Thirty Years Young - Today and Yesterday

The economy is down, and the environmental jobs market is extremely tight. Recent college graduates, especially those with advanced degrees, are extremely frustrated that they cannot land a job in their field. Dependence on foreign oil is a threat to national security, and use of North America’s own petroleum reserves has led to a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There is a demand for both sharply improved energy efficiency and development of a national renewable energy mission.

2010? Yes. But it was the same story in 1980, and the Environmental Career Center was there helping people find the best job for their skills and desires. The Environmental Career Center was established in June 1980 to serve environmental and natural resources jobs seekers and employers nationwide.

Why did we start our environmental jobs service? I wish I could say that the main reason at that time was to help the environment. It wasn’t.

Thirty years ago I was one of the many wildlife biology graduates who applied to hundreds of jobs with very little response from employers that were overburdened with applications. I was fortunate because I had a job working as a temporary GS-5 Biological Technician for the Army Corps of Engineers wetlands program.

Having a young family of my own, I needed a little more than a temporary, entry-level position that had no benefits. When I thought about another part-time job to make ends meet, I decided to try to get paid for what I do best - researching job openings and applying for jobs.

We started slowly by compiling a list of a lot of job openings for friends who were looking for employment. They connected, and got hired. Success!

In the beginning, we reused an old typewriter and prepared the first national environmental and natural resources jobs newsletter from a kitchen table in a Minneapolis apartment. Universities and recent college graduates subscribed to both our Registers Announcement (for federal jobs) and the Jobs Announcement. We published the Employment Guide to Federal Opportunities in the Natural Sciences.

On June 10, 1980 we published Volume 1, No. 1 of the Registers Announcement, and our environmental and natural resources job information and career counseling service was launched. Did it work? Yes! Many subscribers contacted us to thank us for the information that helped them launch a career of their dreams. Universities loved the comprehensive single source of the job listings students and alumni wanted.

Since I was in a temporary job, I applied to jobs in our newsletters. Through my applying to the listings in August 1980 issue, I was offered three permanent jobs in one week in October with the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, Corps of Engineers in Texas, and Department of Agriculture in Oklahoma.

The Registers Announcement and Jobs Announcement became the Environmental Careers World newsletter in 1994. The Environmental Careers World newsletter later became the National Environmental Employment Report newspaper. In 2006, that newspaper became the first national green jobs publication, the Green Careers Journal. You may have notice the high caliber, well researched career articles that Sabine Rogers has prepared since she joined us a year ago.

The Environmental Career Center continues to have the privilege of conducting informative career seminars at annual conferences of professional associations. For instance, see the article in this issue by Lauren Grochmal about the informative National Association of Environmental Professionals Green Careers Seminar recently held in Atlanta.

ECC launched the first environmental niche job board on the web on Earth Day in 1995. Monster, Online Career Center, Job Web, and Career Mosaic were some of the other job boards back then. Monster looked too goofy to catch on. We were excited to be way ahead of any other environmental job service. Only problem was that many

Another piece of the job seeker puzzle that many pass over (in addition to professional associations) are the variety of careers seminars that take place at universities, community colleges, career training organizations, and in this case at professional organizations. The one we will recap now took place at the 35th annual conference of the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) in Atlanta on April 27. This is the fourth year that the Environmental Career Center (ECC) has successfully coordinated this seminar for NAEP. Perhaps I am a little biased, as I helped coordinate efforts for the seminar, but even ECC director, John Esson, concurs that this was one of the best career seminars we have ever conducted. There was such a wealth of useful and realistic information and advice, I’m not sure how it will all fit into this little article. Here it goes.

We brought in five personable and knowledgeable speakers that included professionals from the private consulting, government, and military sectors, as well as an environmental recruiter and the assistant dean of career services at one of the most established environmental schools in the country. The panel included Carolyn Henn, Manager of Talent Acquisition for Apex Companies, LLC; Pam Swingle, Manager of the EPA Region 4 Office of Pollution Prevention and Innovation; Manette Messenger, Sustainability Program Manager for the US Army Installation Management Command (INCOM), Southeast Region; Ronald Bass, Senior Regulatory specialist with ICF International; and Karen Kirchof, Assistant Dean of Career Services for the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University.

The panel started with Carolyn Henn from Apex Companies. As a recruiter for a leading environmental consulting firm, she had a lot of specific information that applies to not only applying for a position within her firm, but also to other environmental consulting firms. First, she noted that strong writing skills are a must (how many times have you already heard this?) Do not overlook the importance of maintaining this skill set. Secondly, you need to be able to manage or work on multiple projects concurrently. Do you understand the cost impact to clients and can you produce high quality work while also helping to market the firm’s services to potential new clients? Not only should you be able to complete the technical work on a daily basis but you should

also be participating in activities that help grow the business.

Carolyn highlighted several key items that she looks for in an entry-level resume, noting a few that give some candidates an edge over others. She looks for practical experience. Do you have volunteer or internship experience in the field to which you are applying? Do you have any specialized training or certifications? Is your resume free of grammar and punctuation errors? Are your thoughts organized and did you send a writing sample along with your resume? You should provide strong references and present yourself as career minded, not that your just looking for your next job. Lastly, are you actively involved in networking, like in a professional association? All of these characteristics are important for a standout resume. Having experience in your field of interest and providing an error free and well organized resume and cover letter will give you an edge.

Next Pam Swingle spoke about preparing for a career in a government agency, specifically the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Pam did not come into the EPA with a typical environmental background. Over the years she worked and created her own background in areas that interested her. This has spring boarded

her and allowed her to move up through the agency where she now manages an office focused on developing the recycling markets. In order to get into the EPA, she recommends obtaining an internship. However, remember that these can be very competitive so if you are turned down, apply again.

Two important websites she mentioned are epa.gov/careers and usajobs.gov where you should always keep your resume up-to-date. In keeping your resume fresh for each position you apply for, you should read the job announcement carefully and note any key words or phrases used in the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA’s) section. Then use these keywords or phrases to re-write your resume using the exact words from the announcement. Because HR people are usually the ones reading your resume, they may not pick up on a volunteer experience that fulfills a requirement on your resume. If you include keywords from the jobs announcement in your resume, you are more likely to grab the attention of the recruiter. (Of course, do not include information about your credentials that is untrue.)

Manette Messenger’s perspective was very different from most on the panel because I think most students do not think about careers in sustainability within the US Army or other branches of the military. However, this sector of the government is setting the pace for a many sustainability measures, most notably in green building. Manette mentioned USAjobs.gov as a place to start your search but to also look at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Engineering (ORISE). ORISE hires interns for the Army environmental program. Go to www.environmentalcareer.com and click on job board, then Find a Job to search and apply for current ORISE opportunities. And while, as she says, the civil service is really, really hard

to get into, you should “NGU NNGU.” Apparently, this is a motto when trying to forge your career path into the Army. Even though you have applied (perhaps already 5 times) you must Never Give Up, Never Never Give Up. Additionally, starting out at entry level is easier. If you are interested in sustainability careers, focus on a career field such as architecture, urban planning, transportation, materials, or engineering, and not just the environment alone because “sustainability is about HOW we do everything we do.” She forecasts that traditional environmental jobs will decrease within the Army because they are getting better at building in “green” measures and that sustainability jobs will be focused on specific activities, as mentioned previously, and not simply stand alone efforts like in the past. She wrapped up by telling us that in her 32 years with the Army she has never been bored with her job, which is rare I think these days.

Ron Bass spoke next and maintained the perspective of a life long career in environmental consulting. One of the key points he made was about the stability of this industry, how environmental consulting will continue to grow because traditional environmental concerns will continue to be important and need to be addressed. Additionally, as the greening of our society continues to take off, this will only mean more opportunities for environmental professionals in new non-

Bob Dylan, circa 1960’s - The Times They Are a–Changing, and maybe they really are. This spring, a disastrous coal mining accident in West Virginia and oil rig explosion off the coast of Louisiana have made many question the wisdom, and human cost, of searching for and extracting fossil fuels. However, the positive that has come from these devastating losses is a historical and political window of opportunity, one that rarely comes about much anymore and one that can change the course of a country. Amazingly, a wind farm of 130 400-foot turbines was approved just days after the rig explosion for the Massachusetts coast, and federal funding was announced the day before Earth Day for Retrofit Ramp-up Awards, allowing states and regions to invest in retrofitting homes and businesses for energy efficiency.

This political window of opportunity has also created new careers and small business opportunities. Specifically there are many choices within the energy efficiency and renewable energy sectors. You could become certified to conduct energy audits that will be required for homes and businesses to qualify for the retrofit loans and grants. You could become an installer or maintenance technician for the new off shore turbines. How exciting would that be working 400 feet above the ocean, 6-12 miles off shore? You could help manufacture the blades and engines that will help to harness the wind’s energy or you might even learn to connect the electricity generated to a region’s power grid.

A few of you may already be prepared to jump into these jobs, while the majority will likely need new or updated training. Training providers for these positions include community colleges, technical schools, unions, and universities. Colleges and technical high schools offer basic electrical and electronics technology programs, while electrical unions can offer apprenticeships programs. Universities offer options for research in all aspects of renewable energy. More and more community colleges offer degrees, certifications, and industry certifications, as well as continuing education for contractors, tradesmen, building auditors, and building code inspectors already in the field. One of the first schools in the country to develop and successfully implement wind energy curriculum is Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC). ILCC offers a two-year Associates Degree in Applied Science in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology. This program provides hands-on, real-life experiences as part of the training as well as requiring that students receive training in construction, maintenance, and operation of wind turbines in order to be prepared for entry-level positions.

Training options for the energy efficiency industry include several popular industry certifications. Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified professionals are specialists in their chosen field and work on “existing homes and commercial buildings.” This certification is based on “house-as-a-system” and includes several designations that you can specialize in. Designations, or specializations, include

building analysts, envelope, air sealing installer & crew chief, dense-pack insulation installer & crew chief, manufactured housing, heating, air conditioning and heat pump and multifamily.

The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Rater, a Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) certification, analyzes new home construction plans relating to energy efficiency and performs onsite inspections such as blower door and duct testing.

Congress recently passed the HOME STAR Energy Retrofit Act, a national weatherization incentive program. This initiative establishes a $6 billion rebate program to help homeowners invest in improving the energy efficiency of their homes and to create 168,000 jobs in construction, manufacturing and retail industries in local communities across the country. Additionally, this act will help cut the use of natural gas and home heating oil in an amount equivalent to nearly 7 million barrels of heating oil in 2011.

HOME STAR will offer two different incentive levels for homeowners – GOLD STAR and SILVER STAR. The legislation is still being drafted, but here’s how the proposed program is shaping up and how you can fit in:

The $1.7 billion GOLD STAR level is a two-year incentive program that features the highest incentive amounts offered and will be available only for whole-home improvement projects. New jobs will include work as a Building Analyst Certified Professional or a qualified rater (or an approved equivalent) that conducts an energy audit and comprehensive home performance assessment before work begins, then develops and prioritizes improvement measures specific to the needs of the particular house. Those measures are then implemented by a BPI GOLD STAR Accredited Contracting Company—or another accreditation approved by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy.

When the work is complete, the certified analyst or rater returns to the house to conduct a test-out energy audit. This test-out assessment ensures that the installed measures are working properly and determines the modeled energy savings achieved. Under the GOLD STAR level, only BPI Certified Building Analysts and RESNET raters (or an approved equivalent) can perform the test-in/test-out energy audit assessments. Additionally, only BPI GOLD STAR Accredited Contractors (or another accreditation approved by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy) can implement energy efficiency improvement measures.

It’s Easy Being Green: Career Advice from a Green CopywriterGreen marketing is a new and emerging career field — so new, in fact, that there’s not much standard information on wages, skill requirements, or growth projections yet. If you’re interested in going into this field, or another new and emerging occupation, how can you learn about it? One way is to talk to people who are already working in the field. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Anne Michelsen, green copywriter and co-owner of Marathon Renewable Energy in Wasau, Wisconsin. During our conversation, Michelsen offered some great advice for green career seekers.

Teri Fritsma: How did you get started in a green career?

Anne Michelsen: My husband and I own a music store, and I started helping out around the store – cleaning horns and vacuuming so on. Soon though, I began getting interested in the business side of things. I started to look for ways to improve our store’s marketing efforts, and wound up taking a correspondence course in copywriting. I’ve always been interested in the environment, and eventually I realized I could build a career by combining my writing skills with my passion for sustainability.

TF: What exactly is copywriting?

AM: Basically, it’s persuasive writing. In journalism, you’re writing to convey both sides of an argument; in copywriting, you’re taking a stand on one side or the other. Copywriting can include brochures, white papers, subtle sales, and so on.

TF: What are the main skills and competencies you need to be a copywriter?

AM: I’d say there are a couple of key things. First, you need to be able to write well. There are lots of good copywriting courses out there; look for one that’s taught by a master copywriter. Second, you really have to understand and enjoy people. Since copywriting involves persuasion, you have to have some knowledge of personal psychology to understand what motivates people. Finally — and this one really applies to whatever business you’re in — you need to promote yourself. Writers tend to be introverts and sometimes aren’t comfortable with self-promotion. But if you’re going into copywriting, especially as a freelancer, you really need to get comfortable with this.

TF: Do you need to take special “green” courses to prepare for a career like yours?

AM: Personally, I majored in Art and German! But I also have a coursework equivalent to a minor in Biology, and took quite a few courses in Ecology. Beyond taking specialized courses, I’d recommend that someone interested in green copywriting simply read. Read whatever you can get your hands on about sustainability, climate, water, agriculture, energy production, or any other specialty you’re interested in. There’s so much information out there, even the most informed

person can know only a tiny fraction. So read whatever you can, and listen to tapes in the car when you’re not reading! You also have to make it your business to know your industry. If you want to be an effective copywriter, you need to understand the issues that face the companies you’re writing for.

TF: In your field, is it better to generalize or specialize?

AM: I think it’s better to specialize. If you’re shopping for a kayak, you’d rather go to Kayaks Unlimited than a department store, right? The same is true in copywriting. Rather than a “green” copywriter, become the “wind” copywriting specialist, for example.

TF: What other general advice would you give to someone interested in green copywriting?

AM: I have a few thoughts.

o Hook up with mentors and experts in your field. Find people online. Hang out with people who are making it. In green copywriting, I’d recommend checking out Clayton Makepeace (a top copywriter) or Dan Kennedy (who’s a business and marketing guru). o Check out American Artists and Writers, Inc. AWAI puts out a lot of good coursework for aspiring copywriters.o Talk to people. Tell them what you do. Work free for awhile if you need to, just to get the word out and establish a reputation.o Write every day. Start a blog. Even if you have no other writing samples, a blog is a great way to demonstrate that you can write and that you have the discipline to write regularly. o Don’t wait until you know enough, because you’ll never know enough. Just get started with what you do know. o Create an online presence. This is important for anyone in business. Have a website. Get on LinkedIn and join groups that relate to your field. It’s a great way to learn about new things and make connections with people like you.

TF: What general advice can you give to someone who’s interested in breaking into a ”green” career?

A Case Study For NOT Overlooking Professional Associations

These days with so many online social and professional networking websites, how many of you have thought about joining a real live professional association? One that has a directory of professionals across the country and perhaps even around the world; one that hosts an annual conference where members come together to meet others with similar interests working in their field, to maintain and update their professional skills through workshops and panel discussions, and perhaps to look for a new job. The value of professional associations seems to be overlooked however, I would like to start to re-invigorate the importance of these entities.

This was my experience at the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) conference in Altanta, GA this past April. This was, to my surprise, the 35th annual conference put on by NAEP. Taking place over 4 days, more than 300 environmental professionals from all over the country came together to engage in trade conversation, learn about exciting new projects others in their field are working on, to meet new friends, re-connect with old ones, and of course to socialize and gaze at the beautiful marine life at a reception dinner at the Atlanta Aquarium. And while the capacity of my attendance was to help facilitate a Green Careers Seminar put on by the Environmental Career Center (publisher of the Green Careers Journal) this was also my first, and definitely not last, experience at a professional conference. Attending several workshops, walking around the expo room, and volunteering at the registration desk afforded me the opportunity to meet several environmental professionals from various backgrounds with so many different experiences to share. I can’t believe that I have never thought of joining an association like this before.

When I first started college in 1999 as an advertising and communications major, one of my professors offered to give us extra credit if we joined an association relevant to our major. Apparently extra credit wasn’t enough for me; even then I didn’t see how it would benefit me. Little did I know several of my colleagues managed to network their way into jobs simply through relationships they built with members of associations.

While at NAEP, John Esson, founder/director of the Environmental Career Center (ECC) and my boss, noticed that there seemed to be a greater number of established professionals than young and aspiring environmental professionals in attendance. Additionally, we noticed that many of the NAEP members were decision makers at their companies and agencies when it came to developing new positions and hiring for existing ones. Many of the members and NAEP staff we had conversations with were not only there for themselves but they also really enjoyed speaking to emerging professionals and career changers. They liked being able to help direct job seekers either through stories of experience or providing them the name of a colleague or friend in the industry to whom they could reach out to for even more information.

Further conversations with the NAEP staff provided John and I with additional opportunities to engage environmental professional job seekers. “What about student chapters?” John asked. Since there are only a handful of NAEP student chapters at universities nationwide, the opportunity at schools without a chapter is sky high. Imagine if you started a chapter at your school? You would be providing yourself with a fantastic addition to your resume that shows initiative and leadership. You would gain an entire network of professionals to engage at your school as well as the entire organizations’ membership. You would also be helping to bring together the aspiring professionals at your school and providing them with a real-life, tangible way to engage in the daunting task of searching for a job. Most importantly, you become part of an organization that will support you through your life’s work!

My response to John’s question, “We have to let students know about the opportunities with professional associations that are currently under-utilized. Student chapters sound like an amazing way to get involved in the early stages of their career search. I wish I had been pushed more to join in my college days.”

Needless to say, I see nothing but positives and opportunity. Professional associations have become a non-traditional way to engage in your career search and I need you to help me rebuild this resource. Ron, being the enthusiastic environmental professional and great storyteller that he is, talked about his experience now that he is working as a consultant from home before retirement. He says that because of his wealth of experience and depth of specialized skills in the industry, this has afforded him the opportunity to be invited to speak at many different seminars and workshops nationwide.

Of course, he did not just one day have a great career, but worked for it and on it over the years. He suggests that you need to get to know employers while still in school and to pursue internship opportunities to build your resume credentials. Not only join, but become active in a professional association (see article page ____) These activities will allow you to build a network of contacts that will still need to be maintained and nurtured over the years.

Karen Kirchoff wrapped up the session by talking about credentials. She started by telling us that most students lack project management and budgeting skills and that by boosting these skills you will have an edge over other candidates. In today’s world of energy and global warming, climate science is a must. She says that unless you have a PhD, you will have a mosaic of experiences. The best-balanced candidates are those who are 50% knowledge and 50% professional skills.

Most importantly, she describes her Recipe for Success by assigning one letter or phrase to each letter of the word “success.” The first “S” stands for Skills or strengths. Develop your strengths further over your weaknesses by volunteering

or through internships. Get to know someone who knows more than you. “U” stands for Understanding your market. You need to really understand the market you are trying to get in to – do informational interviews with alumni or professionals working in your area of interest. Ask them about whom they have hired that was a star. The first “C” is about Creating Your Professional Brand. Think of two or three things that really define you and that you can take with you from job to job. Brand your professional self so that people buy into your skills and abilities. The second “C” stands for Connections. You should always be creating and cultivating any connections you make relevant to your professional life. Karen says “Network or Not Work!” “E”, as you might have guessed, stands for Experience. Once you have the experience in the field, you need to define your experience. How did you do it? Why was it important? What skills did you utilize to get it done great? The second to last “S” stands for Strategic. You should be strategic in choosing and linking your training to your experience. Your resume should reflect that you utilized the skills you learned in training throughout your real world experience. The last “S” is for Sense of Place. This means the environment of your work. Understanding the type of environment you thrive in (fast-paced, moderate travel, field vs. office setting) will take you a long way to realizing your dreams.

Karen leaves us with this: You can do anything you want to do as long as you employ your passions, perseverance, and a sense of place. My advice? Don’t wait for tomorrow, make things happen today!

AM: The great thing about green is that is encompasses so many different career fields — agriculture, energy, communications – you name it. You can take just about any background or set of interests and move into green. So I’d really recommend looking at your own strengths first. Think about your own background. What fires you up? What are you passionate about? Then go out and find out how you can apply that to a green field.

TF: Any final words of advice for young career explorers and job seekers?

AM: I guess I would say that you have to deal with that little part of yourself that doesn’t want to do it. You have to master self-discipline and get over self-doubt. Having fear isn’t the problem – what can really do you in is not realizing that your fear is holding you back. If you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself: what am I afraid of? Why am I sabotaging myself? Then look at those around you who are successful and realize that if they did it, so can you. If someone else did it, then it’s not impossible.

Postdoctoral Research Associate – New York. The research area is in the charge generation and transport in films of conjugated polymers for organic photovoltaics. An individual is sought to aide in studies designed to obtain a new level of understanding of the nature charge carriers in films for organic photovoltaics (OPV). OPV’s are a promising class of materials with great potential to deliver electric power from sunlight more cheaply than can be created by burning fossil fuels, but serious barriers prevent OPV’s from reaching their potential. Increased understanding charge carriers in such devices will play a major role in removing those barriers. To accomplish this goal, studies will measure the yields, mobilities and optical absorption spectra of carriers as they evolve from isolated polymer chains in solution to polymer films used to make OPV cells. Results will provide insight into charge trapping in films that lead to reduced mobilities, and provide input into studies of geminate escape of charge pairs formed from dissociation of excitons at heterojunction interfaces. Tools utilized will be a combination of ultrafast laser and impulse radiolysis techniques at LEAF. The successful candidate will participate in development of required new experimental capabilities, including microwave conductivity, and apply them to make pioneering measurements on OPV films. Research Associate – Oregon. A one-year post-doctoral research associate position is available in the Aquatic Bioinvasion Research and Policy Institute (ABRPI), a joint program of Portland State University and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Duties include development of an aquatic plant biosecurity plan for Micronesia; surveys of aquatic plant communities in the Pacific Northwest, Panama and Chesapeake Bay; and studies of resource use efficiency in invasive, introduced and indigenous aquatic plants. Experience with the aquatic plant (submersed and emergent) flora of the tropics preferred. The ABRPI undertakes collaborative research to advance understanding of biology, ecology, management and policy focused on biological invasions in aquatic (freshwater and marine) ecosystems. Current research at ABRPI includes close collaboration between the Center for

collecting metamorphosing wood frogs at drift fences, measuring and marking those metamorphosing frogs, and then releasing them at the point of capture. Additional duties include assisting with experiments, dipnet sampling ponds, and repairing and building drift fences. Fieldwork includes early morning and late night work with amphibians. Valid driver’s license required. Some previous experience conducting ecological field research is preferred. Bat Research Technician – Kentucky. One field technician sought to assist with research focused on the roosting, social, and foraging behaviors of Rafinesque’s big-eared bat at two field sites in Kentucky (one in Mammoth Cave N.P., another in western KY). Housing will be provided throughout the course of the study. Technicians’ primary job duties will be daytime and nighttime radio-telemetry. Conduct research and assist with the execution of two long-term cropping systems experiments comparing distinct organic vegetable and grain production systems. Research Assistant – Massachusetts. The Ecosystems Center is seeking applicants for a full-time, year-round Research Assistant I/II in Soil Warming. Part Time Project Coordinator – New York. Through collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, the Wildlife Conservation Society is offering a temporary 24-hour per week position from April through October 2010 for an enthusiastic Project Coordinator to lead middle school students in herpetological surveys of the Bronx Zoo grounds. The position involves designing and leading herpetological surveys that will be repeated throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. Surveys will be conducted in a manner that is repeatable and easily understood by middle school students. Methods employed will include transect, use of cover boards, and visual encounter survey methods. The Project Coordinator will serve as a liaison with AMNH project staff as well as develop course curricula, associated materials, and perform surveys with individuals from the Bronx Zoo Education and Herpetology Departments.
