural world betterment, and social advantages for employees and members of the local community

Dipti
Green companies adopt principles and practices that protect people AND the planet. They challenge themselves to bring the goals of social and economic justice, environmental sustainability, as well as community health and development, into all of their activities — from production and supply chain management to employee relations and customer service.
Dipti
"The TTL Establishes three simultaneous requirements of sustainable business activities - financial benefits for the company, natural world betterment, and social advantages for employees and members of the local community—with each of these three components recognized as equal in status." Whereas many businesses use the triple bottom line, "triple top line" stresses the importance of initial design and is a term attributable to McDonough and Braungart in their book Cradle to Cradle

Solar, wind, geothermal and ocean energyThis principal advocates employing only sustainable energy technology—solar, wind, ocean and geothermal—that can meet the energy needs without negative effects for life on earth

Continuous improvement processThe continuous process of monitoring, analyzing, redesigning and implementing is used to intensify TTL value production as conditions change and new opportunities emerge

Dipti
"This principal[sic] advocates employing only sustainable energy technology—solar, wind, ocean and geothermal—that can meet our energy needs indefinitely without negative effects for life on earth." Other authors, such as Paul Hawken, have referred to this as utilizing current solar income.
Dipti
Operational processes inside successful organizations include provisions for constant advancements and upgrade as the company does its business. The continuous process of monitoring, analyzing, redesigning and implementing is used to intensify TTL value production as conditions change and new opportunities emerge

Blue Fish Clothings

Makes its products from organic cotton and natural fibers exclusively

Once, the company produced a line of clothing made from 100 percent recycled materials. Another time, it made clothes out of a blend of hemp and yak wool fiber.

Uses low-impact dyes Around one-third of the company’s clothing items

are made from other designers’ leftover fabrics

ESTABLISHED BY JENNIFER BARCLAY IN 1985

Dipti
Hemp is a commonly used term for high-growing industrial varieties of the Cannabis plant and its products, which include fiber
Dipti
Conventional dyeing and printing uses a myriad of toxic chemicals, including heavy metals, benzene, formaldehydes and organochlorides. The process requires large quantities of water to wash out the residues, which is then dumped into the local waters of the mills

Community Forklift

Deconstructs instead of demolishing Diverted $12 million worth of building

materials away from landfills since its founding.

Sells the salvaged material at 25 to 75 percent below their retail prices

ESTABLISHED BY RUTHIE MUNDELL IN 2005

Numi Organic Tea

The company doesn’t use wasteful plastic overwrap on its boxes or plastic content in its tea bags.

Numi tea bags are made from hemp-based unbleached filter paper and are biodegradable and home compostable

ESTABLISHED BY AHMED & REEM RAHIM IN 1999
