History Green Run High School opened in September of 1979. It was the largest school in Virginia at 247,000 square feet. Construction of the building cost $11.4 million. The site was previously used for fox hunting by the Princess Anne Hunt Club and then later used as a garden farm for the Norfolk City Jail. The land was also owned by a Mennonite Farming family until it was sold in the late 1960s as a part of the Green Run planned development. The school colors and symbol were chosen by a committee of students from Kempsville, Kellam, and Princess Anne High School as well as Plaza, Brandon, and Princess Anne Middle School. The school colors are royal blue, Kelly green, and white. The mighty stallions serves as the school symbol. During the 1990’s, Green Run had over 3500 students in the building. In 2012, President Barack Obama visited Green Run during his presidential campaign. Green Run’s rival is Kempsville High School.
