GREEN SOLVENTS ECO DOT FOR SUSTAINABLE LABORATORY …

As a start-up, we’re developing a service for laboratories that will collect disposables, disinfect them, clean them, sterilize them and return them to be reused again. It’s estimated[1] that global disposable with an increase in research expenditures and (covid) diagnostics hasn’t shrunk since 2014. Currently, this waste is being and dumped in landfills otherwise. Luckily many people, research institutes and hospitals see that this needs to change, but how? I’m Bas Tuenter, founder of Sustainables, a start-up with the goal to prevent all this waste! Last summer I graduated in Molecular Life Science from the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. During my study, I became convinced that we need to be the change to prevent the climate crisis and got involved in the international youth climate movement. I started to change my own behaviour and helped others to do the same. But when I did my internship, something was incredibly off. While culturing my cells, I was creating buckets of waste while I brought a reusable bag to the grocery aisle. That’s when I decided to fix this wasteful practice and started Sustainables. The goal is to With reusable material, that’s being cleaned and returned, researchers have no extra tasks in their already busy schedule. Single-use items are being banned while research and medical disposables are exempt, but for how long? We need to look at and is the most sustainable option. As a start-up I’m still in the development phase which means In order to implement this initiative, I need sustainable minded people to give feedback, test and eventually make the transition to reusables. If you’re intrigued by this initiative, want to know more, help or even start something yourself, please reach out to me and [1] Urbina, M., Watts, A. & Reardon, E. Labs should cut plastic waste too. Our goals by 2022: • Minimize greenhouse gas emis- sions from transportation and buildings • Secure purchase of recycled material where this is possible • Ensure that products purchased are energy efficient and environ- mentally friendly in the customer's installation. • Minimize the use of office supplies through increased digiti- zation • Prevent accidents and limit the consequences of accidents that can damage the external environ- ment. • Prefer environmentally conscious suppliers and partners The large-capacity Axeb/Ther- mo Scientific centrifuges offer significant energy savings in continuous-use environ- ments. Thanks to control func- tions, increased capacity, and modern packaging, they have been developed with consid- eration for the environment. 75% recycled materials and biodegradable foam pellets as well as transport pallets from sustainable plantations and recycled wood further sharp- en the green profile Axeb promotes sustainable technologies and contributes to create significant results. Responsibility plays a central role in Axeb’s values, culture, and organization. We do our outmost to create simplicity and transparency in an otherwise complex business. To us, innova- tion is following the most beneficial approach. Equipment needs to be technologically updated for contemporary use, and our way of dealing and communicating must align with our customers' needs. As an organization, Axeb gives high priority to security, and we go to great lengths to offer a safe working environment. Our employees are all equipped and prepared to advice and support our customers and our techni- cians are certified and highly qualified to resolve the needs of our customers. Like our own standards, our customers and stakeholders have high expectations regard- ing our ethical views and conduct. We strive to maintain these high standards through moral conduct that cares for society, animals, and the envi- ronment Committed to a sustainable future! The goals and standards help us decide what is right and what is wrong in our decisions and considerations about how to best integrate sustainability in our business. Our focus on sustainability also obliges everyone in our company to ensure not only that we are a financially successful business, but that we generate our profits in a socially and environmentally sound way. With our long experience in the proper handling of environmental aspects and the working environment, it was a natural course for us to obtain certifications to prove it. We are proud to announce that we have obtained both ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (working environment) certification. Holm & Halby is also part of the Swedish AddLife group, which has selected three of the UN Global Goals as focus areas for the group, including Holm & Halby. It is obvious for us to focus particularly on global goal 12 “Responsible consumption and produc- tion” as this is an area in which our type of company can make the biggest difference. “Responsible consumption and production” include aspects of a product’s life from cradle to grave – an area in which we offer advice and support in the proper handling in all product phases. Responsible consumption and production The illustration below shows how we offer services throughout every product phase, the aim being to ensure the freezer can remain in use for the longest possible time with minimum consumption throughout its service life – and that it is subsequently disposed of properly. To do so, we must focus on areas that are not always thought of as being part of sustainability, e.g. proper use and proper ongoing maintenance. For example, when we select freezers for our product range, we look for best overall performance in terms of number of tests in relation to consumption – we offer advice on the best location of the freez- er to achieve the best energy use and optimum service life. We have courses in proper maintenance for companies that do not purchase these services from us. If the freezer needs to be repaired, this must be done in a legally correct manner by a certified technician to avoid pollution from refrigerant gases – and finally, when the freezer is to be disposed of, it is important for the product’s total environ- mental footprint that this is done in compliance with the Elretur responsibilities. This means that you can always contact one of Holm & Halby’s product specialists or technicians for advice about increased sustainability for your current or future products; we already have experience with integrating your sustainable product from cradle to grave – and this will allow you carry on with your daily work, yet at a much lower resource consumption. Hounisen Laboratorieudstyr A/S is a Danish, family-owned supplier of laboratory consumables, equip- ment, and chemicals to universities, laboratories, hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industry. Our mission is to make it easier, more flexible, and economical to buy quality consumables at the best price. As a retailer of primarily plastic consumables, we are aware of our responsibility to use plastic with care. We are committed to UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns) by ensuring better opportunities for recycling plastic, minimizing waste during transport, and choosing suppliers with high demands during production. Our latest environmental initiative is a new solar photovoltaic system at the roof of the office building. Hounisen invest in the future: Sustainable return system and on-time delivery SARSTEDT and Hounisen – Partners for a sustainable development The focus on environmental protection is highly integrated in the Management System of our main supplier, SARSTEDT. The company’s Quality Management System is certified in accordance with ISO 13485 (Medical Devices QM-Systems), and the Energy Management is certified in accordance with EN ISO 50001 and confirmed by TÜV Rhineland. SARSTEDT contribute to environment protection, for example, by low weight products, in-line-recy- cling systems in production, reduced packaging volume, recycling of packaging, optimized trans- port, and reduced energy consumption and CO2 emission during production. Hounisen and SARSTEDT present a new sustainable revolution Together with SARSTEDT, Hounisen introduce a sustainable return system for pipette tips in Denmark. We call it Refill Revolution. With this new project we are committed to making better use of our plastic resources by recycling the packaging from pipette tips. SARSTEDT’s innovative pipette system combines exceptionally high quality with minimum material requirements. With its ideal packaging the system requires up to 64% less material, and thus saves energy during production. The sophisticated stacking system offers space for 480 tips. This saves 70% storage space and uses just the footprint of one box. SARSTEDT's packaging is made of pure polypropylene, and the individual components can be recycled, meaning the amount of waste is reduced. Furthermore, components of the pipette system can be stacked on top of each other to save volume during disposal. At Hounisen we have a responsibility to ensure the supply of quality consumables to universities, hospitals, and laboratories in Denmark. We offer next day delivery on stock items as well as tailor-made framework agreements to ensure on-time delivery of critical consumables. Our role as a trusted supplier became even more vital when the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulner- abilities in the global supply chains. Consequently, we now invest in a new, large warehouse located near Aarhus, Denmark. Our investment ensures better prices and faster delivery to our customers. An additional benefit will be a reduction of our total CO2 emissions due to optimized logistics and trans- portation. Our global efforts to decrease the amount of waste have included recycling protective garments from our labs, as well as shrink wrap, plastic bottles, pipette tip boxes and e-waste. Minimizing Waste We continually evaluate the sustain- ability of our packaging to use less paperboard, ink and adhesive, use environmentally friendly materials, and design for recycling or reuse while maintaining product protec- tion and quality. Our environmentally conscious efforts include switching to smaller shipping boxes to use less materi- als, changing to unbleached shipping boxes with sustainably harvested materials and using biodegradable and recyclable air pouches that protect our products. In addition, we have implemented designs that minimize package air space and incorporate better insulating materials, efforts that reduced both shipment weight and the amount of dry ice. Sustainable Packaging With our growing portfolio of products, we want to make a conscious effort to help you be eco-conscious in your lab. Our environmentally preferable products use less packaging, fewer hazardous components and generate less waste. These products can support your existing practices and empower you to discover new opportunities for advancing your sustainability efforts. Our environmentally preferable products include: • Proteinase K (Lyophilized) • Proteinase K (PK) Solution • Maxwell® HT 96 gDNA Blood Isolation System • ReliaPrep™ Large Volume HT gDNA System • ONE-Glo™ EX Luciferase Assay System • 1kb DNA Ladder • BenchTop PCR Markers Environmentally Preferable Products https://www.promega.com/responsibility We do our very best to hold our suppliers accountable to produce and deliver with environmental consciousness. Both manufacturers voluntarily participates in the triangle scheme, where end users can see how to sort their pipette tip boxes. This ensures the best possible recycling of the plastic. In order for plastic to be recy- cled, users are required to sort correctly. A lot of plastic cannot be recy- cled and colored plastic can be a challenge for the sorting machines when melting the plastic for reuse. The UN Global Goals, our certications in ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (working environ-ment) guide us in the planning of our work. The goals and standards help us decide what is right and what is wrong in our decisions and considerations about how to best integrate sustainability in our business. Our focus on sustainability also obliges everyone in our company to ensure not only that we are a nancially successful business, but that we generate our prots in a socially and environmentally sound way. With our long experience in the proper handling of environmental aspects and the working environment, it was a natural course for us to obtain certications to prove it. We are proud to announce that we have obtained both ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 45001 (working environment) certication.Holm & Halby is also part of the Swedish AddLife group, which has selected three of the UN Global Goals as focus areas for the group, including Holm & Halby. It is obvious for us to focus particularly on global goal 12 “Responsible consumption and produc-tion” as this is an area in which our type of company can make the biggest dierence. “Responsible consumption and production” include aspects of a product’s life from cradle to grave – an area in which we oer advice and support in the proper handling in all product phases.

Responsible consumption and production

The illustration below shows how we oer services throughout every product phase, the aim being to ensure the freezer can remain in use for the longest possible time with minimum consumption throughout its service life – and that it is subsequently disposed of properly. To do so, we must focus on areas that are not always thought of as being part of sustainability, e.g. proper use and proper ongoing maintenance. For example, when we select freezers for our product range, we look for best overall performance in terms of number of tests in relation to consumption – we oer advice on the best location of the freez-er to achieve the best energy use and optimum service life. We have courses in proper maintenance for companies that do not purchase these services from us. If the freezer needs to be repaired, this must be done in a legally correct manner by a certied technician to avoid pollution from refrigerant gases – and nally, when the freezer is to be disposed of, it is important for the product’s total environ-mental footprint that this is done in compliance with the Elretur responsibilities. This means that you can always contact one of Holm & Halby’s product specialists or technicians for advice about increased sustainability for your current or future products; we already have experience with integrating your sustainable product from cradle to grave – and this will allow you carry on with your daily work, yet at a much lower resource consumption.

Hounisen Laboratorieudstyr A/S is a Danish, family-owned supplier of laboratory consumables, equip-ment, and chemicals to universities, laboratories, hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industry. Our mission is to make it easier, more exible, and economical to buy quality consumables at the best price. Our latest environmental initiative is a new solar photovoltaic system at the roof of the oce building.

Hounisen invest in the future: Sustainable return system and on-time delivery

SARSTEDT and Hounisen – Partners for a sustainable development The focus on environmental protection is highly integrated in the Management System of our main supplier, SARSTEDT. The company’s Quality Management System is certied in accordance with ISO 13485 (Medical Devices QM-Systems), and the Energy Management is certied in accordance with EN ISO 50001 and conrmed by TÜV Rhineland.SARSTEDT contribute to environment protection, for example, by low weight products, in-line-recy-cling systems in production, reduced packaging volume, recycling of packaging, optimized trans-port, and reduced energy consumption and CO2 emission during production.

Hounisen and SARSTEDT present a new sustainable revolutionTogether with SARSTEDT, Hounisen introduce a sustainable return system for pipette tips in Denmark. We call it Rell Revolution. The sophisticated stacking system oers space for 480 tips.

We oer next day delivery on stock items as well as tailor-made framework agreements to ensure on-time delivery of critical consumables. Our role as a trusted supplier became even more vital when the COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulner-abilities in the global supply chains. Consequently, we now invest in a new, large warehouse located near Aarhus, Denmark. Our investment ensures better prices and faster delivery to our customers. An additional benet will be a reduction of our total CO2 emissions due to optimized logistics and trans-portation.

Since 2008, Promega has reported on our commitment to and progress regarding sustainability. In addition, we have been active participants in the UN Global Compact for almost a decade. From conserving natural resources to giving back to our communities, we strive to be responsible to our employees, our community, and our planet.

Discover PromegaFueled by curiosity. Powered by exploration.

Each new Promega building is designed to meet ambitious sustain-ability goals. Facilities feature geothermal heating, solar panels mounted on the roof and small onsite lakes for grey water usage. Most of the oce spaces are lit by natural lighting, and there are plenty of green spaces inside to improve air quality. Our three largest solar arrays were installed in the last year and together they will generate over 2 million kWh annual-ly. Of course, we implement sustain-able elements to our existing facilities too.

Renewable Energy and Eciency Gains

The “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset is part of the DNA of our company. Our global eorts to decrease the amount of waste have included recycling protective garments from our labs, as well as shrink wrap, plastic bottles, pipette tip boxes and e-waste.

Minimizing Waste

We continually evaluate the sustain-ability of our packaging to use less paperboard, ink and adhesive, use environmentally friendly materials, and design for recycling or reuse while maintaining product protec-tion and quality.

Our environmentally conscious eorts include switching to smaller shipping boxes to use less materi-als, changing to unbleached shipping boxes with sustainably harvested materials and using biodegradable and recyclable air pouches that protect our products. In addition, we have implemented designs that minimize package air space and incorporate better insulating materials, eorts that reduced both shipment weight and the amount of dry ice.

Sustainable Packaging

With our growing portfolio of products, we want to make a

conscious eort to help you be eco-conscious in your lab.

Our environmentally preferable products use less packaging, fewer

hazardous components and generate less waste. These

products can support your existing practices and empower you to discover new opportunities for advancing your sustainability eorts. Our environmentally preferable products include:

Both INTEGRA and Sartorius manufactures tips rell systems making it possible to recycle the

box itself and thereby save on plastic waste.

Both manufacturers voluntarily participates in the triangle

scheme, where end users can see how to sort their pipette tip

boxes. This ensures the best possible recycling of the plastic.

In order for plastic to be recy-cled, users are required to sort

correctly. A lot of plastic cannot be recy-

cled and colored plastic can be a challenge for the sorting

machines when melting the plastic for reuse.
