Materials & Resources (1 of 2) Possible Points 14

Credit 3.3 Resource Reuse, 30% Furniture & Furnishings 1

1. This does not apply to new projects, but very much applies to the essence of renew and reuse. For details, please see “Environmental Quality Initiatives” on page-4 to learn more about how Adden products did not involve recycling, rather, were restored and revived to a second life at Cornell University and the University of Rochester.

Credit 4.1 Recycled Content, 10% (post consumer + ½ pre-consumer) 1Credit 4.2 Recycled Content, 20% (post consumer + ½ pre-consumer) 1

1. CARTONING: Half of all Adden corrugated boxes and cartoning are of 100% Post Consumer Paper

2. CARTONING: Recycled content in the other half of Adden’s corrugated packaging is in excess of 35% recycled paper for unwaxed product. This content can be as high as 81% depending on the required board combination or ECT. The exception is a 275# Mullen or 44 ECT where a 23-24% recycled content is achieved. This is due to the 80% of virgin fibers in heavy weight liners used in this particular combination. For stacking performance, another combination is utilized which contains in excess of 35% recycled fiber.

3 METAL BED SPRINGS Add t l b d i i d f l t 100% l d t i l All ll d 3. METAL BED SPRINGS: Adden metal bed springs are comprised of almost 100% recycled materials. All re-rolled angle for head and side rails comes from recycled railroad tracks. Springs and clips come from scrap steel which is made into rods that are then drawn down into wire. Coil steel is processed steel scrap that is melted down and produced by mini mills such as Nucor. Even the paint process used (powder coating), is more environmentally friendly than liquid because of the liquid chemicals used and the disposal of liquid paint. The powder system is a closed loop system so unused powder is continuously reused.

4. FLAT LINE FINISHING: 100% of run-off from rolled on flat-line finishing process is reclaimed, filtered and reused.

90% of Pennsylvania lumber used is from certified sustainably managed forests. Pennsylvania is a national leader in the implementation and promotion of sustainable forestry practices. Pennsylvania has 16.7 million acres of hardwood forest, covering 58% of the state’s land mass, compared to the 1900’s when forest coverage was reduced to 30% caused by over cutting. Today Pennsylvania has essentially the same number of forested acres as it did in 1989 and more than in 1955. Lumber is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Currently 2 4 million Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Currently, 2.4 million acres of forest in Pennsylvania are certified by FSC, with the balance falling under SFI, a voluntary industry-sponsored program promoting sustainable forest management. Timber harvesting operations are subject to regulation related to streams crossing, wetland disturbance, soil erosion, etc.

Pennsylvania has one of the nation’s largest concentrations of hardwood including Red Oak, Red Maple (Soft Maple), Cherry, and Sugar Maple (Hard Maple), with 90% of Pennsylvania lumber harvested from these sustainably managed forests.

What could be more sustainable than North American hardwoods?

Adden Furniture uses North American hardwoods in the construction of many of its Casegoods, Seating, Tables

and Chairs, utilizing responsible, environmentally friendly and sustainable material sources. North American

hardwood forests are considered the best managed in the world, employing over two million annually. Over the

past forty-five years there has been a constant increase in the supply of North American hardwoods, averaging

over 1% annually i.e. there is 45% more hardwood forest today than forty-five years ago. Currently 94% of all

North American hardwood forests are privately owned, managed and continually replenished.
