Dear friends,It is said that tough times make tough people and the present time is replete with

challenges for the cement industry. Though it is part of the typical business cycle we are going through, it is, nevertheless, a clarion call for preparing ourselves for the future by honing our internal capabilities and sharpening our focus onto the emerging demands of the business environment.

I would like to dwell on a few significant aspects to which we must focus our attention during these crucial times. As you know that, during the last couple of years, we have made huge investments in capacity expansions as also in forward integration projects such as grinding units and packing plants to cater to the increasing demand of the construction industry as well as to ensure timely delivery to our customers. The investments were funded using a prudent balance of internal accruals and external borrowings. While on the one side, we incur additional costs due to interest payments, there has been also considerable increase in input costs and the freight charges, amply adding up to our production costs. With the competition getting more intense due to increased supplies, margins are also on the squeeze.

At this juncture, it is very important for us to focus on two vital areas: First and foremost, we must keep the costs under control at all fronts. Controlling of costs is not mere cutting down of expenditure, but it is to ensure that every rupee is spent prudently so that it accrues as value to the organisation. Now it is not about ‘doing more’, but it is about ‘doing different’. So, if you consciously observe your day-to-day routine activities and take a hard look around your workplace, there could be plenty of potential opportunities waiting to be improved. I am sure you can come out with new ways of doing things that could contain wasteful costs and enhance effectiveness. You might remember the old adage that many a drop makes an ocean. Our collective efforts can go a long way in building a culture of fiscal discipline.

The second aspect we should focus on is to explore means of becoming even more customer-centric. We have always stood steadfast in meeting our customers’ needs, not only their explicit needs but their unspoken ones as well and we have never shied away from walking the extra mile for accomplishing that. That is why you may find our internal quality yardsticks go far beyond the prescribed standards. If we imbibe this spirit of customer-centricity in all our actions, then excellence will become part of our habit.

I see an all-round optimism and the economy is in the pink of health. I envisage a great potential for our Company in view of the imminent opportunities and our innate human capabilities. But, if we have to participate in the India growth story, it is for us to act on these vital aspects now. It is time for us to display our commitment and prove our resilience as we emerge even tougher, when the storm withers over time.

Wishing you and your family members all the very best.

Our Founder Shri P A C Ramasamy Raja continues to be a source of inspiration for us.

Here we reproduce a Poem on our Founder, written by his grand daughter Ms Vidya Jayaraman, published in “Sun of Rajapalayam”, the book published during the Birth Centenary of our Founder.

The Subtle Sakshi

Dear Friends,

Sustainable development is something we hold close to our heart at RAMCO and we go extra miles when it comes to environmental protection. We have never hesitated to invest in technology to ensure safe and clean environment in and around our factories. Our Units are known for their receiving awards in recognition of energy conservation and environmental protection. Alathiyur Unit is the first in the industry to receive 4 Leaves Award from Centre for Science and Environment in the year 2005. Our relentless efforts in the direction have now been recognized by Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board as well as AP Pollution Control Board. Our Alathiyur Unit has received the ‘Green Award 2011’ instituted by TNPCB and our Jayanthipuram Unit has been conferred with State level Award for Cleaner Production by APPCB.

As a responsible corporate citizen, we have always displayed high degree of commitment towards maintaining product quality, environmental protection and health and safety of employees. Apart from adopting the best-in-class technology to meet these commitments, we have also put in place ISO systems for ensuring quality, environment and safety practices are of global standards. Our Units at RR Nagar, Alathiyur and Jayanthipuram have already been certified for compliance to ISO standards of Integrated Management System (IMS) which comprehensively covers the standards relating to quality, environment and occupational health and safety.

Now that our Ariyalur Unit and all our Grinding Plants (Kolaghat, Salem and Chengalpet) have been certified for ISO 9001:2008 by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), we can say with pride that all our Factories and Grinding Units are now ISO 9001:2008 certified for compliance to Quality Management System. I am sure our teams at these Units will continue in their stride and get IMS certified.

I am also happy to note that our Quality Circles have been actively implementing new ideas for improvement and it is heartening to note that their presentations at the recently held QCFI Chapter Convention have bagged many Gold and Silver Awards.

Wishing you and your family members all the very best.

What is the outlook for the industry?

In the last two years, the industry is growing at different pace in different States. The only State where it is not growing is Andhra Pradesh. In the last four years there has been a decline. This, from a position where it used to grow at 15-20 per cent. At one stage the consumption peaked to almost 28-30 million tonnes a year. In the last seven years, installed capacity in Andhra Pradesh has gone up by three times.

However, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat are the only States where incremental growth can come. In the other States — Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh — only small capacity addition is possible as the existing limestone reserves are fully tied up. Andhra Pradesh still has a lot of scope for putting up new capacities in Kadappa and Kurnool districts.

Madras Cements has around 600-700 million tonnes of untapped limestone. We have bought the land, got mining leases and environmental clearance. We have bought 4,000 acres. We are watching the market conditions. Recently, we got mining lease near our Jayanthipuram plant, where we have over 100 million tonnes of limestone. Other players too have limestone in Andhra Pradesh. Another 50-60 million tonnes of capacity can come in Andhra Pradesh. But the problem is logistics.

Another advantage in Andhra Pradesh is it has also got coal, which is another important raw material. If coal blocks are opened up and allotted to cement companies, the cost of production can be the cheapest in Andhra Pradesh. The other States can only receive cement. Take the east, there is no limestone deposit. The east has to receive cement from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. They can have only grinding units. In Odisha, Orissa Cements has one plant and ACC has one small plant. That is all. No other plant can come up.

Which means your cost of transportation will be huge…

The challenge for the cement industry is going to be logistics. Cement is a high volume, low value commodity. Even at Rs 350 a bag, it is only Rs 7 a kg. The logistics cost may either equal or exceed manufacturing cost. Five to 10 years down the line, for many companies the distribution cost will be more than the manufacturing cost.

How are companies like Madras Cements tackling the huge drop in the Andhra Pradesh market?

That is why we have put up a grinding unit in West Bengal, with a capacity of one million tonne. At least a third of our capacity we can take to West Bengal. We are also exploring markets in Odisha and Maharashtra. Part of this cement is also sold in Karnataka. Even though growth in Andhra Pradesh is not up to the mark, we are able to substitute with other markets. We are selling our cement even in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for certain projects.

Where do you see Madras Cements going forward? What is your mandate?

We have enough reserves to expand. Our philosophy is for existing investment, we should have decent capacity utilization. Our concentration is capacity utilization from the existing plant, may be we will expand in West Bengal and other places by putting up grinding units to increase our capacities. The capacity utilization will be around 70-75 per cent.

What would be the challenges for Madras Cements?

First, we have to improve our capacity utilization. Second, more control over distribution cost and third brand building. Since we have to enter the new markets, challenge is how to establish our brand against established players.

Our Alathiyur was fortunate to have the divine blessings of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, the presiding Pontiff and the 36th in the line of Jagadgurus of the celebrated Sringeri Sri Sharada Peetham

Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahaswamiji has been the guiding spirit behind innumerable spiritual aspirants and our CMD and his family have been ardent devotees of Mahaswamiji.

An erudite scholar, His Holiness has composed many a divine verse in praise of His Guru, the previous Gurus and various forms of God. His Holiness is also a versatile linguist. His discourses in chaste Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi have pulled people from far and near towards treading a virtuous life.

It is, of course, a great blessing for us that the compassionate sage had visited our Colony at Alathiyur and gave pearls of wisdom to the devotees.

Our CMD launched the 5S Practices at RR Nagar on 24.04.2012 and Dr. R. Balakrishnan, 5S consultant has been hand-holding us in implementing 5S activities. 5S helps a great deal in reducing the Inventory, improving the productivity and safety and conserving the space as well as input materials.

At RR Nagar, 5S Practices activities are already in full swing in Production areas, Office area and beyond the work place area and 60% of 1S activities are completed and 2S activities have already been started in few Zones. Twenty eight officers have been trained by Dr. Balakrishnan training to conduct internal audit of 5S twice a month and expedite the improvements. RR Nagar has set out to complete the 5S Activities by the end of this calendar year.

During the 5S Audit conducted by our Consultant in August, Occupational Health Center scored the Highest Rating followed by IT Dept in second place and Auto Garage and Cement Mill Substation sharing the third place.
