Shifting the paradigm

For a sustainable world, we see the transition

form a linear to a circular economy as a

necessary boundary condition.

A circular economy aims to decouple economic

growth from the use of natural resources and

ecosystems by using those resources more

effectively.

We work on recycling, improving product

recyclability, refurbishment and new business

models.

Making the transition

happen

• Material Recovery

• Moving to renewable energy

for lighting

• Business Model Innovation

640 power stationsA global switch to LED lighting would

reduce energy consumption by 40%.

This equals to cutting back the need for

new electricity generation with the

capacity of some 640 power plants.

Refurbishing medical productsRefurbishing medical products

Revive medical products to create an even greater residual value for Philips’

medical equipment and for customers who have to undergo a procedure

with our equipment

 Establish leasing relationships with customers

by upgrading equipment, whereby we take back equipment and then

upgrade it

 Create trust among customers

Moving to renewable energy for lightingMoving to renewable energy for lighting

Bring high-quality lighting to places where currently there is no (reliable)

source of light

 Cost-effective solution

Reducing power needs with LED / Controls / Solar technology instead of

building more power plants

By optimizing both energy and material productivity for the duration of a time-

limited contract and charge service fees in return

At the end of the contract Philips reuses parts where possible and recycles any

obsolete equipment, hence closing the materials loop

Customers can save up to 55 percent on their energy bill a year (depending on location)

Lighting is responsible for 19% of the world’s electricity consumption

and 1.9B tons of CO2 emissions annually.

We estimate that developing countries are wasting 40-50% energy

due to inefficient old-fashioned lighting solutions
