Objective: • To promote and uphold school spirit, unity and pride. • To represent our school to the highest degree. • To set an example of good behavior and sportsmanship at all times. • To promote friendship among team members. • To promote development lifelong values and skills.

Cheerleaders know that teamwork and discipline are keys to the success of the team and are essential life skills. Cheerleaders are dedicated to promoting school spirit, enthusiasm, and positive winning attitude. The manner in which a cheerleader conducts her/himself in any situation reflects directly on the entire team and school. It is recognized that Rules and Regulations are necessary to maintain squad moral, individual disciple, and effective learning. Consistent enforcement of these Rules and Regulations is also necessary to ensure the safety of each team member. Eligibility:

• Cheerleader and parent must have signed permission slip on file stating they are aware of the amount of time expense, commitment and responsibility required and expected for a successful season before try-outs.

• Cheerleaders must have a medical physical on file by June 1, 2017 • Cheerleaders must read and understand the GHS Athletic Handbook for athletic

eligibility. Specifically, drug/alcohol use, grades and attendance. http://s3.amazonaws.com/vnn-aws-sites/1451/files/2014/08/Green-Athletic-Handbook1.pdf

• Varsity, JV and Freshmen squads will be determined by the try-out/evaluation rubric (page 6), past performances, experience, and school academic performance.

• Seniors can only make varsity. • Cheerleading is like no other sport in that we have no substitute team members.

One person being absent affects the entire squad. Absences must always be avoided.

• Calendars will be provided with practices, games and events. Please work around this when making appointments or other schedules.

• Non-school related activities will be considered unexcused with understanding with ‘give and take’ between all involved.

• Cheerleaders may not participate in any practices or game if they are absent from school. If you attend school all day, you are expected to attend practice and all scheduled events that follow.

• Communicate with the coaches prior to missing any event. Using the Remind app or speaking in person is the best way.

Football/Basketball/Competition Season: • There is an option on the Contract (page 8) to try-out for Football, Basketball or

both. • A decision for football and basketball season must be made during tryouts. For

example, if you decide to only try-out for football season, there will not be the option to try-out for basketball season again if you later decide you want to cheer.

• If you quit football and/or basketball season during the 2017-2018 school year, you are then ineligible to tryout the following year (2018-2019). No exceptions.

• Competing is up to the coach’s discretion for the 2017-2018 season. If you are interested in competing you must make that selection on your contract (page 8)

Practices: • Cheerleaders will report, appropriately dressed, and ready to practice at the

designated place and time. • No jewelry anywhere, Safety first! • Hair must be out of face in a secure ponytail. • No eating, gum chewing, or cell phones allowed! • 100% effort at all times. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from

practice…per coaches’ discretion.

Games: • All cheerleaders must be at all home games 1 hour prior to the start of the game.

This will include stretching, practicing and detail review. (This is subject to change based on coaches’ discretion)

• When the school band is present, cheerleaders will perform sideline dances. • When a cheer or chant is not in progress, cheerleaders will stand in formation

with hands locked behind their backs. • Show respect during the National Anthem and the other teams’ fight song and

lineup. • Bathroom breaks taken only before, half-time, or after the game. • During basketball games, the non- cheering squad will sit on the bleachers in

front of active cheerleaders to cheer along and show support. • No doing homework and no cell phones (texting) allowed. • No visiting with male or female friends during the game. • A suspended cheerleader will sit in the bleachers with the coaches/other

cheerleaders in uniform during the game.

Expectations: • All rules must be followed that are outlined in the GHS Athletic Handbook, the

OHSAA, and this packet. • Cooperate with and show respect to coaches, team members, officials, school

administrator, GHS and opposing schools. • Promote unity within the squad. • Prepare to give 100% effort at all times. • Varsity Squad: It is your responsibility to assist, teach, and be positive role

models. You must continually improve your skills. Varsity requires participation in youth camp, fundraisers, assisting with the elementary character and junior high development. Remember: you are to be a positive role model. Young girls look up to you.

• JV & Freshmen Squads: It is your responsibility to be a positive role model, to learn from and respect upperclassmen and assist in teaching. You must be able to accept critique and continually improve your skills.

• As a GHS Cheerleader, it is your responsibility to lead/encourage positive cheers and, as much as possible, to discourage derogatory responses from GHS fans. It is about sportsmanship.

• An effort is made to ensure all the uniforms fit appropriately. Due to a limited budget, not every uniform will fit all the girls perfectly. Each cheerleader may have alterations done on the uniform as long as the uniform does not change from the original design. This is done at the Cheerleader’s expense. Please no cutting of the material.

• The uniform is to be worn only at games, competitions, and/or pep sessions. It is the property of Green High School and will be at the cheerleader’s expense to replace.

• Uniform must be kept neat and clean. This includes socks, shoes, and bow. Please wash uniforms in cold water and hang to dry.

• Basketball shoes are to be worn indoors only. • Make-up is to be tasteful and natural. • No nail polish while in uniform unless it is a neutral color or French tip. • Hair is to be up, secure, and out of face. You should not have to “redo” your hair

during cheer time. • No visible tattoos will be allowed while in uniform. • Cheerleaders should maintain reasonable standards of appearance. Remember

that cheerleaders are always viewed as representatives of GHS, even when they are not in uniform.

• No public displays of affection while in uniform including kissing and hand-holding. Remember people are watching you and young girls look up to you.

In order to become a Green High School Cheerleader, you must be willing to make a

commitment to cheerleading, which will demand a lot of time, effort, and energy.

Before you make the commitment of representing Green High School as a

cheerleader, you should be aware of the demands and responsibilities it will require

of you and your family. If you and your parents agree to make this commitment,

please complete this form and return it to Coach Richards or Coach Groholy on May

Parents, please be aware that cheerleading has evolved into a very complex and

athletic activity that does involve the risk of serious injury. Safety is our first

concern, and although precautions are always taken, accidents can still happen. The

very nature of the activity, cheerleading and gymnastics carry a risk of physical

injury. No matter how careful the participant and coach are, how many spotters

are used, or what landing surface is used, the risk cannot be eliminated. The risk of

injury includes minor injuries such as muscle pulls, dislocations, and broken bones.

The risk also includes catastrophic injuries such as permanent paralysis or even

death from landing or falls on the back, neck, or head. I understand these risks

and will not hold Green High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case

of accident or injury at any time.

Parents should also be aware of the financial responsibilities that go with being a

cheerleader. Each cheerleader will be responsible for the following expenses:
