Our membership fee is $25 annually. All quilters are welcome!Page 1
From the President What a great start to our year with
Peggy Evan’s “A Revolution in
Quilts.” It helps us to see where we are going when we know where we’ve
been. I find quilt history very fascinating.
This month we have “Pixelated Quilt Portraits” with Matt Moffett. This is a technique I appreciate but
have never tried. Looking forward to this program.
Classes – Do you like to take classes? It is amazing all the little tidbits you can pick up when you take a class. Someone may have a little hint that can make a process
or technique easier. Have you ever heard someone wish they could take a class
but it would be a strain financially? We have designated funds for scholarships. The guild will pay half of the class fee. Scholarships are also available for membership. Please share this
with them. Have them get in touch with me.
Happy stitching!

Committees. Kristy Howell has taken on the back-breaking work of birthday cakes for the day group. Donna Herron will slave over the new member packets for 2019. Phyllis Enos has graciously
volunteered to coordinate door prizes for our day group. If you want to contact Phyllis, you will need to actually call her and speak
to her. She is one of the heroic few who have not surrendered their independence to technology. Thank you, again, to these ladies and everyone who volunteers
their time for our guild!

Doohickey Drawing When you see Tina Deaton, give her a good congratulatory shout. “Steeeellla,” January's Doohickey, now lives with her! But there’s still light in the future! The February Doohickey is a Cutterpillar Glow Premium. “This is an excellent, well-designed light board with many possible applications. The Cutterpillar Glow Premium rechargeable light board has three well-chosen brightness levels suitable for tracing using a wide-range of overlay material densities. The device is streamlined, elegant and lightweight and includes a built-in lithium battery rated for up to four hours of operation at the lower brightness levels or one hour at full brightness. It is supplied with a PVC "self-healing" plastic mat, which is printed with an inch-dimensioned 12”x16” working surface. The supplied mat has a sticky rear surface so it stays in place on the light board. Replacement PVC mats are available from Cutterpillar or Amazon. A heavy, tempered-glass mat is also optionally available with the same printed, inch-dimensioned pattern.” (Customer review on Amazon.) Patti Klein

Hearts and Hands will meet on February 2 from 10 until 2 at John Calvin Presbyterian
church as usual. We need all kinds of help cutting batting
and putting backing fabric with tops. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to help.
Thanks to all who took quilts for quilting on
Thursday night. Sorry I didn’t have any for Friday morning.
We did get several back all finished at last month's meeting. Great work ladies!! See you
in February (weather permitting of course).

Hearts & Hands
Thanks to a very generous donation of quilting supplies and books, we’ve added a number of brand new books to our guild library (almost doubling our number of “Art Quilt” books!). So, Art Quilters, get ready to check these out: •Lovely Landscape Quilts –
Using Strings & Scraps to Piece and Appliqué Scenic Quilts by Cathy Geier. This book takes up where Karen Eckmeier left off, with a wonderful variety of beautiful landscape quilts, with paper patterns included. Several artists are featured along with easy-to-follow instructions and tips, and there’s even a word about copyright restrictions.
•The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting – 1,000+ Step-by-Step Illustrations by Linda Seward. This truly IS the ultimate guide for art quilters (and all the rest of us too!). I couldn’t possibly list even half of the topics in the index —every technique imaginable (with great illustrations on almost every page) for making art quilts. Even included are exercises for quilters, sewing machine care and mainte-nance, rotary cutting and foundation piecing instruc-tions, and a large section on machine quilting on both domestic and long-arm machines. It’s a treasure!
• Impressionist Appliqué – Exploring Value & Design to Create Artistic Quilts by Grace Errea & Meridith Osterfeld. This book is definitely not for the beginning appliqué-er! But if you’re ready to “bump it up” to the next level, this book will show you how. Instructions are easy to follow with lots of tips for success, and paper patterns are included for you to create your own masterpiece. (Find this book in the “Appliqué” section.)
• The Complete Photo Guide to Felting by Ruth Lane. Not for everyone, but if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at wool felting, this book has more than 800 large format color photos to get you inspired and show you how. It’s “the essential reference for novice and expert fiber artists” and has “all you need to know about wet felting, needle felting, and nuno felting” with “hundreds of felting tips and ideas and detailed step-by-step instructions for all tech-niques.” The book is fabulous, and it certainly would make for a fun workshop! (Find this book in the “Primitives & Wool” section of the carts.)
Be sure to “check ‘em out” and also look for other recent
additions to our library!

Quilt Tulsa 2020
Page 4 February 2019
Let’s Talk . . . This is Jan Kendall and Nancy Ashcroft, your Quilt Tulsa
2020 Co-Chairs. Every other year, the Green Country Quilters
Guild (that’s you), puts on a quilt show to raise money. This
money is used to fund guild programs (those wonderful
speakers/workshops and all the expenses involved in doing
so) for two years.
Last year, the income from two years of working on the
quilt show was $5,846. This is not enough to cover the
upcoming program expenses and the guild will be dipping
into their savings to cover the shortfall. This is ok for one
cycle. HOWEVER, income for the 2020 Quilt Show is
projected to be even less. This means that, as a fundraiser,
the Quilt Show is no longer the cash cow it needs to be.
At the quilt show, our expenses keep rising and our
attendance keeps declining.
It takes a great number of people pulling together and
working behind the scenes to make a successful quilt show.
Your quilt show committee members work very hard. It is
not unusual for us to work for two years and then have to
take a week of vacation to work at the show. When we
see that only 28% of our members entered a quilt, and
around 35% volunteered to help at the show, it becomes
questionable as to whether the Quilt Show is “WORTH” it
to the membership.
Your committee has agreed to host Quilt Tulsa 2020.
However, future shows are on the line. The show
committee (WITH YOUR HELP) will do everything we can
think of to reduce expenses, boost attendance, and maximize
profit in other areas.
Depending on the participation of the membership, and
profit from 2020, this may be our last show.
So, please (pretty please), keep this in mind when you are
asked (pleaded with), to fill a hole or do a job or volunteer or
enter a quilt. Your guild depends on YOU.
It’s a parrot. Nature’s color palette for your quilts.
A hot iron alone doesn’t always get all the creases and wrinkles out of your fabric — even when you use steam. Pressing sprays like Mary Ellen’s Best Press really do help smooth out stubborn wrinkles, but they aren’t cheap! Luckily, there’s a better option: making your own pressing spray. The recipe is simplicity itself. The ingredients are inexpensive items you can find at the grocery store, and the cost is a small fraction of what you’d pay for commercial sprays.
Supplies List • One gallon of distilled water. • One cup cheap vodka (the cheapest
you can find). • One-half cup liquid starch. • Spray bottle(s). This recipe makes a
bit more than a gallon of spray, so you’ll need more than one bottle to hold it all.
• Optional: essential oil such as laven-der to add a pleasant scent. If you decide to add scent, use sparingly.
Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl or pail, then pour into the spray bottle. Voila! You’re ready to press.
Make Your Own Pressing Spray!

The Pioneer Area Quilters Guild is again having their annual Quilt Market! This is the Fourth Annual Quilting and Sewing Shop and Swap Meet being held March 16, 2019. It is an indoor
event and will be held rain or shine. Only quilting and sewing items will be at the sale. This is a specialty sale and NOT a rummage
sale. Expect to find just about anything that you can think of for quilting or sewing, from fat quarters to Dream Machines and everything in between. Event to be held at Unity Gym, 1908 East Woodland Road, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Sellers are urged to reserve selling spaces in
advance of the event for $25.00 per space. Quilting or sewing related goods only, such as, all of those pre-cuts, kits yardage, notions, books,
machines, and quilts that have overrun your closets and homes!
For more info and booth reservations, please call Jeannie at 580-716-4724 or email [email protected].

For February we have Matt Moffett, a well-known local artist. His presentation will be “Pixilated Quilt Portraits.” You can see some of his work at m2studioportraits.com. We can’t wait to see his quilts! He is probably best known for his work with pets. March will bring us Leo Ransom with “Portrait Techniques in Quilting.” Leo is a mixed media and quilt artist. March will also bring us our first workshop, “2 Fabric Portrait Art-Silhouette Class.” In this class you will learn how to use two fabrics to make a portrait. This class will definitely help you decide if there is an artist in you. It’s a half-day class. Our April presenter will be Marie Polk with both programs “Fibonacci in Quilting.” The Friday afternoon workshop will be “Fibonacci Facets” Fibonacci is a math term based on the following: “The Fibonacci sequence is a set of numbers that starts with a one or a zero followed by a one and proceeds based on the rule that each number is equal to the sum of the proceeding two numbers.” Don’t worry! I don’t think that we have to do a lot of math, but the class quilt is cut using this principle. The May program will be Linda Hertensteiner as she tells us more about her travels to Costa Rica and quilting with “The Flowers of the Green Country.” So many members have contributed supplies over the years, we know you would like to see more about how they were used. Also in May, we will have a show and tell of your Charm Quilts from the Blast Your Stash Challenge. Remember that a charm quilt is a quilt in which each piece is a different fabric (exceptions being the border and the binding - those can be different fabrics or one). Your quilt can be any size but must be completed! In June, Donna Robbins will talk to us about “barn quilts” in her lecture “Barn Quilt Blocks.” She will also teach a Friday afternoon class “Painting Barn Quilt Blocks.” Everyone will paint a quilt pattern on a 2 foot by 2 foot wooden board that can be displayed outside or inside. If you haven’t heard of the barn quilts movement, you will get lots of information by Googling the subject.
July programs will be a presentation from Quilts of Valor. There are so many pretty patterns out there for Quilts of Valor. Let’s think about making some! Due to health issues, Elsie Campbell has been forced to cancel her commit-ments for the next year. We are in the process of con-tacting another speaker for August. In September, Cynthia Regone will present “Kick It Up a Notch” on Thursday night and “Mixed Technique . . . It’s just like gumbo!” Friday morning. Friday after-noon workshop is a wool project called “Market Days.” The full day Saturday workshop will be “Strip Pieced Stars.” This cotton quilt is another one to use your leftover strips!! The October speaker is Sherry Meeks from Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Thursday night lecture will be “Decorating With Quilts!” This program will look at some fun alternatives that will allow you to show off your love for quilting and sewing by displaying your treasures in unique ways. Friday morning we will hear “From the Golden Age of Quilting to Losing the Jelly Ross Race.” The 1930s experienced a quilt revival in part due to the Chicago World’s Fair and Sears. So how did we go from that to jelly roll racing? See what else you can do with jelly rolls. November 8-10 will be a “free-sew” guild retreat at Camp Egan. You will bring whatever you choose to work on. Get some of those projects finished and have fun with friends!! More information will be provided later, but we wanted you to be able to put it on your calendar. We are planning on this being an annual event on the second weekend in November. As we discussed in the meetings, we are trying a new method of workshop enrollment. The workshops for the year (with the exception of August) are all listed on one form. You can sign up for all that you would like to attend now or some now and others later. The form is included on the next page. The first day for mailing is February 1st.

"The Ridge Quilters' Guild from Paradise, California has been overwhelmed by the generous and heartfelt support
offered and given by the nation's quilting community. Many guilds have asked how they can help. We believe the best thing you can do, is help us help ourselves. We would like to
invite you to help us by purchasing tickets for our 2019 Opportunity Quilt, "Sweet Surrender" which was saved
from the fire. Sweet Surrender pattern is by Sue Cody, appliquéd and pieced by guild members using Kaffe Fassett fabrics and
quilted by member, Marsha Haunschild. A majority of our guild members lost their homes, quilts and supplies in the
fire and our storage facility was also destroyed. Thankfully, our biennial quilt show was held not long before the fire and we will be able to replace our quilt racks and other
necessities before we need them for our next show. Ticket purchases can be made by check sent to
Ridge Quilters Guild, PO Box 1688, Paradise, CA 95967. Tickets are $1.00 each, 6 for $5.00 or 13 for
$10.00. Please include your email address so that we can send you confirma-tion
of your ticket purchase and your ticket numbers. To help defray costs you will not receive ticket stubs so please keep your check as your proof of donation for tax purposes. The drawing for this beautiful and hope-filled quilt will be on
October 15, 2019 at our general meeting. Please visit us at ridgequiltersguild.org. Thank you for your continued support.”
Help for Paradise, CA, Quilting Fire Survivors
From Cindy Needham:
“Hi Everyone! As you all know I have been heavily involved in helping our quilting fire survivors from the tragic Paradise fire in November. I received a letter from the Ridge Quilters Guild in Paradise regarding opportunity tickets for a quilt that was saved from the fire. This is yet another way that we can help. Their letter is below.
Thank you! Cindy”

This month we feature Linda Moody from Tulsa. She joined
our group last fall and is new to the world of quilting. She is also
a member of Tulsa’s Fiber Artists of Oklahoma (FAO), like several others in our guild. For the past
eight years, her art has centered around bead weaving, bead
embroidery, etc. Linda started down that path by doing straight stringing in 2004. She became interested in fabrics after joining FAO and loves sewing by hand.
Currently FAO is doing an art challenge that started in October of last year and Linda is participating by piecing fabrics
and sewing them by hand. She is inspired by her night time dreams and has kept a journal of them since August of 1996.
She uses those
dreams for inspiration in
her art challenge pieces. This is
her wonderful art studio.

Shadows - Please remember to keep the following guild members in your thoughts and prayers: Betty Fisher, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery in December; Phyllis Smith, who is still recovering from a heart procedure on January 8; Rose Conkwright, who is still recovering from reconstructive surgery on December 18; Carol Guertin, who has had heart problems and surgery in the recent past but is doing well; Elsie Campbell, who had extensive foot reconstruc-tion surgery recently (along with some other temporary health issues) that has forced her to cancel her scheduled program in August; And the family of Lois Sweetko, who passed away on January. 18.
Sunshine - I’m off to Costa Rica on Feb. 9 (returning on the 16th), taking your generous donations, love, and prayers with me for “The Flowers of the Green Country.” At the May guild meetings, I will be presenting a brief history of our impact on the lives of these women over the past 8 years. I will also be bringing to those meetings a large collection of appreciation gifts that I’ve received from The Flowers over the years, which I would like to share with anyone wanting a remembrance of our la Carpio sisters.

19th Century Basket Quilts on Display
The Stillwater History Museum at the Sheerar is featuring a traveling quilt show from the American Quilt Study Group, “The Study of 19th Century Basket Quilts.” The exhibit features 25 quilts made by members of the American Quilt Study Group. The Stillwater History Museum has hosted a number of quilt shows from the AQSG over the years, including Civil War, Colonial Revival, and Star Quilts. Some of the quilts included in this show have no true pattern, providing a challenge for quilters to figure out how to create similar designs. One of the quilts was inspired by one made in the late 1800s by Sarah Doty Rosseel Passage, a minister’s wife in a small town in Pennsylvania. Sarah’s diary tells of taking her black dresses to a local dressmaker to try to make them more stylish. The colorful silk basket quilt that she made, provided true inspiration for the basket quilt with a crazy quilt style. The exhibit will be rounded out with baskets, needlework examples and tools from the Stillwater History Museum’s collection, including pieces donated to the museum by the Sheerar, Enix, Fenimore, and Murray families. Handiwork pieces include lace, quilt squares, cross stitch, pin cushions, and more. The exhibit will stay open through February 10, 2019. The museum is located at 702 S. Duncan. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Admission is free.

Lois Sweetko
The sympathy of our guild is
extended to the family of Lois Sweetko, who passed away on January 18 at the
age of 71, following a courageous four-year battle with thyroid cancer and lymphoma. Lois was a long-time
member of our guild, attending mostly the day meetings. She was an avid
quilter, crafter, and seamstress and was also a great cook, baker, and puppeteer. But, more importantly, she will be remembered for her kind and caring demeanor, her beautiful ever-
present smile, and for her love for her family (especially her grandchildren) and friends. Lois was a member of the Sew It Seams
stitch group, where she taught us how to make a number of things (my favorite being the “Log Cabin Santa” ornament). Please remember to keep Lois’ husband Steve and their entire family in your prayers in the
weeks and months ahead as they mourn her passing. Simple Friendships II, the newest book by Kim Diehl and Jo Morton,
is being placed in the guild library in loving memory of Lois. It incorporates the unmistakable country style and color-choices of Simple
Friendships (also in our guild library) that
have made these two authors and friends a winning combination. You can find this book
in the “Memorial Book” section of our library carts. Be sure to check it out and, when you do, think of the sweet friendships we’ve
made within our guild and the beautiful memories we have of those who have gone
on before us — until we see them again.
