MARCH 2020—Green Pastures Page 1 From the Pastor By Pastor David K. Groth Put on the Spot A few months ago, when I saw my doctor for a regular check-up, he expressed concern. We have to find a way to take X pounds off of you, and Im not sure how were going to do that. Then followed a long silence as he considered my chart. Eventually, he broke the silence. If I were to poke around your pantry right now, would I find potato chips in it?I smiled and answered, No.And if I were to look in your freezer, would I find ice cream?Again, I smiled and said nope. Then, followed another pause. He furrowed his brow. What did you eat for lunch today?!By tone it wasnt so much a question as an indictment, and he had me dead to rights. I told him the truth. I was short on time and groceries in the fridge so I went to Kwik Trip and got a breakfast burrito and a cheeseburger. He put me on the spot that day. Now, please allow me to put you on the spot. When was the last time you invited someone to Good Shepherd?! When was the last time you offered to pick someone up and bring them here?! Feeling convicted yet? When was the last time you witnessed to an individual that Jesus died for him/ her, and with Jesus there is forgiveness and salvation?! You are the light of the worldJesus once told his followers. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket”, he said. That would be foolish. No, he puts it on a stand so it can give light to everyone in the house. He said this not to the religious elite of the day, but to the crowds of ordinary men and women and children who were following him around Galilee. He said it (and is saying it) to people like you and me. The devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh desperately wants us to keep the faith quiet, personal, and intensely private. But Jesus will have none of it. You are the light of the world.Let your light shine! Let it do what he created it to do. Apparently, Jesus believes the world can be a place of deep darkness and in need of your light. So, in all your relationships, in all your involvements, in all your professional and leisurely activities, find a way to let your light shine. The doc didnt have much Gospel for me that day. I know he cares for me, but it was mostly law coming from his mouth. He leaned in and let me have it. Green Pastures Every day, everywhere, by everyone...sharing the grace of the Good Shepherd. Similarly, I don’t have much Gospel for you today. Just know that it comes with love and concern for you and for the Lord’s church. “You are the light of the world.” Be out with it. There is no such thing as a personal and private Christian faith. Hide it under a bushel? No! Let your light shine!

We are faced with a new challenge this year at Good Shepherd Lutheran School. Let

me give you a brief history. Over the past 20 years I’ve been in education I have seen a

dramatic change of clientele in the parents of students enrolled in Lutheran schools. Twenty

years ago most students and their families were active members of the school’s congrega-

tion. Ten years ago about 50% of the families in the school were active in the congregation,

another 25% were members but not active at church, and the remaining 25% were from the

community—mostly members of other congregations without schools. About five years ago,

we saw a shift of population in our school parents. Almost all had been raised in a church

but the number of inactive parents, although still members of a congregation, now outnum-

bered the active parents. This year we are facing a new scenario previously unknown to us:

We have a new generation of parents that was NOT raised in the church and lacks even the

most basic knowledge of Bible teachings. While it’s saddening to see this decline of society,

our staff quickly realized what an amazing opportunity we had to share the Good News of

Jesus and his plan of salvation.

First, we needed to find out the problems. Why weren’t these parents interested in

church? Here are a few reasons we collected:

“I don’t understand what everyone is saying in the books (liturgy) and what it

means. I feel stupid not knowing what’s going on.”

“It’s confusing with the papers and the books.”

“I don’t have good enough clothes to wear for church.”

“Churches are intimidating. It makes me uncomfortable to be in there.”

“It’s boring. I don’t understand any of it.”

  • MARCH 2020—Green Pastures Page 3

I am not telling you these things to undermine our worship practices, space, or

traditions, but rather to ask you to think about these things in the context of someone who

has never experienced “church.” Once we got past the idea of how parents should want to

be in church, we started to understand how unchurched parents were feeling and realized

we needed to find a way to meet these people where they were at.

After much prayer and brainstorming, the staff has embarked on a new avenue

specifically geared toward ministry by instructing this next parental generation. Every Friday

afternoon at 2:15pm we open the doors of the fellowship hall for a brief time of parent/

grandparent socialization. The students join the parents at 2:30pm for our Bible Learning

And Song Time (B.L.A.S.T.) For the next half of an hour we do an activity (skits/ interviews

with Bible characters/ etc.) that teaches basic Bible teachings (this last week was the fall of

Adam and Eve), prayer, and singing contemporary Christian songs.

With the school as the primary mission of our congregation we take our roles as

missionaries to the community very seriously. B.L.A.S.T. is another extension of our Good

Shepherd Lutheran Church ministry that we are using to share the love of Jesus with those

God has put in our path.

Check us out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4CbU3yOltE&t=755s. We would

love to have you join us in person or online!

    In His Service,

    “ C o l d a n d F l u S e a s o n I s N o t O v e r ”

There are more cold and flu cases in WI now than all season. Both are spread from person to person by droplets of moisture when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or touches surfaces after coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose. This person is infectious from one day before having symptoms to 3-7 days after.

What can we do? Certainly flu shots are very beneficial and are still being given. Unfortunately there is no immunization for the common cold which can spread very quickly at home, school or work.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has several recommendations. Number one is flu vaccine. Number two is everyday prevention to stop the spread of germs. Avoid close contact with those that are sick. Stay home from school or work if you are ill until 24 hours after you are without fever. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth since that’s how you spread germs. Children should be taught to keep fingers and pencils and toys out of their mouths. (For younger children avoid toys that can’t be washed and wash those that are washable.) Clean tables, desks and bedside stands that could be contaminated.

Often, we forget about afghans, blankets and pillows etc. that are around the house. Limit the ill child to one blanket and use a bed pillow versus a sofa pillow so the pillow case can be washed. Use Kleenex and place a disposal bag near where the ill person is so the tissues can be disposed of properly. (Soiled tissues cannot be recycled.) Don’t share wash cloths or towels. Be a good example for your children to practice infection control. Don’t forget to clean keyboards, door knobs and phones.

Hand washing is important for everyone. Use soap and warm water and rub all hand and finger surfaces for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer is OK if soap and water are not available. It should be at least 60% alcohol.

Prevention can also include plenty of outside fresh air and plenty of sleep. Avoid excessive stress which decreases your immunity. Laughter can actually increase your body defenses also.

    Some foods are beneficial:

    • chicken soup will free up congested airways and it also provides anti-oxidants and protein to fight the illness

    • garlic provides natural decongestant and strengthens immunity

    • dark chocolate suppresses cough- 2 ounces gives as much cough relief as OTC medications

    • orange juice boosts the immune system in fighting germs

    • bananas encourage mucous production in the stomach to decrease GI distress

    • yogurt contains healthy bacteria that can increase to fight off flu

    • tea is an antioxidant that reduces inflammation. It also lubricates mucous mem-branes and frees congested airways.

“ G O D C RE AT E S A W O R L D AN D A K I N G DOM ” Save the Date! Get ready to punch your ticket for the “Rocky Railway” as we discover how trusting in Jesus pulls us through life’s ups & downs. VBS will be June 8-12. We are looking for

Leaders and Decorators! Huge thank you to Abigail Grosnick for volunteering to be the VBS leader this year! We are still looking for a co-leader. There are several on-going adult bible studies that we would like to feature this month. Take a look at these excellent opportunities to expand your faith and enjoy great fellowship! • Sunday morning class between services, led by Ron Willie: Finishing last lessons of a video study of the

topic of evolution. Next topic will focus on the Gospel Books of the New Testament. • Monday evening (except 2nd Monday of each month), Women's Bible Study. Led by Charlotte Groth,

meets at Good Shepherd School, topic: Bible Recap, Chronological Order, currently in the book of Genesis. • Tuesday evening (1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings), meets at Pastor and Mrs Thompson's home, studying

Truth Project—very thought provoking video series. • Thursday, bible study meets at the residence of Dorothy Degnitz on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each

month. Topics focus on various Bible Study Guides. • Saturday Men’s Bible Breakfast, led by Ron Willie. During the month of March, your children’s Sunday School classes will be discussing the following Bible lessons: March 1 – A Mercy-Full Message: In this week’s lesson, “A Mercy-Full Message,” Jesus tells the famous parable of the Good Samaritan, who risks his own life to help a Jewish man whose peril was ignored by his own countrymen. In telling the parable, Jesus answers the question “Who is my neighbor?” for His followers as He challenges us to “go, and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). As a family, you could discuss ideas to help those in need in your community. March 8 - A Prayer Lesson: “A Prayer Lesson” is the title of this week’s Bible lesson. With Jesus’ disciples, we, too, implore, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). Jesus teaches His disciples—and all humankind—the prayer used throughout the Church to this day. Jesus follows His instruction with a parable illustrating how our heavenly Father unfailingly hears all our prayers. As a family, challenge one another to recite the Lord’s Prayer from memory. March 15 - A Shepherd Loves: This week’s Bible lesson is “A Shepherd Loves.” Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd as He promises to lead and guide His sheep. Jesus willingly laid down His life for His sheep, even those who often ignore the voice of the Shepherd. His flock includes “other sheep” (John 10:16), Gentiles not descended from Abraham. David’s familiar Twenty-third Psalm describes the work of our Good Shepherd. Discuss, “When do we often hear Psalm 23 spoken?” March 22 – A Tree View: In this week’s lesson, “A Tree View,” students learn about Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector, who anxiously awaits the arrival of Jesus. Short of stature, Zacchaeus climbs a tree to see the Savior. Despite criticism, Jesus invites Himself to the tax collector’s home. Motivated by Christ’s compassion, Zacchaeus confesses his sin and promises to make restitution. Families could discuss, “How does Jesus motivate you to make a difference in your world?” March 29 – A Crushing Truth: This week’s lesson is “A Crushing Truth.” The events of Christ’s crucifixion unfold in a series of brutal and bloody vignettes: questioned before Pilate, mocked and abused by the Roman guard, nailed to the cross. Jesus hangs between life and death—abandoned by His Father—yielding up His life at the moment He chooses. Multiple witnesses see where Christ is laid in a borrowed tomb. Discuss how you can remember the crucifixion of Christ. Please talk with your children each Sunday and listen to them as they tell you about the lessons they’ve learned in Sunday School.
