CONFERENCE RATIONALE
Continued growth of rural sector especially agriculture is important for
ensuring food and nutritional security as well as for enhancing purchasing
power of the rural poor. The issues of food security, food safety and food
quality are becoming further challenging and demand for food increases in
national and international markets. To meet these challenges, rural economy
especially agriculture must attain a healthy growth. Pre requisite to unleash
growth of Indian agriculture is technology application supported with
investment in the rural infrastructure.
Government of India has been pressing to achieve 4 percent annual growth in
agriculture. In this scenario agricultural science and technology has potential
to meet supply side challenges but requires larger investments for longer
period. In fact, this is high time to bring reforms in the primary sector to
ensure credit flow, a good risk mitigation system and efficient extension
services and marketing mechanisms for enforcing backward and forward
farm linkages.
