GREEN HOUSE EFFECT

DEFINATION :- Green house effect is phenomenon by

which certain atmospheric gases absorb and trape the infra-red radiation emitted by the planet which is reemitted to the planet as heat.

Page 5: Green house and ozon depleation

MECHANISM OF GREEN HOUSE EFFECT

GREEN HOUSE GAS :-

1. Shorter waves reach the surface. On receiving these strong wave the earth absorbs part of it and reflects back major part of it depending on Its own capacity

Page 6: Green house and ozon depleation

2. The “Kyoto Protocol” is the treaty that was signed by many countries to help prevent more green house gases. The united states is the biggest producer of green house gases. Producing about 25% of the gases associated with global warming Japan and Russia are the next biggest producer. 3. Forest are the areas where a great deal of photosynthesis occurs.

EFFECTS

A slight increase in surface temperature, say 10

C can adversely affect the world food production.

Rise in sea levels due to melting of ice also reverse flow of sea water into river ‘ Narmada ‘

2005 Tied 1998 as world’s hottest year prevention

without CO2 the

earth would be as cold as

the moon. In the absence of

green house effect the earth

surface temperature would

be as low as -18oc .z

OZONE DEPLETION

Page 10: Green house and ozon depleation

The ozone layer forms naturaly in the stratospere , where ozone and

oxygen gas are always converting into each other contineously reapplyin the earth’s sun

INTRODUCTION

1. How the ozone layer forms and protect. Ozone is a bluish gas that is formed by 3 atoms of oxygen. When found on the surface of the planet ozone is considered a dangerous pollutant. The highest region of the stratosphere contain about 90% of all ozone.

MECHANISM:-

Page 12: Green house and ozon depleation

Cfc’s which are man made gradually rise up into the ozone layer. Where u.v light breaks the components apart which release chlorine. A chlorine atom can steal an oxygen atom from an ozone molecule creating oxygen gas and chlorine monoxide (Clo) which effectively destroys ozone molecule. CFcl

the radical clo. Can initiate a series of chain reactions which lead to destruction of upto 100,000 molecules of O3 without being destroyed itself in the process

1. Effect on marine organisms –phytoplankton and zooplankton “Plankton” are the collection small or microscopic organism including plants and animals. Fish are highly dependent upon phytoplankton as a food source. Since about 30% of all protein for human consumption comes from the sea. Pure water is transparent to u.v radiation. It is the presence of light scattering material that cause attenuation typically, there is about a 40% attenuation of u.v light at 0.5 meters bellow the surface resing to an 80% attenuation at 1.5 meter phytoplankton are highly sensitive to u.v light and that even existing levels of u.v radiation are highly toxic.

UV-B EFFECT ON TERESTRIAL PLANT :- UV-B EFFECT ON AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS MOBILETY AND ORIENTATION MECHANISMS ARE IMPAIRED BY UV-B RADIATION. BECAUSE MOST ORGANISMS DO NOT POSSESS UV-B RECEPTORS.

3rd EFFECT

4th EFFECTHARMFUL EFFECT OF INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS These chemicals include extremely toxic substance

Which can cause allergies, damage vital brain, liver kidney and reproductive organs. And it is amazing that we know nothing about the toxic effect of 80% of the chemicals used.

Phosphate fertilizer factories and thermal power plant generate large quantities of conventional solid wastes which are stored near the sites and cause pollution of soil.

How a hole forms in the ozone :- CFC’s contribute to the formation of the ozone. Chlorine and bromine are both substances that can destroy ozone.

CONCLUSION :- It is estimated that 25% of the people born by the year 2075 will die due to the cancer caused due to the explorations to

ultraviolet radiation.
