A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORDFORMULA OF CONCORD, EPITOME
ARTICLE IV: GOOD WORKSLAST SUNDAY OF THE CHURCH YEAR
Condensed from CONCORDIA: THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS, copyright

Whether good works are necessary for preserving faith, right-
eousness, and salvation is another issue in dispute. This again
is of high and great importance, for "the one who endures to
the end will be saved". Faith [does not] lay hold of righteous-
ness and salvation only in the beginning and then resigns its
office to works as though they had to sustain faith, the right-eousness received, and salvation. It means that the promise,
not only of receiving, but also of retaining righteousness and
salvation, is firm and sure to us.
They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand
fast through faith. (Romans 11:20) [He will] present you holy
and blameless and above reproach before Him, if indeed you
continue in the faith.(Colossians 1:22-23)
By God's power [you] are being guarded through faith for a
salvation. (1 Peter 1:5)
Obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your
souls. [1 Peter 1:9]
It is clear from God's Word that faith is the proper and only
means through which righteousness and salvation are not onlyreceived, but also preserved by God. Therefore, it right to re-
ject [those who] say our good works preserve salvation, or the
righteousness of faith that has been received, or even faith
itself. (paragraphs 30, 34-35)

Prayer and Study
Date: November 22 - November 28
Luther Quote: When a Christian begins to know Christ as his
Lord and Savior, who has redeemed him from death, and is
brought into His dominion and heritage, his heart is thououghly
permeated by God; then he would like to help everybody attain
this blessedness. For he has no greater joy than the treasuredknowledge of Christ. So he begins to teach and exhort others,
confesses and commends his blessedness before everybody, and
sighs and prays that they, too, may come to this grace.

With the third-largest population in the world, and the world
coming to its cities, the United States is indeed a vast mission
