The Green Growth Opportunity for the UAE

“Our goal from this national initiative is clear, that is, to build an economy that protects the environment as well as an environment that

supports the growth of the economy. We in the UAE... are striving to build a diversified economy based on knowledge and innovation, through which

we can provide excellent employment opportunities to our citizens. Through this, we can protect our natural and environmental resources, and strengthen our competitive position in global markets, especially in the areas of renewable energy products and technologies on the green

economy”

“We have come a long way in the United Arab Emirates for the past few years to meet the challenges of energy and climate change, within the framework of the ambitious national vision and clear strategic plans

depends increasingly on knowledge, innovation and creativity, based on the diversification of energy sources and promote energy

efficiency and conservation. To this end, the UAE adopted a variety of policies and initiatives such as: the development of the oil

industry to minimize negative impacts by adoption of modern technology and best practices, options for renewable energy, alternative energy, carbon capture and storage techniques, adopting criteria for green buildings and sustainable transport, national standards to promote energy efficiency, promoting awareness of the importance of energy

conservation and reduction of carbon footprint resulting from various types of activities, and finally [this] green economy

approach is a holistic framework for all stakeholder and initiatives relating to sustainable development in the UAE.”

Global Green Growth InstituteIs an international, treaty-based organization, working with partners in the public and private sector in emerging and developing countries. The Institute has been established by several forward-thinking governments to maximize the opportunity for “bottom-up” (i.e. country – and business-led) progress on responses to climate change and other environmental challenges within core public and economic policies and business strategies.

Established in 2010 with the support of like-minded Green Growth pioneers such as governments of Republic of Korea, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates and later in 2012, turned into a treaty-based international organization of which signatories and members are 22 countries. GGGI currently operates 36 projects in developing countries all over the world.

Green Growth Context in the UAE

The UAE Vision 2021, which was adopted in February 2010 by Their Highnesses the Rulers of the Emirates, has been a vital compass for the nation to steer a course among diverse future challenges including those to family ties, economic competitiveness, national identities, health, education, environment and well-being. Building upon the Vision 2021, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched in January 2012 a long-term national initiative to build green economy in the UAE under the name “UAE Green Growth Strategy” with a slogan “Green Economy for Sustainable Development”. Under this initiative underpinned by the Vision 2021, the UAE seeks to become a global hub and a successful model for the green economy so as to enhance the country’s competitiveness and sustainability of its development and preserve its environment for future generations.

As the first step of this initiative, Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW), in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and with the technical support from Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), led the development of Implementation plan for UAE Green Growth Strategy which outlines a pathway for the UAE’s development incorporating economic, environmental and social long-term goals. The outcomes from the developed implementation plan was a range of concrete programs and projects and clear a roadmap for actions formed. The three federal entities, plan to move forward this process by facilitating knowledge sharing and capacity enhancement of stakeholders. In this context, building on the two successful workshops on Green Growth Knowledge Sharing (one in November 2012 and the other March 2013), the third workshop is now offered with the aim to advance “how to” knowledge and its application by learning from stakeholders.

• The third Green Growth Knowledge Sharing Workshop aims to provide an opportunity to advance “how to” knowledge and its application by practitioners who will carry forward the Green Growth agenda. The third workshop focuses on two prioritized aspects of Green Growth implementation; “realizing quick win opportunities ” and “unlocking market opportunities”. Both the themes will provide a balanced perspective between policies and market responses so that participants can be enlightened on the linkage between policies, technologies and the emergence of green business models; and how policies and public support could assist green value creation.

• Participants will learn about promising Green Growth solutions with particular focus on “quick wins” from clean energy deployment, sustainable water management, waste to resources, green transportation and buildings (Day One: “Realizing Quick Wins”). Participants will also learn about how to leverage technology and innovation to build distinctive competencies at firm level, sustainable business management, successful green business models applicable to the UAE, various modes of green entrepreneurship and SME financing emerging in the UAE, and how to profit from socially responsible business practices (Day Two: “Unlocking Green Growth Opportunities for Business”). While concluding the workshop, all participants will come together and discuss the results from key discussions throughout the two days.

• The workshop will employ: i) systemic training by global and local experts; ii) knowledge exchange among peer groups; and iii) cross-cultivation across policy makers, business leaders and experts over the intensive two-day gathering.

Overall lessons learnt from the workshop by participants are expected as:

o Inter-linkages between policies, technologies and the emergence of green business models; how policies and public support lead to innovative green business models and value creation

o In-depth understanding of key tools and solutions and their applications

o Exposure to practical examples on key tools and solutions and their case studies on why some were successful while others experienced difficulties

o Learning from peers through exchange of views and group exercises

o General understanding of each selected topics
