A green, or sustainable, building is a structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated or reused in
an ecological manner
“Meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”
‐‐UN Commission on Environment (Bruntland Commission, 1984)

The Basic Concept of “GREEN”
Why is the Green Building concept important to our customers?
• Impact of government requirements– Federal
– State
– City
• The public's sensitivity to the environment and indoor air quality
• Economic considerations of building green
Buildings with good overall environmental quality can reduce the rate of respiratory disease, sick building syndrome and enhance worker performance.
Adhesives Industry Contribution to Green
Requirements for LEED‐Compliant Products:
Use of materials that improve air quality: develop an IAQ plan to reduce particulates in the air during installations
Low VOC emitting products: indoor environmental quality
Recycled content: reduce impact from extraction and processing of virgin materials
Use of regional materials: reduce environmental impact from transportation

•Stainless steel
•Volume= 210L, 100 L
•Loading factor= 0.45 m²/m³
It simulates the situation in a common installation of a floor in a typical apartment
EMISSION CHAMBERS
The sample is uniformly mixed, weighed and applied on a glass non adsorbent surface; the test specimen is transferred into the chamber immediately after preparation.
Active air sampling was collected at 1, 3, 10 and 28 days after specimen
preparation on Tenax TA® tubes
Tenax tubes are then desorbed by a thermo‐desorber; volatile organic compounds are separated by gas‐chromatography, identified and quantified by MS detector

R value
Ri = Ci / LCIi
R = sum of all Ri = sum of all ratios (Ci / LCIi) ≤ 1R calculated on emissions of the considered adhesive is lower than 1
VOC (g/L) = (Ws – Ww – Wes) / (Vm – Vw – Ves)
Ws = weight of volatile compounds, in grams
Ww = weight of water, in grams
Wes = weight of exempt compounds, in grams
Vm =volume of material, in liters
Vw = volume of water, in liters
Ves = volume of exempt compounds, in liters
DISCUSSION
TWO WATER BASED ADHESIVE FORMULATIONS:SAME COMPOSITION, DIFFERENT ORGANIC FRACTION
EVALUATION IN µ‐CTE AT T=40°C AFTER 24 HOURS: HYPOTHESIS ON BEHAVIOUR IN EMISSION CHAMBERS
CHOICE OF ONE ADHESIVE TO BE TESTED AT 28 DAYS
CONCLUSIONS
ECO‐SUSTAINABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR BUILDINGPRODUCT MANUFACTURERS
PRODUCTS WITH LOW VOC EMISSIONS
BENEFITS FOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY
EVALUATION ACCORDING TO ISO 16000
(EC1PLUS ,BLAUER ENGEL AND LEED ITALY)
AND IN TERMS OF CONTENT VOC IN G/L

THE SAME APPROACH IS APPLIED TO OTHER CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS IN ORDER TO CERTIFY THEM AS “VERY LOW VOC” IN MARKETS.
CONCLUSIONS
THIS EVALUATION CAN GUARANTEE A GOOD
INDOOR AIR QUALITY, AND CONSEQUENTLY
ITS BENEFITS ON HUMAN HEALTH
IN OUR OPINION VOC EMISSIONS EVALUATED ACCORDING
TO ISO 16000 IS THE ONE THAT BETTER SIMULATE THE
SITUATION IN OUR HOUSES
THANKS!
